LECOM-Bradenton Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
cool! where are you flying in from? im gonna be flying from nyc. I haven't booked the ticket yet but i will probably do it soon.

hey guys, i dont know how to drive so it would definitely be better if i went land at the bradenton airport instead of tampa right?

haha, I thought you were kidding but then I realized you're from NYC so that would kinda make sense. yeah you should go to to bradenton airport.

I would take a look at the "Hotels and Directions" pdf document that Lauren attached to your interview confirmation email. There are several hotels on the list that offer a shuttle service for LECOM interviewees, and if you call the hotel, they may actually pick you up from the airport as well.

I didn't use this service for my LECOM interview, but I will for my next one. I would love exploring the area in a rental car, but shuttle service is such a relief when you're under time constraints! And I have to get back to my job so I can actually afford to go to interviews. . . =)

So I got this email from LECOM today:

You were sent a letter offering you alternate status for acceptance to LECOM Bradenton class of 2015 and asking that you confirm your acceptance to the alternate position.

We have not received a confirmation from you as of the date of this letter. Your name will be removed from LECOM Bradenton's alternate list.

First of all, I never got that letter offering me the alternate position... Scary. I called for my status and they told me I was an alternate so I accepted over the phone. But the funny part is, I called them a few days ago and withdrew my application after being waitlisted... 😀

what does this alternate status mean? does it mean that they accepted you from your waitlist or not?

My status just changed to the "a decision has been made. You will be receiving a letter in the mail in 30 days."

I'm so nervous. It's going to be the longest month ever. It's probably a rejection since it's kind of late in the cycle and my stats aren't that great. 🙁

It's not late at all. I interviewed yesterday and the head of student affairs commented that the class is barely filled because its so early on in the cycle. I would just call them and ask what the decision is. Best of luck.

yeah, agreed! although if you submitted on Sept 27th and you're already freaking out, I think you're crazy! and even August 27th I wouldn't freak out just yet! i'd wait a week or so more before I would be worried!

Ok thanks. I'm not freaking out, just thought it was weird that it isn't even under review yet.

what does this alternate status mean? does it mean that they accepted you from your waitlist or not?

At first, I thought it meant they were accepting me off the waitlist... But I think maybe it means they were asking me if I wanted to be accepted onto the waitlist... Weird wording!

It's not late in the cycle. I just interviewed yesterday and their class is only a little more than half full (they wouldn't give me an exact number).

Out of a potential class of 196 students, that means there are plenty of spots still available.

Also, Does anyone know where I can find detailed info on the 3rd/4th year rotations? ... Including number of selectives, electives, and possibly number of mandatory rotation affiliates?

How's the housing situation at Bradenton? The rent? Distance to campus?

The Lecom.edu website has some info, not that it's terribly easy to find.
3rd and 4th year rotations:
http://www.lecom.edu/college_medici...-clinical-education-curriculum/76/0/2018/7520
Rotation sites:
http://www.lecom.edu/college_medici...nts-go-for-clinical-rotations/76/0/2018/12351

I'm pretty sure that when I interviewed 2 years ago, we were given a list of the various rotation sites both here and up north by Erie... if you got one, it's probably more current than the website. How it works is, Bradenton students get first pick of the southern sites, and can take left-overs from northern ones, and vice-versa for Erie/Seton Hill students. There are some full-year positions available for 3rd year (both up north and here in Florida), but you have to have a B average to apply for those.

As you can see, it gets complicated, but people make it work.

How's the housing situation at Bradenton? The rent? Distance to campus?

There are quite a few apartment complexes around where you'll find LECOM med and pharm students. On State Road 64, there's Carlton Arms, Springs at Braden River, and Yacht Club--all ~15 minutes from school, depending on traffic (10 minutes on a good day). Further south by University and Lakewood Ranch Blvd, there's Colonial Grand. Not sure the distance there, but something like 10-15 minutes I would guess. Rent varies pretty widely depending on where you live. A single apartment would probably be $600-1000/mo. depending on where you wanted to live, Colonial Grand being the upper end of that range. If you live with roommates it's quite a bit cheaper.

Another option (and a pretty good one, I'd say) is to get together with a few people and rent a house or a condo... there are many of these places for rent in and around Lakewood Ranch, all close to the school.

Going further afield, I have classmates who live in Tampa or St. Petersburg due to their spouses' jobs and the like, which would be at least 30-45 minutes. Not something I'd recommend if you're moving down here for school, but people make it work.

If you fly into Tampa, that's at least a 45 minute drive from the school. I'm sure you could do a shuttle from there, but it would probably end up being ~$150 round-trip, IIRC. If you're able to rent a car, that would be the way to go from the Tampa airport, although I realize renting a car can be an issue for those of you who are <25 years old... Not sure what to tell you.

