LECOM-Bradenton Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Waitlisted? Whatever, it was one of my first interviews. It really made me start to prepare for my interviews properly and assume all of them are going to be confrontational (though none have been since). I think what blew it was a remark that explicitly questioned my devotion to D.O. when I applied to 20 MD schools. Also they got personal and asked me to explicitly explain my family situation that led to my weak performance freshman year (even though I had alreadly went over it generally, they wanted more details which is a really painful thing to discuss) or how I retook O-chem to get A's when I got a C the first time (implied cheating - i've been asked this elsewhere but with these guys it was their skeptical tone and demeanor that gave their thoughts away). In the end, this interview woke me up and helped me do much better at other interviews. I felt an overwhelming racist sentiment that has been echoed by others who have interviewed there but i'm just not gonna go there.

I won't be taking the WL position. I don't regret spending $ for this interview and flying half-way across the country, I got a chance to visit relatives in Tampa, prepare for my interviews at much better schools and made up for the $ spent on the trip by winning at the Hard Rock in tampa hours before my flight home. Finally, I don't think I can deal with a school that has just 1 building and no faculty, it feels empty and those clowns were creepy. it's just not for me.

Finally to put things into perspective, I have pretty decent stats for DO, been invited to interview at all schools applied to so far, interviewed at top 15 MD (first choice). I also interview pretty well (atleast I've been told), am very cool calm and collective but I guess I just couldn't deal with the attacks on my character

i also have pretty descent stats/credentials for DO and have been told I interview quite well too; also went to a top undergrad...so was definitely quite surprised by the WL. oh well. perhaps the school has something against or just harsher on eastern asians (jk). but seriously not so many of them at the school, i noticed. or maybe i didn't look hard enough. but was definitely not psyched that there was only one building, for both the COM and the pharmacy school, or about a couple of the rules. and the school doesn't even have its own gym. students who are seriously about working out--and don't want to use crappy apartment gyms--will have to shell out about 50bucks/month at a local gym, according to a current student there, and that can definitely add up. just my 2 cents. 😉

"Finally, I don't think I can deal with a school that has just 1 building and no faculty, it feels empty and those clowns were creepy. it's just not for me." - USCTrojan11

I didn't know multiple buildings in a medical school makes someone a good doctor. I guess that makes sense...sorry, no, not really. No faculty? Did a ghost interview you? When I interviewed, there was a professor of anatomy and a osteopathic physician. I can agree with you about the clowns but making that one of your reasons is a bit petty. What if you had to give immediate treatment to a person dressed in a clown outfit, an emergency at a circus perhaps? "Umm, sorry no...he creeps me out. Please transfer him."

Obviously no faculty is an exaggeration. In comparison to others schools its true it does feel like no faculty though. The interviewer even made the point about it. Your sig explains why you feel so strongly about it but yeah bradenton just wasn't a fit for me. My visit just started off bad and I decided I wasn't going there and have gotten into much better schools anyway. I didn't like how I couldn't see the school the day before as the security just said no. I learned later there wasn't much to see.

Clowns is just a small reason. The unwelcome sentiment was the biggest deal, which is fine and I can understand, I'm not gonna go there but it was pretty evident how they felt and clearly I'm not the only one who feels this way. That compounded with the lack of facilities and I simply felt I didn't fit. Good luck at Bradenton.

That is too bad that you weren't able to see the campus before your interview. It doesn't make sense that the security guard will not let you round around the campus without an escort. It's not like there are cadavers in rooms or some classes in session. Weird.

Before my interview, I asked a faculty member to give me a tour. He immediately scheduled my tour the next week after he got back in town. Never once I felt I was profiled because of my race. I'm a minority and I barely saw anyone of my "race" in the school.

Interviews are not fun and we all know that but I think turning up your "sensitivity" mode during the interview will not help anyone in the room. You will create that vibe that is unpleasant and awkward. OK yes you had a bad year, I had one too believe me (went to school and work full-time, no financial support whatsoever). When interviewers are asking you questions, I don't think it's an attack on your character. They are merely trying to figure out your academic potential and strengths which is their job in the first place. Unless they flat out tell you that "hey, we think you're a cheater", then all of it is assuming. Be professional and answer the question without the emotional baggage (go to a politician-mode).

