Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I feel so uneasy about the interview. I loved the style of it, but I'm not sure I showed them everything I could!

Anyone know if there's an opening for the upcoming week? The 16?

You would have to check the MUDO Portal under the "Interview" tab to identify available slots. And check back here to see if anyone cancels and leaves a post! : )

Hey everyone. I will be interviewing this coming Friday afternoon (Gold). I was just wondering if anyone else on here will be interviewing that day or will at least be in the area..... I would love to get dinner Thursday or Friday night while getting to know you guys.

The first interview spots that are open are in February. Periodically, we receive cancellations from students who withdraw due to acceptance at another COM. Those spots are offered to applicants on our ASAP list. To add your name, email Bryan at [email protected].

Admissions

The first installment of the Advantage Series for admitted and deposited students will be in the portal by the end of the week. This installment will focus on the curriculum.

Enjoy,

I know the 6 stations grade you on a 1 to 7 scale. Is the final 20 minute interview also graded on a 1-7 scale?

Pretty sure it was out of 49, so that would make sense, postbac

Do you have a particular place to send letters of intent or interest?

Will there be one on rotations/residencies in the next few weeks?

Had a blast during the MMI and I really enjoyed the campus tour. I would like to give a special thanks to the students that volunteered their time to make our visit wonderful the day before your exam, it was very much appreciated.

No. General score information is shared only with admitted students.

Admissions
Hello MUCOM, I have a admission question:

I see on the website that MUCOM will require 3 credits of Biochemistry for next year applicants. Does this require a lab with the lecture?

Edit: Is there any way for the biochemistry requirement to be waived if a school does not offer the subject?

The biochemistry requirement is for a 3 credit lecture only. The requirement is not waived.

Just clarifying that biochemistry [as well as psychology and sociology] are requirements for the entering 2015, not 2014, DO class.

I apologize if this has been answered previously, but I would just like to clarify. The 20 minute interview is closed file?

Yes, it is. However, when I walked in, the first thing he asked was what my GPA and MCAT are... :nailbiting:

Haha oh man. Mine was way more generic. There never really was the chance to state my scores, maybe I shoulda just blurted them out. Oh well

Kinda half way thru the interview, we did have some good conversations about GPA/other scores..

I will be giving up my acceptance here, I hope one of you guys that has been waitlisted on here gets it!
Good luck everyone! This is a really fantastic school

Looking forward to my Interview here. Hopefully an earlier slot will open up and I can sneak in before February.

officially rejected pre-interview 🙁 sad, but it's all good! Best of luck to everyone else! : o)

Just wondering if the adviser letter of recommendation could be waived or substituted with another science professor letter. Does anyone know?

On the admission requirements link on their website it says you can substitute the advisor letter with another science professor. It also was asked somewhere in the thread a while back. Just look through the official MUCOM posts and you will find it.

:xf:Today is the day...good luck everyone. Thank you for keeping us all in your thoughts Postbac. I will do the same!

I just had a question about accreditation. I know that the school will be accredited in 4 years. But let’s say that after 4 years, (I know it’s an unlikely event!) heaven forbid the school is not accredited and they can’t grant you a doctoral degree in medicine. Are you still responsible to pay the 300-400k of student loans back? Because, that would really be an impossible situation. I just wanted to know, especially for those students that have admissions to an accredited medical school, I think it is important to know all factors before making a decision.

MU-COM has the highest accreditation possible for a new COM. Moreover, COCA requires all new osteopathic schools to have an escrow account equal to 4 years of tuition for the inaugural class. So, MU-COM's escrow account is over $27 million. This is held and not touched by the school until the first class graduates. It is the safety net in case something would happen and full accreditation is not granted. This has never happened in the US though.

To date, all of our accreditation standards have been met.

Waitlisted, 2nd quartile. Could be worse, I suppose!

Good luck to everyone awaiting news today. I am interviewing this weekend. I actually arrived here a bit early in order to learn a little bit more about the area. Would anyone like to get lunch or dinner tonight or tomorrow if you are in the area?

Thanks for the reply, I really hope that there is some great movement in the waitlist!

They never specified which batch we would be in. I received an e-mail today telling me to rest easy because they didn't reach my file this week. Next week will be the week.

The Advantage Series has started for admitted and deposited students. The first volume is in the portal now; it focuses on the curriculum. Next week, look for volume 2 on the faculty.

I recieved 2nd quartile alternate list as well. I'm not ready to let Marian go just yet...Gonna make a well thought out letter of intent.

Interviewed here on the 8th and I was overly impressed as all the other schools that I have interviewed at are far less impressive than Marian. The location, staff and the general community feeling were quite powerful. You can tell they put so much effort in designing this school. I am hoping for an acceptance, however they did not have time to review my file on Thursday so I have to wait a whole week. *Fingers crossed* as this is my first choice school. The MMI was fun and had some interesting questions. Definitely keeps you thinking. I just found some of the topics interesting and wanted to question the interviewer which may have ruined the intent. I feel good but not great about the interview. One more week of waiting is going to kill me...ugh. Also, are there any acceptances for anyone else interviewed on the 8th of November, or did their files not get reached either??
