Probably bad to do it the weekend before because you'll have to wait longer (the committee normally meets on Thursday mornings).

Without sounding offensive, would the active M1's please outline some of the reasons they chose MU over other DO schools such as PCOM, Nova and the other older more established schools?

I'm trying to gather as much info as possible in the 6 weeks before my interview 🙂

I don't think this is an offensive question at all. Being a new school, it's definitely a legitimate one to ask. Probably a good one to ask current students when you go to your interview day, also.

For me, I interviewed at 5 schools (all over the spectrum in terms of how long they've been around), and turned down my interview at KCOM (the most established school, obviously) because I'd rather go to MUCOM. I'm sure everyone has different reasons but I'll give you my personal reasons for wanting to come here.

1. Curriculum. Schools I interviewed at had a variety of curriculums (2 had traditional science-based, 2 had systems and 1 had PBL). MUCOM goes by a systems-based curriculum. You obviously have to go by what's best for YOU, and I thought systems was the best way to approach medical education. A lot of people flip over backwards because PBL is supposed to be awesome, but after witnessing it on another interview day, I hated it. It's just not me at all. I like being lectured to, and I can't just learn by talking in a small group of peers. That being said, we do have a little bit of PBL integrated into the curriculum through the ICM course so if that's something that you want some exposure to, it's a nice way to discuss cases (not to learn everything, in my opinion anyways).

2. Location. Location was a huge factor for me because of the opportunities the school had. I'm originally from the Midwest so I wanted to stay here because I'd like to rotate here, have a residency here, and practice here. Obviously you can do rotations and residencies wherever, but I liked the idea of having all of my rotations in places I could potentially see myself in the future. I wasn't going to go to a school on the other side of the country, and have to do half of my rotations over there when I had absolutely no interest in being there (this was a major thing that turned me off from AZCOM, personally). This was a big factor for me, since a few of the schools I interviewed at were a plane-ride away. Also, people always talk about a "support system" in med school. Whether or not that's something you take into consideration, it's sort of important. I moved here alone and live alone. It's comforting to know that if I really want to go home for the weekend, I can drive the 4 hours to spend time with my family.

3. Opportunities in Indiana. This is something that I think MU-COM takes pride in, as they should. Since we are the second school in the state, we have a TON of state support. We are partnered with the major hospitals in the state, which will be nice come rotation time. Hospitals were actually asking to have us rotate through them. By the time our class graduates, they are planning on opening more residencies here. That being said, they're being opened up at places we will be rotating at and it only increases your opportunities(big plus if you actually want to stay in Indiana). The CEO of one of the hospitals in the city has actually lectured to us multiple times already. So that's pretty cool that they're already taking that much interest in us early in our medical education.

4. Facilities. I mean, it's pretty cool to be in a high tech building versus a building that hasn't been updated in a while. I've seen older buildings with older anatomy & OMM labs, and while that isn't the most important deciding factor in the world, it still kinda stinks of your facilities suck. I think I went over in another post all of the cool things about our building, so I won't go into a long drawn out explanation of that again.

If you followed me at all or seen anywhere else I post, MU-COM was my second choice out of all of the places I interviewed - CCOM was my first choice. I know you mentioned PCOM and NSU, but obviously CCOM is an established school too since it's the 2nd oldest DO school. In hindsight, I'm actually thrilled I didn't get in there for multiple reasons. First, I had zero idea of what loans meant in terms of how much you had to pay back. CCOM I want to say is something like 55,000/year (versus MU-COM that's 42,000 - the average for private medical schools). An extra 13,000 in tuition x 4 years is an extra 52,000 BEFORE interest. With interest it is paying almost 150,000+ dollars MORE. Is that worth it? Not so much. Second, I think it's interesting to think about the quality of rotations you are going on and what you have to compete with. For CCOM, they have pretty killer rotations but there are a MILLION medical schools in Illinois. Competing with all of those students for spots in Chicago is insane, compared to the open doors that I will be experiencing here. Third (while this isn't the biggest deal in the world to some people), CCOM does not record lectures and I don't believe they have any intention of doing so. Having your lectures recorded is the BEST THING EVER IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD. No joke. Even if you plan on going to all of your classes, you have no idea what you miss when you're actually in it. I re-listen to all of the lectures I think are a little harder in terms of material and it makes me understand so much more. If you can choose a school that gives you this opportunity, it seriously is awesome. Idk what schools do it, but I know some do.

Alright I realized I sort of babbled on (yet again) - can you tell I'm distracting myself from studying? hahaha. I'm sure there are other reasons, that's just all I can think of right now. Honestly, I'm sure it's more comforting to go to more established schools, but it's important to note that they are pretty set in their ways. Here, the students have a voice in how things work (to an extent) and the whole staff and administration are pretty open to what we have to say. It's pretty cool to be involved in something like that versus someone telling you "this is the way it's always been." I'm really not worried too much about the fact that we are the first class. Wherever YOU decide to go, you will make the best of it. It is up to you to study the material. You just need to find the place that fits you best, new school or old school. This place fits my study habits and personality pretty well. Hope you love it here when you come interview! 😀

If you go back earlier in this thread, quite a few of us listed many reasons we chose MUCOM. A lot of us were accepted at other schools and chose MUCOM because of its innovative curriculum, state of the art facilities, and huge network of hospital affiliations. Just because its new, does not mean this is a backup school. If you check the MUCOM thread from last year you'll find a lot more details about the school too. 🙂
To sum it up: MUCOM rocks 😉

People turned down all sorts of schools for all sorts of reasons. Don't get caught up with with this stuff…you have more important things to consider at this point in your pursuit of medical school matriculation.

Which medical school you attend (especially if you have the luxury of having a choice between schools) is a highly personalized decision and there are a multitude of factors that go into it.

I know that this post is more of a WAMC type of inquiry but will i get auto-screened out with my stats? I currently am at a cGPA 2.88, sGPA 3.36 with a 27 MCAT and I am re-taking 4 courses at my local CC that will end at the beginning of November. I should be able to pull A's since they are cakewalk classes that I just didn't care to show up for as a freshman (2004) and would boost my cGPA to 3.01 and sGPA to 3.49ish.

If I would get screened out by submitting my AACOMAs (cGPA 2.88, sGPA 3.36) now, I will wait until my updated GPA will reflect the higher stats in November. But, I know that is applying pretty late. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
 
Do you think it's too late to be being complete around now? I was just finally able to get my last letter of rec and sent it via interfolio after having my secondary incomplete sice July 1. I want to go to this school, but I'm worried that its too late now.

Indian resident and live in West Lafayette, IN about 70 miles from the school. I am going to visit MU on September 6th and very excited about it. Anything I should be really paying attention to, I mean beside the usual stuff. Anything I should really asking for? Taking MCATs on September 12th, 2013 and will be applying for this school. All inputs a appreciated.

I would make sure you ask about things that are important to you in your decision-making. I think it can be different for everyone, like if you are a non-trad (like me 🙂), or if there is a particular part of a medical school education, like medical missions/ outreach trips, that you're interested in. Just ask everything you want to know!
 
Keep your hopes up. I looked through last year's thread and found a few people that got interview invites after being on hold.

I was invited 12 days ago and booked the 26th of October. I assure you not many students will be interviewing before us.