You too, good luck at your "much better" schools. Good luck in your emotional journey of becoming a doctor. Just a warning, not everyone will fancy or "accept" you in this place called the real world.

This is a very serious accusation. I'm not trying to patronizing at all, but please be careful what you say in public forums such as these. They are not as anonymous as you would think and this could lead to legal trouble for both you and the school.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and interview at this school and am sorry that you didn't have a similar experience.

Best wishes,

Peaches.

Going to have to agree with Peachy. I'm suprised to hear such opposite experiences

Yeah I understand what you are saying. But I've been asked the same questions elsewhere and it was asked in a much different manner. Further, its clear I'm not the only one who feels this way. Personally, it doesn't matter, i was only upset since I didn't really have much interest in the school but gave them a fair chance. All I wanted was a fair chance. I had been told about this "sentiment" before but didn't believe it and gave them a chance.

Whatever, what's done is done. I don't hate the school and good luck to whoever goes there.

Throwing the "race" card was ridiculous in the first place. And NO, I will not edit my posts to take out the word "racist" (from your PM). Let this be the first lesson of your professional career. Choose your words wisely.

You wouldn't want me as your classmate anyway. I wouldn't tolerate some of things you might say. 🙂

I never sent you any PMs... Oh, I see what you are doing here.

Wow, you are digging yourself in a hole. That's two counts of accusation. I'm being serious. Don't accuse me of anything.

In an effort to change the subject to brighter things..

Is there a facebook group for c/o 2015 yet?

😍

i will continue your efforts to make things brighter 🙂 but unfortunately i have to say no, i don't think we have a group yet. there is a LECOM c/o 2015 group, but not one specific for bradenton (or not that I could find)

This is my last post pertaining to you. I have already reported you. You have made indescent accusations and have been harrasing me through PMs. I have never sent you any PMs and the moderators will know this.

You imply that this is toward preserving LECOM's image and I have to disagree. I refuse to comply with your demands and that is why you are upset. Although you might not see it, I am preserving LECOM's image. I haven't been blatantly rude to people that have posted with respect to LECOM. If you have given a good reason, such as PBL is not for me or location preferences, I would not have replied to your posts. However, you have accused of something very serious and you know it. Now, you are accusing me.

How can I make "racist" slurs if you haven't even identified your "race" on this forum?

You both are acting like 5 year olds, take it to PMs if you want to continue your "conversation"

So changing subjects.......

Anyone start that facebook page?

Anyway... I think USCTrojan11 does bring up a valid point in choosing medical schools. Coming from undergrad, things like the campus being small, no gym, having more rules and just generally appearing different may seem important, but remember the purpose of medical school is to become a competent, caring, professional physician. What the building looks like, what the dress code is, and what your classmates look like has very little to do with your actual education. LECOM B is #1 for the 2nd year in a row in COMLEX 1 (and probably COMLEX 2) with excellent match results. Those are things that directly influence your future professional life. It is important to keep things in perspective when choosing a medical school. I don't mean to sound condescending, but it is better to "grow up" now than to be further embarrassed later or find out you made the wrong choice for your medical education.

Is there and Non refundable fee to hold your place after being accepted? If so, how long do you have after being accepted do you have to pay the fee?

yes there is a non-refundable deposit of 1500 dollars due a month after the date on the acceptance letter (i interviewed 11/10 and got my acceptance letter today which is dated 11/16. it says i have until 12/17 to send my deposit which will be added toward tuition upon registration)

hope this helps!!

Hey Jinxgirl, where you from in Cincinnati? Did you go to school there? I'm originally from there, though on the Indiana side. 🙂

ha yeah i went/go to school in cincy, only college though (so i've only been here since 05). bearcats all the way lol. when i went for my interview one of the student tour guides was an OU alum. im thinking i might prefer florida though!

I just cancelled my interview for December 6if anyone would like to try and take my place. Good luck!

Where did you find out that LECOM-B was #1 for the COMPLEX? I'd like to look at those rankings.

