Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone know what percentage of interviewees get accepted??
They said above that it is roughly 50%. But I am under the impression that that is over the entire cycle so early interviewees may have a higher chance (70-80%) while later interviewees may have a lower chance (20-30%). Averaging out to the 50%...

Also placed on hold in the first round of reviews, I just received an II. I'm delighted to be among their first interviewees for this cycle, on 9/12.
Hey, did you pick blue group starting at 12:30 pm?

When I registered, the calendar showed two gold groups and I found that odd. So no, not blue.

Sometimes, we only run one cohort (blue or gold) depending what else is happening the building. More likely, though, the blue cohorts were already taken.

from combing previous application threads it seems like the cutoff is sgpa 3.2 and mcat 24 and there is not much leniency. does anyone know why an applicant would get a secondary invite if below these stats if primary apps are screened? just for money im assuming??

I seriously doubt MU-COM offers secondary invites for the money. If you're invited to interview, you'll see they spare no expense when it comes to giving your application the full attention it deserves. Admissions representatives are able to recognize most people on sight, and some can recall your specific details on a whim. Although some schools give the distinct impression their application cycles are a cash cow, I don't believe this is the case with Marian.

Many applicants improve their stats during the application process. Last cycle, I was offered a secondary with less than a 3.2 sgpa and with exactly a 24 MCAT. During the cycle, I took a great number of science courses and raised my MCAT, eventually earning an interview and alternate list spot (although that is where I remained). I believe MU-COM reps genuinely believe in a holistic review, although no school can escape the necessity of good numbers.

Yes, this is what I was thinking in the back of my head--I went to their open house last year and I got the same vibe. As long as my app is read and given a thought that's all I care about, can't be too disappointment with the competitiveness of everything.

At the pre-screen stage, our first and only concern is if the applicant has an ability to pass the curriculum and pass COMLEX. If you are invited to complete a supplemental, we are interested in your application. Without going into specific numbers, applicants with less than 3.2 and 24 are invited to interview, are admitted, and are in each class. Hope this helps.

Is this for the applicants who have been placed on hold as well?
Thank you in advance! 🙂

Placed on hold. Taking this as a positive. Could have been an outright rejection.

if you have a 2nd science faculty letter to replace advisor LOR will that show up on the application status page? or will the advisor LOR status remain "incomplete"?

I feel so privileged to have been offered an interview at MU-COM today! I signed up for the September 13th interview date at 10am, is anyone else going to be interviewing on that day? This school is amazing and stands for everything that I hope to represent as a future physician!

Congratulations! Keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be extended an invite as well.

Thanks! Today is definitely one of the happiest days of my life. I hope you get extended an interview too, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Yes, if the letter has been received, screened, and accepted. We are currently behind one week with letters of recommendation due to a staff illness. The 2nd science letter is marked as an advisor letter in the portal.

OK thank you, all 3 of my letters were sent at the same time via interfolio but only 2 of them are reflected on status page. I didn't know if that meant the 2nd science letter wasn't approved.

That is generally what it means, but call 317-955-6297 to confirm.

Does anyone know about the special masters program at Marian?

Applicants who have a <3.2 and also a <24 ? :O So like someone with a 3.1/23? Or do you mean someone with a 3.1/30 or 3.7/22?
Or both? 😀

Does anyone know if your DO letter has to be in before they would look at your application or if you can be offered an interview before it is in?

Any insight on when your interview is considered late? March perhaps?

I know that my file wasn't marked complete until they had received all of my letters of recommendation, including the letter from the DO that I shadowed.

So about this "practicing in Indiana" question. Is it a deal breaker if I say no?

So about this "practicing in Indiana" question. Is it a deal breaker if I say no?

Where are you from originally? Also, have you read up on Indiana? It's one of the most progressive states in the US for all of the life sciences, so it naturally follows that it is also a really amazing place to practice medicine.

That being said, I would't recommend lying or "bending the truth" on your secondary application

I'd rather not reveal where I'm from but I am leaning toward staying in my home state. That said I haven't done much research on Indiana- do you know where I can find more information practicing in Indiana?

I think you should rethink the way you look at the question. Remember it isn't asking you to practice in Indiana but if you want to practice in Indiana and of course you do. You want to be in a place that you would be happy and you could build a career in right? Of Course you do. Well Indiana is that place. There are many things in Indiana that other states have for your eventual practice. Think of it like a question asking more about interests not about where you think you will practice. Marian is a med SCHOOL not a set career. Be open to it and explain why you are interested through what you want to practice in medicine.

It is a state that pays for its subsidized health care through tobacco funds (so eligible people sit on a waiting list even though they have a $2Billion dollar subsidy) and did not expand medicare, it has one of the lowest rates of OB/GYN providers per county but it does have great medical malpractice rules (physician panel and caps). It is a state of contrasts. Still it has a lot going for it
Also the second largest area that needs a level one trauma unit does not have one, even though the university promotes urban health to the students (IU Northwest)

How official does the "passport-type photo" have to be? I have a good pic taken with my cell phone, in front of my school's wallpaper (was helping setup lighting for photo op at career fair). I used it for the MSUCOM secondary.

This is after you get the II right?

You're overthinking this. Make sure it is professional looking and you should be fine. Vacation photos are a no-no.

This looks pretty legitimate. Make sure you have a blue background, though.

So I just got my MCAT scores back and I had them sent to AACOMAS and they got verified. I already submitted the secondary and my LOR a few weeks ago and my application is now fully complete. Does Marian get notified that my MCAT score has been verified onto AACOMAS?

Yes. We will receive a revised primary application with the new MCAT score.

@MU COM
I was put on hold as of 8/28. Just prior to that, my summer grades for grad school posted, and I had the associated transcript sent to AACOMAS. It does not look like these will be processed, and subsequently transmitted, to Marian in time for the next 2 review meetings.
The email I received indicated that I was on hold, not deferred for grades, so will this make much of a difference for my application review?

It could, depending on how many classes, what types of classes, the grades earned etc. Verification is currently taking about 4-5 weeks, but adding classes should go faster. At this time, consider contacting AACOMAS for more info then contact us directly at 317.955.6297 if you still have questions.

Thanks for the response. I spoke to AACOMAS this morning, and it looks like it could be another 2 weeks. It's 2 grad classes (MPH), and only slighty affects my GPAs. Probably doesn't really add anything new to my information. The volunteer activities will, but those have yet to start, so I can't add those to AACOMAS just yet.
