Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Don't worry about being at exactly 10 minutes. Just go in and provide good, reasoned responses as you would any other interview. More importantly, be yourself. You may be asked to clarify, or you may be asked further questions. It also doesn't hurt to ask questions about the interviewer himself or herself as well as about the school itself.

Are you trying to practice giving 10 minutes responses for the MMI interview? You are only allotted 8 minutes of actual talk time from what I remember. The other two minutes is reserved for reviewing the prompt.

The advice given in the post above by medickbd is good advice.

It's still eight minutes to talk, two to read first.

Ah ok
Cheers
Reading the question and answering it takes me usually 7 minutes.
So if you finish reading the question within a minute, are you suppose to wait for the full 2 minutes before you head in? 😕

If you finish reading the question and know what you are going to say you still have to wait outside the door until a bell sounds (or something along these lines) before you enter the room. They'll explain it in detail before you actually start.

Ah ok, I see.
Thanks!

Bummer. First post-secondary rejection this morning 🙁
On to the next school.

App withdrawn, interview spot for this Saturday should be open. Best of luck all!

for those of you who stayed at the Jameson West Indy did you use the free shuttle to get from Marian to the airport after the interview? Did it work or should I plan on taking a taxi? If so, any idea how much a taxi is from Marian to airport?

Just cancelled my interview on Sat (10/12), good luck guys!

crap. apparently a committee, DO, and MD letter are not enough for MU. I don't have a science letter unfortunately, and thus I received the incomplete email today.

I would like to know this too. Although are you planning on going to airport straight from the school? Where would you put your suitcase? I was thinking of going from Marian back to the hotel, and then the airport from there, via shuttle.

Ppl who cancel probably got an acceptance elsewhere.

I just have a small suit bag. Most admissions committees are more than willing to let you set your bag down during the interview day so hopefully it works out. I guess a taxi from Marian to airport is around 30-40 dollars so hopefully the hotel shuttle will work, I'll definately ask when I check in

Well disregard my last post lol. I received a complete email. That is weird

I haven't even booked my hotel yet. Is there a list of hotels in the area that provide transportation to/from the airport and to/from Marian?

nope.
I just know about the Jameson Inn and booked that one lol

I'm interviewing this Saturday and checked in at Jameson inn, which if you booked by the number given on Marian website is actually called the Baymont now. And they don't have a shuttle to Marian on Saturday morning. So anyone staying there want to split a cab to and from the school that day?

MU-COM has a last-minute interview vacancy for Blue 1:00 PM on 10/11/2013 (tomorrow).

If you are interested, please email Bryan at [email protected].

The space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

I am down.
This is so bull though. I called in weeks ago to book the shuttle from the hotel to Marian and someone over there told me they booked me. Called in today to confirm what you just said. 😡

I got an e-mail about being complete. I went back through the website and now I'm becoming more interested in this school as I learn more.

I totally would if I could. But I'm in Louisiana. I guess I have to keep waiting on an ii!

What kind of questions do people usually get for the MMI's? Are most medically related?

All I will say is that they are questions designed with the purposes of getting you to think in different ways and being able to give thoughtful, reasoned answers. There are no right or wrong answers per se. There is no expectation of prior medical knowledge, so everyone is more or less on the same level. Don't stress too much about it. It's actually kind of fun. Good luck.

I have been practicing. For most mmi questions, I can only achieve about 4 minutes on average.
How interactive is the interviewer? Kind of worried since the allowance is 8 minutes!

I wouldn't stress about it. They have a list of follow up questions they ask you after the initial one. In one of mine we exhausted the questions and then spent the remaining minute or two chit chatting about me. As long as you're a normal human and can hold a conversation I think you'll be fine 🙂

Is there a meet & greet the night before, or anyone want to meet up for dinner? My flight gets in around 7pm. I'll pitch in for a cab to/from the hotel to the interview as well.

I'd say you could be either normal or human and still have a shot. (she's^^ part cat)😉😀

Phew. That's a relief!
Thanks!
Looking forward to it!

If you stay at Jameson, they have a shuttle from the airport.
I'm staying there and is up for a meet and greet with some fellow SDNers

I just called Jameson/Baymont and they said they have a shuttle scheduled Sat morning at 7am for Marian. Guess we won't need a taxi.

lol whaat.

edit:
just called in
shuttle leaves hotel at 7:30am. According to google map, it will be near 10 minutes in good traffic condition. Will that be enough time as interview starts at 8am?

MU-COM does not release any statistics in the middle of the admissions cycle. Statistics will only be released in the fall of each year prior to the start of orientation.

What number are you guys calling to ask about the shuttle? I asked the front desk again and they said that there isn't going to be a shuttle Saturday morning. I am so confused, I guess we'll see tomorrow. This is for the Baymont on eagle view drive right?

Yes, that's the hotel I'm staying at. I spoke with a few people at the hotel who confirmed a shuttle/van to and from Marian for tomorrow morning.

I'm scheduled to be picked up at the airport tonight, so I'll verify when I check in.

Btw, are we meeting up for dinner tonight, all those folks who are staying at the same hotel?

Alternate list applicants should complete the Response Form within 2 weeks. Do not complete the Confirmation tab at this time.

Have a good weekend,

Just interviewed here today
Loved it! Great school, faculty and facilities.

Absolutely phenomenal facilities at the school. I thought LMU's anatomy department was impressive, but I believe Marian's is better.

"Competing" against 6 other people for MMI "ranking" kinda stinks, but hopefully we all did well.

I have no idea how I scored, but I went into the day and just acted like myself. Hopefully Marian was as impressed with me as I was with them. Regardless of my admission decision, everyone should give Marian a shot. I think they will make some big waves in the future and move Osteopathic education further ahead.

for current/ accepted students:
Would if be okay if we wait till first week of December to pay the seat deposit fee?

Thanks!

During the interview, they said deposit was due by Dec 15 i believe.

I interviewed this past weekend as well, and was also very impressed. They detailed to us at the closing info sessions that they are trying to make MU-COM one of the top osteopathic schools in the next five years, and I'm convinced that it will happen. The faculty seem dedicated to the school and the students, and they currently have 39 clinical partnerships with 10 more or so pending. As hard as I looked for a weakness or downside to this school, I could find none.

The whole MMI ranking system kind of confused me as well. I don't really understand how they use it in their decision making process or how much weight it carries. I'm not overly concerned about how I did but there were a couple stations that kind of made me feel stupid.

Basically it's set up so that you don't get massacred by messing up one single interview, but it's not perfect.

about to withdraw my interview for 10/26... hopefully one of you guys get it! best of luck.
