Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

Last year I was interviewed then rejected based on grades.
Do your best with the interview but everything still matters.

Admittedly that's gotta be a sucky feeling. If that happened to me then is be extra pissed because I would have literally taken money shi/t bigger than the airplane rides to the following two schools would cost.
If you don't like a candidate grade wise or ec wise then why invite them to blow so much cash?

+1

this is my deal at this point. I KNOW my MCAT isn't the best. However, I expect that if I'm invited to interview, my MCAT and GPA should be past their "threshold", and now they want to see if I'd be a good fit. I understand a rejection post-interview if it's about my interview. I'd be pretty ticked if I found out it was because of something they knew before....each interview is costing me somewhere around $1,000, money I'd rather not waste unless my interview holds more weight at that point than stats.

I was pretty peeved. But they are a new school and probably didn't anticipate the influx of super highly competitive people and I interviewed rather late in the game

They said I interviewed well, but prolly not well enough to make up for my crap GPA.

Oh well, my dad paid for it anyways lol.

Fair enough but like I said, it cost me more to fly to Indianapolis than it did for me to go to two locations that are almost 3x as far away and both of which almost give me a 70% acceptance rate. I mean let's be real. Paying that much for an acceptance when already they know they aren't going to be happy with my grades is absurd and crude. I mean obviously I didn't get rejected, but if that had happened to me I'd be massively peeved too.

Would you consider an early November interview an "early" interview?

Wasn't able to book an interview until 12/14 =(. I'm kind of disappointed its so late but I gotta work with what I got.

Yeah I logged on immediately and all of October was gone. Luckily 11/9 was left. If you perform well then hopefully 12/14 will not matter.

That's crazy. I was invited weeks ago, and that's the date I got. You're not too far out from the last round!

ii today!!!
Scheduled for 11/8 Gold
I was also placed on hold on 8/29
Very excited to interview here again!
Anyone else interviewing on 11/8?

I see a few people getting upset about being rejected/wait-listed post interview because of grades and/or MCAT. Yes I know that can be frustrating, but you have to remember MUCOM was a new school last year. I don't think they expected the volume of highly qualified applicants that they received.
I was in the same situation last year. I had a great interview at MU-COM and was wait-listed due to my MCAT score. Yes it was very disappointing, but Marian's staff was more than informative and detailed about why I was wait-listed. I feel they are very approachable and update you every step of the way!
MMI was surprisingly fun and if you are better at face to face interviews you still have an opportunity for that!

Congrats to those accepted!

Congrats bro! I'm interviewing with you on 11/8 Blue. Having interviewed at MU-COM last year, do you have any advice on how we should prepare?

I don't think this is fair to say about MUCOM. All medical schools are like this. Just because you're invited to interview and you're not awkward in person does not mean a guaranteed acceptance. Nobody forces you to attend an interview. You should realize going into it that they can still reject you for any reason. We've all been there and it sucks but if you want to get accepted you need to be willing to take that risk.

Is there a 2018 facebook group yet? 🙂

Not that I know of. Feel free to start one!! The Facebook group for our class was really helpful before starting school.

This is applicable to many schools. I was just responding to touch's situation last year tbh.

I was placed on hold by this school and then rejected. I asked them for feed back, they said my gpa is too low🙁. I have 3.3 ish, Good luck to rest of you.

Sorry to hear that, PSimon. I hope your other apps give you some better news 🙂 Don't give up!

3.3ish? What was your cgpa and sgpa?

Hey Back 5, both are 3.39 ...
Damn. Makes me wonder what my chances are with a 3.32cgpa and a 3.54sgpa. Reading a few stores of post-interview rejections based on low gpa 🙁

Were you interviewed there before being put on hold?

My GPA's are one percent less than yours, but my mcat is a point higher. I have an interview scheduled at the end of this month. Your rejection is concerning me.

Don't worry about it, my app is not that great either. You will be fine!
GL:luck:

Hey guys do you know if acceptances/rejections are given through email? Do you think they will consider giving an online notification if there are special circumstances? I know some schools make you wait until you receive a letter.

You get an acceptance phone call. Everything else should be via email. Marian is not one of the annoying ones that makes you wait for a letter and won't tell you your fate!

How quick are the decisions?

Anybody get an updated accepted student portal yet?

Is there a current student here who can shed some light on the letter of intent? I know it needs to be submitted electronically, but is that through the portal or via e-mail?

Thanks for your assistance.

I'd email it to Bryan Moody. Any other questions feel free to PM me 🙂

Usually about a week (as long as it's not near a holiday). I interviewed on a Friday and calls were made the following Thursday. If they have a lot of candidates to get through it may take two weeks, tops.

+1 That was the turnaround time for my acceptance to MU-COM this cycle. 🙂

My wife and I are going to this interview. She is going to drive around and visit a few places while I am going through it. I heard that Carmel, Indiana is a nice place to live. Any seconds on that?

Carmel also has the most roundabouts in the country. Random fact I learned.

Carmel is on the expensive side of town. So yeah, it's nice. You can tell they have money there.

If you're looking for suburbia type places i would definitely check out Carmel and Zionsville.

As others have mentioned, Carmel is quite pricey. Some people in our class live near Eagle Creek, Zionsville, Brownsburg, Lawrence, and Fishers are all nice, too. And not too bad of a drive.

I live at the end of 38th street in a neighborhood called sunningdale commons - it's about 15 minutes from school - no expressway. There are lots of houses for sale and it's a very nice neighborhood (nicely buffered from 38th).

Canceled my October 26th interview if someone wants to move theirs up. Bryan is out of town tho, so it probably won't be available until Monday. Best of luck!

Just wondering, how fast is the turn-around in receiving secondaries from MU-COM after getting a response of the primary application being received?

Cancelling my Oct 11th interview if anyone wants to move theirs up!
this was such a hard decision to make

Did u get accepted elsewhere?

Just sent in my secondary for this school. This is definitely one of the schools I'm interested in if my top choices don't come through.

Anyone interviewing on the 12th?

just practicing and notice that I cannot hit the 10 minutes mark, always finish around 7 minutes...
any tips?

Don't worry about being at exactly 10 minutes. Just go in and provide good, reasoned responses as you would any other interview. More importantly, be yourself. You may be asked to clarify, or you may be asked further questions. It also doesn't hurt to ask questions about the interviewer himself or herself as well as about the school itself.

Are you trying to practice giving 10 minutes responses for the MMI interview? You are only allotted 8 minutes of actual talk time from what I remember. The other two minutes is reserved for reviewing the prompt.

The advice given in the post above by medickbd is good advice.

It's still eight minutes to talk, two to read first.