Flying into Sarasota-Bradenton airport (SRQ) would land you very close to school, and I would assume that one of the hotels on University Drive would be willing to pick you up at the airport. I don't know if any of those are on the list the admissions folks would give you, or if they'd be willing to shuttle you to LECOM, but they're another option.

Good luck to all of you.

Wow, that's pretty expensive, LECOM needs to update their COA for Bradenton, as they only have $8750 for rent and utilities.

If only half the class is filled, how come a decent amount of people on this forum were wait listed? (put on the alternate list lol)

Because the school didn't want to accept/reject them. (I guess you can call the school for more specifics)

Altruist, so then Erie and Bradenton have the same policy regarding rotations except that only Erie has multiple mandatory sites? I previously read one lecom-b MS post stating that lecom-b had only one mandatory site; is that still true or are there more now? (I ask b/c less mandatory sites equates to less sites that I'd have to attend unwillingly)

There are some full-year positions available for 3rd year (both up north and here in Florida), but you have to have a B average to apply for those.

Would you happen to know which sites those are?

Oh and 1 more question, Altruist: During the 4-week vacation before 4th year, are the MS3s allowed to do an extra rotation? This way, there would be 1 more extra elective.

Thanks btw!!!😀

If you get the cheapest single apartment you can, I think it would come in under that number. If you live with roommates you should end up with extra. It's med school; you're still a student and have to live like one. It could be better but there you are. You have to pay it off eventually anyway.

I haven't gone through the rotations lottery yet, so can't give you a complete answer. I also don't know how things go at Erie, so it's hard to compare. And I can't remember hearing anything about mandatory sites.

The way we're doing it is this: we're organized into 13 groups. You can choose based upon what rotation schedule you want (ie I want internal medicine first, or I want this specific month off), or based upon where you want to go (ie I want to stay in Bradenton, or go to St. Pete). There's no guarantee you'll get everything you want. I don't know what to tell you about mandatory sites... However, I know that Ob/Gyn rotations in particular have been getting hard to come by lately, with Ross or SGU pushing us out of one of the better rotation sites; so in that case you might end up getting sent somewhere you didn't want to go.

The year-long spots up north that we were offered were at York, Scranton, Harrisburg (all in Pennsylvania) and one at Johnson City, NJ. There isn't a final list for the full-year sites in Florida, but in past years, there have been spots fairly near to the school, as well as over in Orlando, among other places. You need a B average to get one of the year-longs, we've been told, because no one with a B average has ever failed boards, and if you did fail, the year-long would go to waste because they'd have to pull you off of rotations until you pass.

Hopefully one of the upperclassmen can answer your questions with more concrete details. I'll have my schedule set by the end of the semester, so I may be able to give more details by then.

Oh and 1 more question, Altruist: During the 4-week vacation before 4th year, are the MS3s allowed to do an extra rotation? This way, there would be 1 more extra elective.

You get 4 weeks off in 3rd year, and another 4 weeks in 4th year... which month you get depends on the rotation schedule you choose. There is another 4 week period in June-ish at the start of 4th year where it depends on how you've been doing. If, based on grades, shelf exams, etc, they think you need some work before you take Step 2, you come back to campus and go through a review or something like that. If you're doing well, and they're not worried about your performance, you get another elective or another couple of weeks of vacation. That's what I can remember, anyway.

If you're asking, could you skip the scheduled vacation and do another elective, I don't know if you could, and I really don't know why you'd want to. We have the opportunity for plenty of electives as it is.

Good luck.

The single cheapest apartment would be around $600 a month, add a few hundred in utilities, and you're over $8750 over a span of 10 months. Although, the high amount that they leave for food ($4500) will help cover that.

I'm assuming you're referring to the ~4wks right before 4th year starts around June or so? That was kind of new for us this year to be used as Step 2 review time. We were brought back to take a diagnostic exam and if you did "well enough" according their grade scale then they let you take the month of to study or even take an elective if you wanted to. I think most of us just enjoyed the time off and used some of it to review for and take Step 2... MUCH better to get it over with before starting rotations again rather than trying to study and take it during.

If you didn't do well enough on the exam then they had some sort of board review at the school.... from what I heard it was basically structured study time as opposed to any sort of formal review course.

I personally pay just under 600 a month in Carlton Arms (already live in bradenton), and my utilities are 50-80 depending on the time of year. And I could have gotten a cheaper apt here. 8750 is definitely workable if you stay away from the luxury apartment complexes. If you want to live within 5 minutes of the school you will be paying more simply because Lakewood Ranch is a fairly expensive area, but you should be able to easily find something 10-20 minutes away for a reasonable price.

Hey guys, quick question:

I just checked my status and is says a decision has been made an official letter will be sent. That means rejection, right? Don't they send invites via email or phone call?

bummer...

