Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What kind of Q's are asked in the 20 minute interview?

When they were even asking questions, it was the run of the mill traditional interview questions. I mean, I was asking some of the questions too. You can sort of dictate what direction the "questions" go...a good interviewee will turn this into a conversation with the interviewers. You can give them as much or as little info as you wish…it is closed file...they have your name and undergrad institution. I believe that is it. Of course you should be honest etc.

The people behind this school are seriously rad. Everyone (except that one guy I heard about from others :naughty: [I'm joking relax] ) was really easy to talk to. They mainly just want to get to know you, what makes you tick, what brought you to pursue medicine/medical school, etc etc. I wasn't asked the classic "why DO". This portion of my interview had an MD and DO in there with me. Not sure if others were asked that tho…I sort of incorporated it into my story anyhow. For me this station was a 20 minute break from the rest of the MMI. Don't really have to use much brain power when talking about yourself. Just be yourself and have a nice chat with whoever is in there. Easy.

We didn't.

However, I assume they could always throw in those "teamwork" stations if they wanted to... where you have to accomplish a task with another interviewee and the interviewer just observes. I tried to prepare myself for the possibility of having those types of stations last year. The ones I am really glad the didn't have is the ones where you interact with an actor…those types of MMI stations are such crap. It is bad enough answering scenario prompts about how you think you would react to a situation…but to have to try and play it out 🙄 People with good acting skills would obviously have the advantage in a station like that..👎

When I interviewed last cycle, there were 7 stations and a rest station totaling 1.5 hours:

--6 stations--10 minutes long (2 minutes to read the prompt and 8 minutes to discuss it with the interviewer).

--rest station--10 minutes long where you just sit out and wait, drink water, etc.

--"traditional interview station"--20 minutes long where you have a traditional closed file style interview with two interviewers present.

MU-COM will explain everything to you in emails before you get there and again in depth when you are there right before the actual interview begins
.

Interesting.
Thanks.
Was just wondering since I didn't get a email with these information. Maybe the email that MUCOM posted that will be sent this week will have it 😳

Again, thank both of you (Kenobi and Meow) for helping us! (during school time as well!)

The email we got (yes I just checked) didn't give us a ton of info on the MMI itself - just the 6 10-minute stations and the 1 20-minute one (this was in the interview conformation email). No real details other than that. You get a good half hour or so before the interview when u get there that discusses it more in depth via a lecture presentation so don't freak out if you don't have a ton of info yet 🙂

^ Aye, that's the same one I got, more or less just a confirmation.

Sweet. Interesting.
Cheers.
Definitely looking forward to it!

I think so. At least that's what it sounded like from the e-mail.

Put on post-secondary hold :/
Good luck to those with ii's!

To those who got interviews, were you able to see how many other slots there were for given days/weeks? Curious to know how many people they interview a week / a month.

They have 4 separate groups on 2 Fridays and Saturdays that I could see in October. I forget if it said how many people per group as I am on my phone currently.

MU COM mentioned earlier about the approx % of people accepted after they interview. with increased applications i wonder if that % will go down? as they interview more people, or stay about the same if they are interviewing the same amount of people this year

Does anyone know what hotels are near the school? I am trying to book for Sept. 13-14 before the $ goes up...

There are plenty of hotels considering the school is a few miles from downtown Indy so it shouldn't be hard to find one you like. Everything from typical days inn kind of places to the Marriott which isn't far. I'm from the south side of Indy so if you have any questions regarding Indy itself feel free to ask. I'll probably know better than most students.

Yea there's this amazing thing called mapquest lol .... 5 seconds after I posted that

Does Marian have a dress code?

For daily lectures, there isn't a dress code. For labs and clinic it goes something like: "work out" clothes for OMM, scrubs and labcoat for anatomy, professional attire/whitecoat for clinical experiences.

Id say the earlier in the game the higher the chances are so I wouldn't start freaking out just yet

I agree. You should consider the fact that March on, many of the interviews are probably for waitlist, which probably factors into that %

MU-COM does not interview for the alternate list. As long as we are interviewing, there are actual spots in our class.

Any idea how I can check if mucom has gotten my updated aacomas application?

Does anyone know this school's policy on additional letters of recommendation?

i stayed here last year for my interview and it was really awesome. theres a cracker barrel right next door (which was awesome cuz we dont have them in washington) and a few stores accross the street. the rooms are really nice for 59 bucks, and the shuttle basically picks you up and drops you off wherever on the campus and at the airport, and whenever you want. i highly recommend it, but i got lost taking the bus there because i think the address is wrong (google maps sent me to a medical research facility about a few blocks away 😳). hope that saves some of you the trouble i had haha

Anyone think that it might be bad to interview during the thanksgiving long weekend? :x
Just noticed it ...

Invite today! Thanks MU COM! Oct 12 is the earliest Sat I saw.
