Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II today. I chose October 26th. I'm stoked. This place has some good things going for it.

II! Scheduled for 10-12.

Thanks so much, MUCOM, for offering interviews on Saturdays as well--I don't have to miss work that way, and I'm sure students are happy because they don't have to miss classes. 🙂

Anyone know when is the interview until?
Looking to see if it's possible to fly back on the same day

Please refer to the confirmation email for the following info: The Interview Day will last approximately 5 hours, which includes your interview, information sessions, and tour.

To be safe, add about another 1.5 to 2 hours for ride to the airport and TSA security check, etc.

The next round will be files complete on or before 8/9; decisions will be sent by 8/30. From there, you can estimate future decision dates by adding one week each Friday. This is the best estimate unless the volume picks up even more.

Thanks for the update!

Where is everyone staying?
Kayak shows no hotels nearby at all :/

Does anyone know how long after the interview we hear a decision?

Just got II!!! Woohoo!!!
I think med schools know when I get paid cuz I just deposited my paycheck and received the invite. Now I am looking for flights to spend that money.. Hopefully it is worth it 😀

ii, but i withdrew my application. GL to those who want this school!

ii for 9/14, any else scheduled for 10am blue group?

Does anyone know how long after the interview we hear a decision?

I hear it's relatively fast. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a decision much sooner than two weeks from the interview.

for those who received an ii, are you uploading a photo of you?

Yes! They use it for the interview to recognize each person.

Does anyone know how long the interview and the school tour would take? I want to go there and come back to GA the same day.

Good Luck to those who are still waiting.

I was complete 8/15 and received an on-hold email today. I'm kind of hoping this was an error, do you think it was? =/ Also, what is the likelihood of getting an interview invite after being placed on hold, and are we allowed to send the ADCOM significant updates that we believe will help our file?

Thanks for the SDN presence and prompt responses... goes to show how great a school this is.

Committee meetings are on Thursday mornings. At the latest, you will hear 3 business days after the committee meeting.

Some screeners work ahead of the schedule. The decision you received is accurate. All updates must go to AACOMAS.

Thank you for letting me know. I will upload the photo as soon as I get home from work.

You're welcome. The "requirement" fact is explained in the "PS" of your confirmation email. Please read everything we send for clear, concise information and instructions.

How about update LOR for additional clinical experience?

Congrats to those getting interview invites.

Remember though that your performance in the interview is extremely important for gaining admission here at MU-COM [only 44% admission rate post interview this last cycle]. Bring your A games!

Definitely!
Registered for the 26th of October, 10am. Do we still have to be on campus at 730am?

TIA

Thanks for the advice! Any thoughts on the interview itself? Was it MMI last year too?

Yep, it was MMI last year too. The interview itself is long compared to most other schools that have a bunch of activities and lunch etc and then the actual interview is only like 30 minute. Because of the MMI format, this interview lasts like 1.5 hours or something. On that note however, it wasn't a bad experience at all. Actually kind of fun…if you can call it that. I'm sure Meows will come on here and write another long post with all the fun details about the interview itself…so I'll leave that for her since I know how much she needs SDN to help with her procrastination from studying. :naughty:

I personally prefer a straight traditional interview, but I would probably be a minority in this if you were to poll my class now that we have all gone through at least one at MU. A good thing about MU-COM's MMI is that they incorporate a double long (20 minutes) station that is basically a closed file traditional interview with two interviewers. Some schools MMIs don't include this. Having this however, allows you that chance to sell yourself a bit and to carry an actual conversation rather than knowing your fate was solely based off responses you gave every several minutes to different interviewers related to vague open ended questions or "describe what would you do in this situation and why" types of hypothetical scenarios.

I dunno, I guess I just feel comfortable and enjoy talking about me 😀 Anyhow, the prep for this interview will need to incorporate all the stuff you would want to prepare for for a regular interview, but also try to familiarize yourself with preparing a response to a short prompt and delivering a coherent, organized response…oh and also being able to defend your thoughts if questioned. There is some info on MMIs with sample prompts around the internet. You don't need to go overboard with them, but just give yourself an idea of what to expect. MU-COM actual did a great job of breaking down the process and even tells you what they are looking for immediately before you go in to start the interviews.

Good Luck!

RUDE. :nono: :slap:

But I guess you're right....because HERE I AM, not wanting to study anymore lol. But on a more serious note, the MMI is pretty awesome. I personally have been to a one-on-one interview, a couple panel interviews, a group interview, and (obviously) the MMI. The MMI is by far not only the best, but in my opinion the easiest one.

Beforehand I was freaking out a little bit because I had never experienced anything like it. What did I do to prepare? A day or two before I literally you-tubed "MMI" and a bunch of different things came up. It gave me an idea of what it would be like, and also how to structure my answers to the questions. It's good to know going in how to structure answers because you really DON'T have that much time to talk. Recommendations I gave to people last year also - these people don't know anything about you going in (I'm pretty sure just your name and your undergrad institution - I don't even think they knew I went to grad school). In almost every one of my stations, I somehow brought in a little bit of small talk or a little something about myself so the interview actually knew something about me other than where I went to school and how I would handle a situation. Also, if there's a part of the situation that relates to a personal experience, bring that in too. That was my favorite thing to do and I think it really helped to personalize conversation.

The point is, it really isn't a stressful situation. And from what we have been told, looks like current students will be involved in the interview day (e.g. tours, student interviewers, etc.). This should probably make the day a whole lot less stressful (whenever I had student interviewers at other schools I felt so much better!). I'm excited for interviews to get started here! Congrats to everyone who already got one 🙂 👍

I hear it's relatively fast. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a decision much sooner than two weeks from the interview.

I heard less than a week later. My interview was on a Friday and received the call the following Thursday. That time frame seemed to be fairly common for the entire cycle (except for holidays and whatnot).

Congrats on all the interview invites! Hope to meet some of you when you come to check out MUCOM! 🙂

Any one get an ii who was complete after the 4th?

Quick question

During the MMI, do we work with other interviewees?

Quick question

During the MMI, do we work with other interviewees?

We didn't.

However, I assume they could always throw in those "teamwork" stations if they wanted to... where you have to accomplish a task with another interviewee and the interviewer just observes. I tried to prepare myself for the possibility of having those types of stations last year. The ones I am really glad the didn't have is the ones where you interact with an actor…those types of MMI stations are such crap. It is bad enough answering scenario prompts about how you think you would react to a situation…but to have to try and play it out 🙄 People with good acting skills would obviously have the advantage in a station like that..👎

When I interviewed last cycle, there were 7 stations and a rest station totaling 1.5 hours:

--6 stations--10 minutes long (2 minutes to read the prompt and 8 minutes to discuss it with the interviewer).

--rest station--10 minutes long where you just sit out and wait, drink water, etc.

--"traditional interview station"--20 minutes long where you have a traditional closed file style interview with two interviewers present.

MU-COM will explain everything to you in emails before you get there and again in depth when you are there right before the actual interview begins.

Thank you Meows, Buddy, and Kenobi for all the helpful interview info!!

The break station + 20 minute "traditional" interview were alluded to in the email in a way that was confusing to me; thanks for the clarification! 🙂

Hope your classes are going well so far.

If you don't have an Undergraduate Pre-Medical/Health Advisor can you use another science professor or physician letter to satisfy the requirements?
