Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm interviewing here Oct 31! Anyone else coming to town for a good ol' Halloween interview? Also, if anyone has some last-minute tips I would really appreciate them. I've been reading through the forum, so I know the material that is already on here but more preparation is always a good thing right?

Yes. Don't eat the pizza. It's not deadly, but even the soup is better. Hopefully you land on quesadilla day. 😀

In seriousness...if you've read the thread, you know what you need to know and you've probably seen the important stuff to the point of redundancy. Just relax and actually enjoy yourself. Confidence and comfort are helpful.

Does DMU send pre-interview rejections or just a silent rejection?

I've been complete here for about 6 weeks and no word yet. Would love to get an interview here.

They say decisions can take 60 days. And they're pretty good about that.

Does anyone know how long it takes for them to re-review a file?

Interviewed here on 10/18. SUPER nervous to hear back. This place is basically perfect for me

Waitlisted. Super bummed. Anybody have any idea how the waitlist is constructed?

Thanks!!! It's pretty exciting stuff. I completely wasn't expecting it today, considering I interviewed 3 days shy of 2 weeks ago. DMU works fast!

It is discipline-based. I prefer the system-based approach. However, DMU has a top-notch OMM department, and it also has a mandatory surgical skills lab where you learn how to scrub in, sterile technique, and different types of suturing. These skills would be impressive when one is rotating during the clinical years. Since the DO residencies really have a preference for those who essentially do audition rotations, any chance to wow would be favorable for the student/future residency applicant. DMU also has a number of unique electives. One of them requires the student to partner up with another OMS1, and they follow a patient with chronic illnesses to examine problems inherent within the longitudinal care plans, etc.

ETA: Looks like the person who asked the question deleted his post. Oh well, I'll keep this response up. His question dealt with the DMU curriculum.

Pre-interview hold, ugh. Not sure why, but oh well. Stats: 3.55s, 3.55c, 28 (11,7,10). Has anyone come off of their hold status yet, or do they typically start inviting those on hold sometime in like March??

Just switched my interview date here to November 8th! Anyone else interviewing here on that date? Recommendations on where to stay/are most people staying at a certain place?

Thanks : )

It honestly doesn't matter. Find the best deal. Everything in Des Moines is within a 15 minute drive, and there's no traffic.

I was complete on 9/5 and I haven't heard anything back yet..should I give them a call or wait till its exactly 60 days? Thanks.

Can anyone give any pros to the curriculum at DMU over a systems based curriculum?

well saying that DMU isn't systems based isn't entirely true. The first year is set up as traditional curriculum so you have anatomy, physiology, clinical medicine, OMM, microbiology, biochemistry, etc. The second year is systems based so we have hematology, gastrointestinal, cardio, respiratory, neuro, etc. So it is kind of like having both of the styles of curriculum.

I was complete 9/4 and am also curious about the answer to this.

You guys can always call, but if it's not 60 days and there's no information yet, they'll just tell you the committee has 60 days. It took mine like 59 days.

I called them and they told me my file was still being reviewed..she said that they are a little behind and will try their best to reply within 60 days.

Sounds good, I'll try to stay patient!

Got my snail mail acceptance letter today!!! And it came with a DMU bumper sticker how nice is that

C'mon I know someone wants to cancel their November/December interview so I won't have to interview after Christmas. 😍

I received a complete email on 9/5..apparently they are behind so it might take over 60 days to get a response