Not sure where (if) it's published, but we've heard from the administration that we had a 100% pass rate again this year. I also remember seeing a graph during one lecture this year showing our average score and it was very high as well.

They told us and showed us a graph of averages, this was for my class, 2011. From what I hear 2012 did well also though I have not seen specifics.

And for the record it's COMLEX, not comPlex.

They also stressed this at the lecom-erie interview so i'm pretty sure it's accurate.

For those of you who have sent in your deposit, have you heard anything else from the school yet? I'm waiting until i get paid to send mine in, but I'm really excited to get some more info and find out more/get ready for school!!

Thanks!

Sent in my deposit early Oct, it was cashed late Oct. Haven't heard another peep from them so you aren't missing out on anything.

I just cancelled my interview for Jan 10 if anyone wants to jump on that.

The only thing that changed for me after I sent in the deposit is when I checked the LECOM student portal. (The place you logged in to fill out the secondary application). I checked under the admission status and it said something along the lines of: "We have received your matriculation agreement and will be in contact with you in the following months."

Hope this helps.

I found this posted on SDN a long time ago. It really helped me out when I was preparing for the LECOM-B interview.

[FONT='PrimaSans BT,Verdana,sans-serif']LECOM interview questions

The first question was the tell me something not on your file question.
The rest, in no particular order are:
1. Why osteopathy?
2. Medical school is stressful, how do you relieve yourself of stress.
3. Tell me about your leadership roles, describe.
4. How do you resolve conflict.
5. Tell me about your communication, are you better written or verbal.
6. Strengths (it was worded differently, but I can remember how)
7. After my strengths he said, “and what do you need to work on?”
8. I was asked something about PBL
9. Give an example of when a group approach worked better than an individual.
10. What would be some reasons to choose a D.O over an MD.
11. Have you been treated by a DO.
12. Summarize the article on xxx (it was an easy and interesting read, so don’t sweat it).
.

I will be withdrawing my acceptance to LECOM-B. Good school and great location! Best of luck to those who will be attending! Study hard!

On a side note, anyone who knocks this school as being sub-par has mistaken.

If you look at their COMLEX pass rate, they are top notch.

If you look at the undergraduate institutions from the students who have accepted admissions offers on the Facebook group, you will find the majority of new students attended well respected undergraduate institutions.

PBL is different, but different does not mean inferior! I think there are many advantages to PBL!

Plus Forida is a great place to live for a few years!

Let me know through PM if I can provide any information for current applicants, I would be happy to help.

Is anyone else interviewing this coming up Monday(12/6)? I will be at the Wingate Inn on Saturday so if anyone else is staying at the Wingate Inn. PM me so maybe we can hang out and relax a little before our interviews.

hey guys,

this is probably more of a question for current students but i know there are some that browse these threads. anyway, i am currently taking biochem but our quarter ends this week (final on tuesday!). basically i am wondering if it is worth me taking the rest of the sequence. i already have my BS in bio so I dont really need it, but I thought it would be a good class to have when applying, and may be good to have a background in for when i start med school next summer. (not sure if this affects anyone's opinion but Dr. Lieberman is my professor...and for those that don't know, this is the author of the text Lecom-b uses for biochem). I am not taking any other classes, so I wont be overloading myself before an intense first year, but I just thought I'd see what other people think (particularly current students).

Thanks so much!!

jinxgirl- I would have said no, but since you are being taught from the same book we are using and your professor is the author, my advice would be to take it. It'll definitely help you.

Sorry, there's no perfect answer, but I'll give it a shot. I came out of a similar situation, having taken a medical biochem course that used the Lieberman book. It's been somewhat useful, but that's about it. I don't think it's saved me a lot of effort, honestly, because even the topics I remember from that class, I'm expected to know in greater detail. If you still have to read it twice, how much effort are you really saving yourself by going over it now? How much from the class will you still have in your head 1-2 years later when you're tested on it?

My point isn't that you shouldn't take it. My point is that if it's a class you hate, don't torture yourself with it now. If you like it (and some people do), then go for it.

thanks altruist! i think im probably going to stick with it for now. we are on quarters so i can still decide to not take the third part in the spring. i will see how it goes. i appreciate your input though!

thanks again!
