Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry if this has already been addressed, but this is my first time posting here and I haven't read all the posts.

Has anybody on here been placed on hold pre-interview? I received the following message from Bryan Moody a couple weeks ago, and I just don't know how to take it. Is it good? Bad? Or does it not really mean anything? Any input would be greatly appreciated, so thanks in advance!

"During our screening, your clear preparation for medical school, for which I congratulate you, was observed. However, your overall application is slightly less competitive than some other applicants, but the committee is still interested in your candidacy. As such, your application is on hold. The committee will review your application again in one month."

I know a lot of people got interviews after they got placed on hold. I was placed on hold early in the cycle and I received my ii two weeks ago. So don't worry too much if you're placed on hold. This is one of the few schools where you will actually get a chance.

Thank you so much for this, it definitely keeps my hopes alive!

I'm living proof too. I was placed on hold at the beginning of September and received an ii at the beginning of October. I am excited about the opportunity. They must have seen something they like so that makes me feel great about things going in.

Nice, congrats! Hope it goes well! I guess I'll find out within the next month if I'll also receive the opportunity to interview here. Nice to know I still have a chance.

ii today!!!
Scheduled for 11/8 gold
i was also placed on hold on 8/29
very excited to interview here again!
Anyone else interviewing on 11/8?

I see a few people getting upset about being rejected/wait-listed post interview because of grades and/or mcat. Yes i know that can be frustrating, but you have to remember mucom was a new school last year. I don't think they expected the volume of highly qualified applicants that they received.
I was in the same situation last year. I had a great interview at mu-com and was wait-listed due to my mcat score. Yes it was very disappointing, but marian's staff was more than informative and detailed about why i was wait-listed. I feel they are very approachable and update you every step of the way!
Mmi was surprisingly fun and if you are better at face to face interviews you still have an opportunity for that!

Congrats to those accepted!

11/8 gold! :d

Got an email notification that the committee didn't get to my file this week due to the large volume of files and that they meet again on the 24th. Bummer, not sure when to expect to hear back now.

Has anyone been to campbell/nova, and what do you think of Marian in comparison? I'm slightly concerned by the fact that I couldn't bike in the area as its pretty bad outside the campus area, would need to drive elsewhere.

Campbell/Nova are both pretty different from even each other. Anyhow, cycling is huge at Marian University. The cycling team has won the national championship like 8 years in a row or something. There are people cycling all over around here. Lots of people bike to class every day from the surrounding areas.

Like Kenobi said, Marian is HUGE in cycling. We also have a velodrome right down the street (literally right next door) that is run/managed by Marian. I see people bike to/from campus everyday! Also, we're not too far from hopping onto the Monon Trail (huge trail that goes through the entire city) and biking along there.

+1. Okay with that, though. They meet much more often than some other schools! We'll probably hear next week after the committee meeting on Thursday.

Wooohoooo accepted!!

Got the call form Bryan a little while ago. It was a really nice call and he took the time to explain my application strengths and talk a little more about the school. This really is a top notch school! I'm pretty much speechless

Congrats! 🙂

I literally almost cried after Bryan stated all of my application strengths when he called to notify me of my acceptance to MU-COM a few weeks ago. 😳

I know its almost therapeutic-like. We all have been working so hard for years just for this very moment and it is so nice to hear someone recognizing all of it 🙂

Congrats guys! Great feeling indeed.

Hopefully we all get that call next week.

Totally...it's been a few weeks since my acceptance call, but I still get a little emotional thinking about it. 😛

do i have to worry about getting into good residency from this school or are those worries unfounded

getting into a good residency is based mostly on you and your board scores. Now, the other things that help such as clubs, good letters of rec, and good rotations are also important. Marian has made sure all this is available for you to take full advantage of. For example you can help be a founding member of a new club, or blow away your rotations at the nearby hospitals (who are super pumped to have you btw) and get amazing letters of rec from them.

I wonder if they've looked at the waitlist yet. My SO and I drove by the school earlier today while returning from a mini vacation in Muncie. We both like the school a lot.

those of you who got accepted, did you talk for 8 minutes in all stations?! do you think its bad if I end up talking about 5 minutes or so in each station?!
Thanks 🙂

You talk as long as necessary to discuss as many aspects of the prompt as you can. Personally, my interviewer and I discussed topics outside of the prompt in nearly every station. Only 1 station did I talk about the prompt for the entire 8 minutes.

Don't stress man, the MMI stations at Marian are designed to see how you think, not stress you out.

advice on the interviews:
you really don't need to practice at all. Just make sure you address both sides of the issue from different angles, and say which stance you take at the end.

Really don't stress at all, most of the questions are actually fun.

When you are done speaking they will ask a follow up question or just say "do you have any questions for me"

Okay, that makes me feel better, I was under the mistaken impression that I would be mugged on my way to school or on a ride. Nova and Campbell are very different, I liked Campbell's feel but wished it was closer to things, nova was right in the middle of everything you could want and is a huge campus, I'm thinking Marian is probably similar to campbell in its newness/facilities but has access to everything the city offers, which is nice

II today except the only open dates aren't until January 17 and 18!!! 🙁 I'm hoping some dates open up as people get accepted to other schools!!

A slot will open up for the 10/26 date 😉 Look out for it!

Went to the Colts/Broncos game tonight. I love this city! Makes me want to matriculate here

The 2017 FB page was called: Marian University College of Medicine (MU-COM) Class of 2017!!!

The Class of 2017 page was started and run by a current student.

If you start one, please post it here then the admissions office will share it with everyone admitted.

This school is so cool. It's been months and their input on this thread blows me away. Can't wait to meet everyone at my interview in a few weeks

I dreamt I was in Indianapolis lol. I really want that ii!

Greetings! There are two interview openings for this weekend: one on Friday afternoon and one on Saturday morning. If interested, please email me at [email protected].

Vacancies are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Thank you,

I believe this was the hotel I stayed at, although they changed their name.

If you are going to attempt to use the shuttle service, double, triple, quadruple check with the front desk that everything is scheduled. Then ask to speak to the manager to ensure they have everything scheduled. Then ask for a print-out or copy of the verification that the shuttle is scheduled. Then repeat the above the morning of the interview.

Myself and 3 other people were stuck outside of the school for over an hour because the hotel "forgot" to schedule the shuttle to pick us up, after I did all of the above, minus getting a copy of the paper to prove it.

Also, my room smelled of things I don't care to discuss and I ended up having to leave my window open all night to air it out.

In other words...I hope you have a better experience than I (we) did!

What back5 said.
Check and check again with the shuttle.

well that's..........depressing. I am driving my car to the hotel, looks like I will be driving myself to to the school as well.

Is there any information available then about last years cycle?

Is there any information available then about last years cycle?

You should be able to find that info throughout this thread. I posted a pic a few weeks back with all the metrics for last years cycle. Hope that helps.
