Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was placed on hold. I'm actually happy about that since I'm a Louisiana resident. How many of you have has success after being placed on hold? Thanks

Applied to Marion. Excited! 🙂

Hey all! Anyone else interviewing this Friday? And potentially meeting up for dinner Thursday/Friday evening? I think it could be fun! Also, does anyone who interviewed already know if we're allowed to take notes while reading the prompt? Getting excited!

Yes, you can take notes down while reading the prompts. Good luck!

You may be overthinking this. If you stay calm and just relax, you won't need to jot down notes.

I promise, these prompts are not there to trick you. They simply want to see how you think. Imagine it as a conversation. Person across from you presents an idea (prompt) and you discuss it back and forth. Of course, try to present as many facets of the idea as you can, to demonstrate your ability to reason through an idea, but that's all. If you stall or struggle, the interviewer will even toss some ideas at you to spur some thought. "Have you considered this..."

What I've learned on the interview trail this year: You cannot fake it through this process. Not that I've tried, but every interview has been different enough that you cannot ever know what that particular interviewer is looking for.

Just be yourself, relax, and have fun. You will perform better under those circumstances.

II yesterday and scheduled for 1/17! (the most recent availability, wow!)
App complete 9/19, confirmed 9/28

Was put on the alternate list, 3rd quartile.... So sad 🙁((
Thinking about that letter of intent though, not sure if it'll help, but this school is definitely a top choice for me

Accepted!
Just had a wonderful chat with Mr. Moody.
Feeling great!

Excited for my interview on the 26th, I interviewed here last year (waitlisted) and was really impressed with the school, especially considering they were brand new. The Dean really knows his stuff. Anyone else interviewing with me?

for those of you who stayed at the Jameson West Indy did you use the free shuttle to get from Marian to the airport after the interview? Did it work or should I plan on taking a taxi? If so, any idea how much a taxi is from Marian to airport?

I know it's probably too late to answer your question, but I stayed there last year and im staying there again this weekend. Last year I didnt know they had a shuttle from the airport (had a nightmare of a bus trip), but I took it from the hotel to the school and back and it worked out very well. this year the lady at the front desk said they can take me to and from the airport but NOT to and from the school. For anyone else in this situation, I'm gonna try using an Uber car-- i've never tried it before but ive heard its more reliable than a taxi and to get from the hotel to MU it'll cost 12-13 bucks. Its just an app that you download on your smartphone and it's been really easy to use so far. You can even roll up to MU in a classy Lincoln Towncar if you want to double the price haha.

If you want a promo code that'll get you ten bucks off the Uber car PM me.

Congrats CK! I've been seeing you on a lot of the same threads as me and I've been rooting for ya!

Anyone interviewing this saturday (the 26th) want to meet up for dinner friday night? I am staying at the Jameson Inn.

I'm staying in the Jameson Inn too, I'm down for some dinner Friday but won't have transportation of my own. I know there's a Cracker Barrel right next door (ate there every night last year, we don't have those in the PNW) and I think a McDonald's and Applebees or something within the block. PM me if you still wanna get dinner or hang out!

Slightly off-topic, but does anyone have a feel for how glbt-friendly this area/school is? Anything good/bad pertaining to glbt or other minorities?

Accepted yesterday! Had a great convo with Mr. Moody about my app & interview strengths; really felt wanted by Marian. 🙂 Interviewed 10/12, thought the interview went really well (actually really liked the MMI--it really played to my strengths).

Interview here in 2 weeks. So for MMI:

1. Talk through the prompt by framing both sides or multiple sides of a course of action/argument

2. At the end give your final recommendation for the scenario

Is this the general gist?

That's exactly how I approached the MMI prompts. I discussed every side I could logically think of, and stated how I would approach the prompt given everything I just presented. I had a lot of fun during the MMI.

I was rejected, so take that with a grain of salt.

I know we have a few lgbt students in our class and at least 1 professor who is, too. I'm not sure how they feel about the area but I've never gotten a bad vibe from Marian about that. I'd say the medical school & students are a pretty open group of people. The city seems to be a pretty open city about this, too. I've experienced no negativity surrounding the lgbt community since I've been here. Hope that answers your question. 🙂

Yep, that's what I did. There's usually a lot to consider for each prompt, so talking about all the options/all the factors to consider usually took most of the time at a station. At stations where I felt strongly about choosing one option, I said so & discussed why (or why that was the best out of all the options). At a few stations I honestly stated it really would depend on more information and that I really didn't know which way I would decide when "in the moment," and the interviewers seemed okay with that (especially since I'd discussed all the options thoroughly before).

Idk, I didn't find myself agonizing over which way to go with the prompts--usually I had a gut reaction after first reading each prompt. Your interviewers will ask follow-up questions (and/or provide more info), too, and that'll also help guide your thinking/decision-making.

Really don't stress about it--I hardly prepped at all for the interview (familiarized myself with the MMI format, researched the school a bit) and yet still felt very comfortable during the MMI. They want to see how you think & reason--if you're a logical person and can look at issues from all sides, Marian's MMI won't be bad.

could not have said it better myself...I interviewed here yesterday, and although I did prep a bit, I would say that it was overkill and that with less prep I probably would have had the same performance.

The school itself is absolutely gorgeous, they really did their homework when designing everything from the building to the curriculum. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for the next week or two.

So MUCOM, how's the waitlist movement going? Should we expect movement come Dec 15th?

The alternate list will be reviewed at least once before December. It is too early to predict the likelihood of movement, though.

How many people are on waitlist? Enough for someone say in the first quartile to have a pretty good shot?

Hello everyone, I applied at MU-COM and submitted my secondaries recently. Any chance for acceptance or atleast an interview??

I have similar stats, and I got an interview. Of course, it depends on a lot of other factors, but hopefully that gives you more hope. Good luck to you!

Definitely hoping for some movement on the wait list 🙂

Definitely hoping for some movement on the wait list 🙂

I know last year about 6 or something percent of all accepted students were off the wait list. So... basically about 30 people got off the waitlist. That being said I think since they have been interviewing more competitive applicants they will have waitlist movement similar to other DO schools.

Interview for 12/14 and I'm very excited! Going to be driving there 🙂