Same thing happened to me and it was a rejection. Maybe yours is just a pre interview hold... good luck, man, and I'm sorry if it ends up being a rejection. It never feels good.

I was in the first interview at LECOM-E and was accepted, and have had my deposit in for just shy of two months now. Still "under review" at LECOM-B, complete in early June.

I'd love to give Bradenton a look and see how it fits me, but I have this weird feeling that the Bradenton campus won't "poach" from the Erie acceptees.

Is it appropriate to send a letter/e-mail to Bradenton saying I'm still interested and would like to still be considered? Or am I imagining the reason for my review purgatory?

I don't think you're imagining it at all. It sounds like the bunch that had interviews at both places were allowed a little extra time to submit their deposits so they could interview in Bradenton and make a decision. It would only make sense that they wouldn't want to take someone who has already paid a deposit to the other campus.

Just got pulled in off the waitlist!!! WAHOOO!!!:laugh::laugh:

That didn't take nearly as long as I expected! I thought I was banished to admissions purgatory for the remainder of my days, lol!!!

congrats! yay for more classmates 😀

Got accepted to both Nova and Lecom-b last month. 1500 is due at the end of the month for Lecom-b. Nova gives you till mid Dec.

Texas schools don't even give out offers till min Nov (even though I interviewed in Aug). This puts me in an unfair position of having to pick a school before I know all the outcomes or attended all the interviews. I wish they would change this system. Nova has the right idea, give people till Dec to make up their minds. Most interviews and offers would have been done by then. 🙄

Why does Lecom-b make you pay within 30days? Seems like a short time.

Just moved my interview from Dec 10th to Oct 18th, anyone there that day?

Good to know im not the only one going to be in attendance 👍
Anyone know if a facebook group or anything has been set up?

To anyone snagged off the waitlist, did you submit anything extra like a letter of intent after accepting an alternate position?

I'm in a similar situation except I was accepted after I got the interview invite to the other campus. From people I've asked, they are aware of your acceptance to one campus but it doesnt seem to have hurt anyone as some have been accepted at both. Do you think I'll be missing out if I dont check out erie???

True. Bradenton knew of my Erie acceptance but I found out today that they accepted me! 😀
... Now, I have ~1week to choose between the 2.

nice man! after seeing both campuses, which one are u leaning towards??

wow congrats man! didn't know they moved that quick off the waitlist

Thanks, I know, right? I thought I'd be checking my mail everyday until July. Definitely a relief. Still haven't gotten word from UNE yet.

Just got accepted!!!!! This is awesome school and I hope everyone that wants in here gets in! Im so freaking happy! Paging Dr. Jack Daniels...

Hey guys,

I called in today (interviewed on 10/1) and I was accepted at Bradenton! I'm really excited, and I think the campus/PBL curriculum is a great fit for me.

I do, however, have an Erie interview this Friday the 8th. So I was wondering if anyone withdrew their app from one campus after an acceptance from the other campus. Does this look bad, or should I say, is it considered "blowing off" the school?

I just really have my heart set on Bradenton. Do you think LECOM will be cool with withdrawing from Erie pre-interview?

G8orlife, I believe you were in a similar situation. And I also believe we interviewed on the same day in Bradenton.

So I was wondering if anyone withdrew their app from one campus after an acceptance from the other campus. Does this look bad, or should I say, is it considered "blowing off" the school?

I wouldn't worry about it. I have not heard of them rescinding an acceptance. I think they would only do that to you if your acceptance was conditional (such as having to complete a certain class, or having to graduate college before med school starts). The admissions departments at Erie and Bradenton make separate decisions about your file, so withdrawing from one shouldn't affect your status at the other.

I would argue that taking up an interview spot at a school you know you don't want to go to is the bigger foul, but that's just my opinion.

For those who got accepted... who told you that you got accepted? Annette or Lauren. The same question for those who got rejected...

I'm freaking out here. Thanks for the input in advance.

HELLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOO Classmates.

Accepted.

Bradenton c/o of 2015. 😀

Can someone tell me, is it necessary to have a DO letter sent to LECOM before an interview can even be granted, or can you eventually send in a DO letter after interviewing, getting an acceptance, etc? How does it work?

if you're selected for an interview you need to submit the letters.

You submit your 2 science professors after you are offered an interview.
After you interview, then they will ask for your DO letter if you are accepted.

does lecom-b take a committee letter over two professor letters? and does anyone know if the admissions office would allow us to store our luggage there? thanks!

Yes, they will take a committee letter (that's what I submitted). And to the second question, not sure. I don't think it'd be a huge request so I'd call and ask.

and by the way....accepted!!! after a long wait

Yes they do, a couple people in my interview group had brought their luggage. You just put it in the corner and its fine.
Congrats nmr and fenix :highfive:
