Many schools seem to be taking life experiences, personal statement, general personality into account. All of which are arguably equally as important as academic ability when it comes to taking care of patients. The ability to work well with others and to view situations with empathy and compassion are necessary. Everyone has worked hard. I have you have the next person has. We all think we should of gotten admitted especially if our stats are close to those posted. That’s just natural. All I was doing was answering I was more than stats. Most of us are and all of us are hoping we get admitted. I wish you and everyone luck.

Yes but you don’t need to be putting the people who DID get in down by saying “I’m better than them and therefore I should have gotten in and not them”
And your “I’m stats plus everything else” is pretty conceited.
You may have better stats than some people, but numbers aren’t everything. It’s only half for Iowa State.
Yeah, you are allowed to be annoyed you didn’t get in, but you are not allowed to put people who did get in down just because you supposedly had better stats. It’s rude and will not get you anywhere in life. Suck it up buttercup. Good luck with LSU.

It was VMCAS (sorry I should have clarified!)

Here is from my Iowa portal:

Required Science Course GPA: 3.13
Last 45 Credits GPA: 3.70
Cumulative GPA: 3.36

I did ask them why it was lower than my VMCAS GPA when I was at an Open House. My primary school (UA) was considered for my cumulative and my required science, and my CC and my grad school grades did not adjust my GPA since none of those had any requirements or prerequisites [emoji4] I was told that the portal is often lower than VMCAS, so I didn't worry too much.

me too! ISU is my dream school with the USDA right there! I just wish we could take Florida's weather and put it in Iowa! I am from MN so I really shouldn't talk 🙂. Hopefully, it is an upgrade from MN! I will say I lived in CA for 6 years so I got a taste of year-round warm weather and loved it but I just love the Midwestern culture.

Thanks!. Your stats are close to mine except my GRE Quantitative is terrible and last 45 is 3.57 but science is 3.29 as calculated by Iowa. They look at so many factors though! I just hope to be pulled off the alternate before April. I know you also have a career focus on One Health! I am getting my masters at UF in One Health and looking at a P.h.D./DVM dual degree at Iowa.

I'm sure you will! The students I have talked too seem really confident that a lot of people will be pulled off.

How awesome you're also a One Health track! UFs home of (if not the?) original One Health graduate program; my program director talks about it lol. That's also why I was attracted to Iowa (USDA APHIS being down the road and the VDL so close and the National Animal Disease Center and the National Center for Animal Health ahhhhh! [emoji76]). I would be leaving my MPH program in the middle of it by going to school thus Fall, so even if it's not in One Health, I want to finish my MPH wherever I end up [emoji4][emoji173]️
 
Should be finding about MN soon, hope I get in there so it opens up another wait list spot for one of you! Good luck everyone 🙂

Yeah, I will be one course and my research project short of getting my degree, but I am looking to see if my credits transfer to the DVM/MPH program at Iowa. Iowa and the University of Florida are my two top choice schools, so I am thrilled to even be an alternate at ISU. This year is competitive based on my conversation with admissions at different schools! I didn't get through the academic evaluation at Fl due to my low undergraduate GPA even though I have a Master of Science from their vet school. I feel like many of the vet schools make it harder for non-traditional applicants to get in. So many wouldn't even look at my application due to my grades from 20 years ago. I have so many credits I can't raise my cumulative GPA. One school even told me to retake all my undergraduate science courses (they do not include any graduate courses). I am thrilled Iowa just looks at recent grades once you make the cutoff. As far as One Health, I love my program at UF! The professors are so knowledgeable. Hopefully we will be classmates! Congratulations on getting accepted!

@krupajl We have very similar GPA stats. I am also a non-traditional student and I have also found it difficult to raise the cumulative GPA. I went back to school and got another bachelors degree in order to raise my GPA. It didn't raise it as significantly as I wanted. So, I am currently working on a Masters as well, in microbiology. I wish my grades from 18-20 years ago would disappear, unfortunately they are not going to do so. I am also interested in a dual PhD/DVM program as well. Best of luck to you!

Just throwing this out there - if you don’t have any luck this year try applying to Texas A&M next year and apply for the Texas Fresh Start Program. This disregards any grades older than 7 years from your GPA. However if any of your pre-reqs are exponged then you’d have to retake them. Good luck and I hope you get an acceptance this year! But if you don’t just know there are options 🙂

One of the fourth years I’m friends with has only experienced one warning his entire four years here. I’ve only been here since August but I have not experienced anything thus far

I looked into that but you have to be a Texas resident I think. I am going to try for Iowa again! Luckily they use the most recent! Thank-You for the info!

Minnesota has tornado warning practically every day in June. You do get used to it. The sky gets this eerie green and still feeling. I have never been hit but seen funnel clouds and they have been close. I just hope the trailer park isn't hit. 🙂

I'm from Iowa originally and, yeah really it's something you get used to, but the risk is less intense than people really think it is. We just on the northern edge of tornado alley, and since most of the state is farmland (aka, corn and soybeans), it's pretty uncommon for a town or city to get hit really bad.

I think across the last 5 years or so in the central part of Iowa I've probably experienced maybe 4 tornado warnings (a watch is when there's the possibility of a tornado, like the weather could produce one, whereas a warning is like there's tornadoes reported in the area and you should go to the basement immediately).

The trailer parks have multiple tornado shelters (that are in basements) in case there is a tornado warning - I just make sure that, in the spring and summer, I have anything that I may need to grab quick in case of a tornado all ready to go (but also know that it has never been necessary either).
 
Hi everyone! Does someone know the average amount of $$ given by the school in scholarships to an OOS student?
 
Iowa makes you get specific laptops correct? Are they the ones that can turn into tablets or just regular laptops?
 
Can anyone speak to how much small ruminant (main interest in dairy goats) and poultry experience happens at ISU? I want to work with cats/dogs and “backyard farming” stock, which is popular in CA cities. 🙂

There are classes in both specialty area available 3rd year. Like most things in vet med, you’re responsible for making some of your own opportunities. There are clubs to get your fix for your first two years, when most of your classes are more general. 3rd year you get access to more specialized classes. There is a 4th year rotation specifically for small ruminants, though I got to see plenty on my food animal rotations too. 4th year has plenty of time for externships, so you should be able to get experiences outside of those offered by the school. I know a couple alumni who have gone on to practice poultry medicine, so if you’re interested in it, you can find the appropriate mentorship at the school. Feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions. I graduated last year.
 
Parents called me today saying I had an acceptance letter from ISU...yet my portal still says I'm an OOS alternate. Called the admissions office, and they state that the person I need to speak with is out ill today. Are you telling me there's only one person that can inform me of my correct status?! Ugh! 🙁

That’s stressful! I feel like I’d trust the letter! They often take a little while to update portals! If so congrats!

Just called admissions again. Turns out they sent the acceptance letter to me accidentally...was supposed to go to someone else with the same last name.

The letter I got my first name was hand-written in it? How would they confuse last name and then not see a different first name when they went to write it.. [emoji58] I'm sorry..

The students are the ones that started and continue the Thursday dressy days so those days are a little important but if you occasionally forget it's usually okay. No one wears sweatpants unless its after hours and jeans are pretty much the reality around here. You may see some students walking around in sweatpants but the masters students don't have a dress code like vet students.
