Wow...it is hard to believe that the app cycle is starting up again. Feels like it just ended (I guess it did...)

Best of luck everyone!

Yeah, no kidding. I still feel like I just applied.
Best of luck to everyone!

What is your personal philosophy on the practice of medicine and explain how you feel that you will advance the mission and vision of Liberty University and it's College of Osteopathic Medicine? (500 words or less)
This is the second typo I find in a secondary this year.

Is that the only question?

I had to actually look for that typo haha

Haha, you mean found? Good luck with your applications! They definitely impressed me last year. I chose to attend this school from other options I had last year... I wish you all the same success and hope you choose what feels right for you!!

Anybody have any idea what they mean by personal philosophy on the practice of medicine? I'm not sure what they are looking for exactly. Do they mean, what do I think about practicing medicine in general?

That's embarrassing. Was no one around to proofread that one sentence?

May I ask what made you decide on this school? And how do you like it now? Thanks!

Applied here, just waiting on MCAT and committee letter. Should get my score in four days and my letter in a couple of weeks!

I am pretty excited to come check out the campus and talk to faculty.

Have you guys received a confirmation email that you've completed the secondary? I completed mine last week and haven't gotten any feedback. I only received the ones where they got my payment...

Any currently accepted Liberty students around? I would love to ask questions about your impression of the school thus far. I realize you haven't started classes or anything.

Thanks for the question! I really love Virginia even though I’m from the west coast… This is what originally led me to look at Liberty during the application process. When I interviewed at Liberty, I sincerely felt the staff’s passion for success and their passion to help their community. Most importantly, I felt their passion in educating the future doctors that were/will be attending their school. I believed they would push me to the level of success that I wanted to achieve. Unfortunately I didn’t feel this at others schools and I really avoided letting other opinions persuade what they thought was best for me. I’m sure I would be fine anywhere but I wanted to love the school I was going to attend and felt that LUCOM stood out. Some hate the higher/strict standards, but I find it appealing and professional.

Yes they are a new school with their pros and cons, but I love being part of something new and growing with the school. I believe any school you choose will be based heavily on your own efforts in school and how well you score on the boards. Having a good staff helps this cause and I think they are second to none, not to mention the amazing facilities they have just built. Of course there is so much more to this in choosing a school. Pick a school you love and a school you think is best for you (easier said…).

There is some hate on SDN to choose this school as a last resort. I didn't take their advice and believe I will achieve the same success and more by sticking with Liberty. Most hate I see is from people who don’t like the school being a religious institution, or somehow comparing liberty’s undergraduate students getting a degree online to the medical school, or not liking the parent institutions politics (which probably has to do with a difference in religious beliefs), all of which have nothing to do with your success as a medical student. I hope this helps a little. Sorry for the delay as I’m not the typical SDN person who reads or posts much on here.

Hey Guys,

I am by no means an authority in this school. I was accepted last cycle and decided to defer. I will be starting with the 2019 class next August. It was a real hard decision to defer but my family comes first and having a third baby in June took precedence over starting class this fall hence my deferment. I'll tell you guys about my application and hopefully I'll help some of you guys in this crazy process:

I applied in November 2013, received a secondary in December and received an invite in Jan 2014. When they send you an ii, school will give you a set of dates to choose from in order to schedule the interview.

A good friend of mine told me about LUCOM and I was literally blown away by the school! I'm from Miami and I interviewed on 2/4/14. There were so many amazing applicants that I felt a bit intimidated by them. I'm non-trad student, married with two kiddos. As soon as the presentation began, however, I forgot any prior inhibitions about my application (24MCAT/3.3 uGPA/ 3.2 gGPA) and the school itself. I don't know how they do it but man these people really go out of their way to make you feel wanted. After lunch I had an hour before my interview, so I spoke to a few staff members. One of the people I had the pleasure of speaking with was Ben Smith. We spoke about the school and the city itself. I told him about my family and Miami. Without a thought, he offered to take me around the city after the interview. For me that was the selling point. I took a whole bunch of pics to sell the school back home to my fam - it's not easy leaving the beautiful city of Miami for a small town in Virginia but I'm sold.

The interview process was exactly how everyone prior to the interview told us it would be like: 2 sessions of 30 minutes each to find out about you and the school itself. As you are interviewed, they really get a sense of who you are and how you would meet LUCOM's mission’s statement. The school has no problems telling you from the beginning about their Christian believes and how they expect all of the students to be mindful and respectful of that fact. If you respect their principles, they respect yours. I was interviewed with a few non-christians applicants and the staff never brought up any religion aspect/opinion. We did not pray nor did we talk about our own individual believes like previous post have said. I actually was the only one who prayed silently before our lunch was served.

Most of the questions before and during the interview circled around you as an individual instead of your numbers. On both interviews, if you go over the 30 minutes, the interviewer will politely ask you to finish since there are a few other candidates waiting to be interviewed. I honestly could have stay with Dr. Ianuzzo for a good 2 hours talking about his research and medical ethics. The staff this school has recruited is amazing!

I interviewed with Dr. Gish and Dr. Ianuzzo. Dr. Gish was very direct and ask about my grades , my post bacc experience, about other schools I had applied to and why LUCOM. He also asked me about life and the value I place on it. The last question was very abstract and I babbled for about a minute before I realized how simple the answer was. We talked about OMM and the half hour was up.

With Dr. Ianuzzo, I felt as though I was talking to a long lost friend who I had not seen in the last 10 years and I only had 30 minutes to catch him up. The first 15 minutes were devoted to my secondary and my aacomas essays. Then he asked a series of rapid-fire questions and before I knew it I was asked to make room for the next guest.

All in all my experience was amazing. I felt as though they were really interested in getting to know me above anything else. My interview was on 02/04/2014 and I received a phone call from the Dean at 5:50 on 02/10/2014 to let me know I was accepted.

Last year was my third year applying and I received three interviews, I was waitlisted at two schools and received one admission.

If you guys need/want anything, please feel free to PM. The 2018 students are amazing and knowing the staff at LUCOM, I can definitely tell you the class of 2019 will not disappoint.

Ps: Please try not to be cynical and look at 2013-2014 LUCOM's thread. Don't listen to a*holes and help out your fellow SDNers. After all we are in medicine to help people so why not help your future classmates.

This is extremely detailed, thank you. Do they have 3rd and 4th year rotations set up yet?

Hey Super Doc and GypsyHummus,

All I can say is that out of the 162 students, about 85 or so will get to do their rotations in Lynchburg. The other half of the class will have to rotate around near by cities. This goes with most DO schools. For example at ACOM, they have 40 students out of the entire class doing rotations in near by Dothan. The rest will have to rotate around the state and some will cross to Florida's Panhandle.

As far as Super Doc response goes, it is such a good question, I'll try to write a lengthier answer. All I can say is that peace of mind goes very, very, very far in life. With your stats I would apply at your MD state school only because rotations. You see in most MD schools rotations are done usually next door or across the street (The huge hospital that it is annexed to the med school). The advantage of this is of course the people you get to meet in order to show preference for your residency. With your stats I would have stayed at my undergrad school (UF). As far as your faith goes in my opinion it is something personal that grows with you. Some people need to be fed and some others grow their faith on their own. I am the latter and I don't go to church albeit I try to follow a very Christian life. I guess my answer boils down to two parts: God knows where you will end up for residency and he'll show you where you need to be at that point. Remember he won't take you this far to let you go. Second, if you don't agree with my first answer and you feel as though you are responsible for your own destiny, then your choices will dictate your happiness. No regrets go with your gut feeling. If you feel like the big MD or a more prestigious DO school will give you a better residency spot then by all means go there. I'm thirty-five years old and I know by experience that your own efforts won't be enough when you are competing against someone's pal or buddy. Naivety was lost a long time ago - this is why I'm not heart broken now that LeBron is leaving Miami...lol.

