Hey guys,

I was wondering what your thoughts were between these schools. I'm heavily leaning towards Ohio State as they are ranked higher and have cheaper tuition after the first year. I also got the impression during my interview that Ohio State had a lot more merit-based scholarship opportunities than Drexel as the school seems to have a lot more money to throw around.

I guess what I'm really looking for is something more substantial than a US news ranking to compare the opportunities afforded by the two medical school.

Thanks

I would go with which school is cheaper for you AND where you think will be happy. I know doctors paying off their school loans 10 years after practice (because they are paying their mortgage first). Money and happiness matters.

Drexel is a great school. The rankings are mostly a bunch of BS and serve best as giving some people additional reasons to touch themselves... or to feel inferior for no good reason.

The websites of the schools should be helpful in comparing.

Really though, the most important aspects will likely be cost and geography. Drexel IS expensive. I haven't been able to get any scholarships, but I'm covered by loans. It is in Philadelphia, which may or may not be a positive thing (I've been here 10 years, so it doesn't scare me like it does some others). The campus itself is more suburban-like than many city campuses, which has its ups (generally safe and quiet) and downs (not much to do, must travel to other areas for fun). Cost of living is generally cheap in Philly and you don't have to live near campus as there is a shuttle from center to the campus.

If you have any specific questions, hit me up via PM.

I'd choose Ohio St.

- Both class sizes are huge (so this is moot)
- Both schools offer two pathways for curriculum (coursework vs PBL groupwork)
- Both schools are in not-so-nice areas 😛 (though central Philly is arguably cleaner/safer than Columbus IMO)

- Ohio St is cheaper (or so you claim)
- Ohio St has 10x the research funding (in case you're into research)
- Ohio St has 5x the faculty:student ratio

I'm actually not sure if Ohio is keeping their coursework/PBL tracks separate. They're redoing their curriculum and different people gave me different answers about it during my interview. Ohio is definitely cheaper though. After first year I can be considered in state for tuition purposes and according to the two schools' websites housing in phili is almost 3x more expansive than in Ohio.

I'm super biased, but...

I personally think Columbus is far safer than where Drexel is... The area west of high street, on the OSU side is very safe. East, not so much. There is tons of housing immediately adjacent to the medical center, so MANY people walk ~5 minute walks to school every day. However, if you don't mind to drive Grandview and Hilliard are both awesome neighborhoods with super cheap houses. I know plenty of people who bought houses M1. But, most people rent. That would make it a ~15 minute drive.

Also, I have spoken to a faculty member, and DON'T consider this gospel, but the cirriculum is going to be totally different next year. As far as I know they are getting rid of straight ISP vs. IP. I am guessing they told you all more about it at interviews, but just an FYI.

Pros: In Ohio, you can get instate tuition after one year, and it is very easy. Half the class is OOS and almost everyone gets instate after M1. That is a HUGE bonus compared to many schools.

BIG class. I don't think the class seems as high schoolish because it's so huge, but that is just me. This also means we have SO many functions going on every week. There is always something to do, very easy to make friends who have interests in diverse stuff. We are supported by the college so much it's crazy, really. Edit: You will have SOME time to do stuff as an M1... Even if you're married, you'll be able to find other married couples to hang with, or just bring a spouse out to events, no prob.

Cons: It's in Ohio. Weather here sucks. But it could be worse. I would guess Philly IS worse....

Bonus: FOOTBALL. DID YOU WATCH THE GAME TONIGHT?! COME ON. 😎
P.M. me if you have any specific questions about OSU!

I did actually catch the ending of that game. Absolutely EPIC touchdown at the end there. Thanks for the insight into OSU. You'll probably get a PM from me later on when I've done some more reserach. Thanks!
