Because it is a private institution, I doubt that it has a noticeably high preference for in-state than OOS

Maybe ask this question in the school-specific thread?

Mods, mind merging this with the Mayo School Specific thread?

I live about an hour away from Rochester in the small town of Albert Lea, MN. Attending undergraduate at the moment.

365 MN applicants apply per year, 48 (13%) are interviewed, 10 (2.7%) are accepted.
3,412 OOS applicants apply per year, 301 (9%) are interviewed, 37 (1.1%) are accepted.

There is clearly an in-state preference, but it is not nearly as much as other institutions. They are a private school, after all. In self interest, they would also most likely want to accept applicants that are likely to attend and stay there after medical school and become a Mayo physician. Midwest (especially MN) students are more likely to do so.

These numbers are quite a bit off, Mayo has had over 5,000 applicants this year. Also when you are talking about such small numbers, percentages are quite unreliable. Not to say there are no trends - just dont read into them too much.

Are you sure the 10 and 37 aren't the numbers of those matriculating?

+1. 10 and 37 are the number matriculated.

Those are accurate per the most recent MSAR.

No they don't.

However, there is a midwest self-selection bias though, up through residencies and fellowships because of the location.

Definitely noticed this during my interview there. IIRC, 7/10 people were from midwest

That was last year's data and it is accurate.. There was about a 20% increase in apps this year (estimated per Twitter). So ~4000 to ~5000 would be quite appropriate.

My apologies though, I wrote accepted instead of matriculated. I believe most of the bias is self selection. Also, Mayo may slightly factor in local because they are more likely to matriculate and be acclimated to the rather poor weather.

The dean told us they have ~4200 applications so far and are expecting a record 5000 this year.

And I made sure to tell both my interviewers how I love the weather there 😀 I've lived in Canada and Chicago for a number of years, and I MUCH rather prefer the cold over the humidity and heat of the south 😛

I doubt they are, personally. I had a few friends (from Rochester) who worked at Mayo Clinic, both through the SURF program, as well as random volunteering/research. Neither got past the interviews, and both were very well-regarded in terms of application strength (the lower of the two had a 38 MCAT and 3.9x GPA). Both got accepted into other top-tier schools. I was also rejected pre-interview despite having held several jobs at Mayo.. but that was to be expected with my stats 😉

Didn't Mayo close their primary submissions for admission on October 1st? In that case they'd have their final number by now.

But based on numbers alone, Mayo does favor IS applicants both in terms of interviewing (13% to 9%) and matriculating (2.7% to 1.1%). Matriculating is to be expected, as students that get accepted are more likely to attend if they're from the area. Was surprised they give out more interviews to MN residents though, but it's only logical if more of them are likely to attend. I would wager that these students also likely fill the "Mayo Model" more, as Mayo favors two things - a certain 'personality', and a certain amount of 'diversity'. They gauge those internally.

Yup, they did close their submissions. But all the applications submitted/verified prior to that date are still trickling in.

While im sure there is some "preference" toward minnesota residents due to the fact that there is a better chance they stay in minnesota, the numbers of minnesotans accepted is soo small its really hard to argue because +/- 5 minnesotans changes the percentages soo much. But my intuition would say yes but its nothing like the university of mn.