At the end of the day I believe your own efforts, step 1 score and how committed you are to your rotations will dictate your residency spot. My two cents!

Thank you for your advice. I will have to see how the cycle goes, who knows I may not even get a choice anyway.

I will really consider your advice as I move through the cycle. Thanks!

I'm sure they're fishing for both answers as an aspiring physician and a Christian. This is a *very* Christian, evangelical school (Young Earth Creationist, supposedly have a display with dinosaur fossils labelled as being only a few thousand years old, though I can't personally confirm that), and it certainly appeals to some, but you should be aware of that going in so you can decide if they're right for you and if you're right for them.

Funny enough, only about 9% of the inaugural class is from Liberty. There are so many people in there all with different backgrounds and beliefs. I really think it's time to separate the negative stigma of the undergrad from the medical school. I know it will be tough for SDNers

Yep, SDN just has to get over themselves. Liberty will be a fine school. Plus, if it sends more competent physicians into the workforce, high five.

For anyone that paid for the secondary fee. Did your payment amount say $0? Did you have to type in $50? I only ask because my payment amount says $0 and I have received the AACOMAS fee wavier. I was thinking AACOMAS fee wavier was the reason.

I think mine said zero too. It was weird, I had to type in $50.

Anyone know the average GPA/MCAT score for students accepted or matriculated last year? Couldn't find it on their website.

I think sdn has a responsibility to warm people about liberty who might not know better otherwise(that doesn't mean liberty can't graduate a good doctor). All I am saying is you should only really consider liberty if you share similar beliefs.

I think I have a responsibility to warn sdn about comments as this that red flag a school that hasn't even having started a first class. I am by no means attacking you doc synth. The people on this site....just...frustrate me relentlessly. I have not commented in months and only comment on the official LUCOM boards, ignoring the rest of the foolishness. I'll say this to everyone applying...do your own research...email, navigate their website, research their omnee opti alliance with VCOM and CUSOM, rotation sites, etc. In fact, check CUSOM's mission statement and undergrad syllabus on evolution/design theory (on google)...it is very similar to liberty. By all means, for those on the borderline in particular, do not leave this school off your list, because they may give you a chance to fulfill your dreams in a competitive world. And, of course, PM me throughout the year, I will be starting here next week. We just received our class schedule today and it looks intense! Very excited.

Good Morning guys,

Here is a screen shot of the second week of school. The only difference between this school and other DO schools, is the hour set aside for those students that would like attend mass. This is not mandated by the school (you are not mandated by the school!!!!) nor are you obligated to attend mass because someone else is going. This hour is set for students who wish to attend (emphasis on the "wish"). The way I look at it, it is one more hour to study / have a small break or if you wish, to relax and pray.

Please stop your non sensical notions that the school has an agenda towards teaching students about religion. This is a medical school. Yes, they do follow a code of conduct - just like every higher learning institution- and the school does a pretty good job to tell you right away the parent school is a very religious school. The relationship pretty much ends there. There are no hidden agendas nor are there any students handing out pamphlets trying to convert you; I don't think anyone has time for that either.

Like my previous posts have said, I'm here to help anyone who needs help with the school.

ps: I did a quick post from work so if my grammar is not correct, I strongly apologize.

That is weird. Aacomas released my application to the school in the evening and the next morning I had a secondary invite in my inbox.

Yeah not sure what's going on. Just keep the fingers crossed I guess?

Does LUCOM hold secondaries for MCAT scores? Just realized my scores came in the day after my app was initially released, but they should go out tomorrow with official scores on them.

I applied here when the application cycle first opened. I am still waiting for a secondary. When I called the school they said they are still going through application and to wait.

im so confused. the school verified that they had my primary in june; still no secondary. SDN people are getting ii already etc. but when I spoke to the school they said they havent sent out any secondaries yet. I interviewed here and was waitlisted last cycle.
