Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As long as our LORs are completed and submitted to AACOMAS, MUCOM should download them automatically correct?

Yes, eventually, but we are currently finishing programming to pull them into our admissions database on a weekly basis. This should be completed within a week.

**Applicants submitting letters through AACOMAS will not be disadvantaged in our review process because all screened files are batched together for interview invites.**

Admissions

Did your letters get downloaded from Interfolio? I am also curious what day they download them since they said in the email it is only once a week.

Typically, but not always, on Mondays.

TO ALL APPLICANTS:

Please read MU-COM's LOR Guidelines, which are posted here and earlier in the thread. Here are the processing steps:
  1. Applicants submit letter(s) of recommendation.
  2. MU-COM downloads submitted recommendations once a week, IF our processing guidelines are followed. [In other words, this is NOT an automatic, instantaneous process.]
  3. Once downloaded, you will receive an acknowledgement email from us.
  4. After the acknowledgement email, the letters are read for completeness, which can take 2-3 weeks.
  5. If the letter(s) is/are complete, your portal will be updated. It is only at this time that you will see the red exclamations change to green check marks on the CHECK STATUS tab in the portal. When a letter goes from red to green, we have accepted it as fulfilling one of our three letter requirements: advisor/committee, science, and physician.
While we appreciate your interest, contacting us before these five steps are complete will only delay processing for everyone. Finally, access to the portal is granted only when an invitation to complete a supplemental application is made. [An invitation to complete a supplemental will not be made without an MCAT score.]

We hope this helps.

Thanks,
MU-COM

I just checked my portal and I see all green check marks! I have been marked as complete. MU COM has been great at communicating with applicants so far this cycle.

Thanks! Next, you will be assigned to a screener who will make an interview recommendation. Once you have been assigned, you will receive another email from us.

NOTE: Due to some changes to our internal processes, screening will not start before July 24th, though.

Same for me!

I got the email telling me my LORs were received, but my portal has not been updated. It has been more than 24 hours since the email. Should I contact the school?

No. Look above 3 or 4 posts from @mucom.

Thank-you MU-COM and Snoozer33! I missed the distinction between received and complete for the checkmarks.

@mucom - will applicants be contacted if there is something wrong with the letters, or should the applicants follow up after the 2-3 week period?

Thanks for your help!

I haven't received an e-mail yet regarding downloading my LoRs from MU-COM and my secondary has been submitted for awhile, should I be worried?

Submitting a secondary does not automatically mean we download letters. Please read our LOR Guidelines. Finally, we have not yet moved letters from AACOMAS into our portal.

Once each weekly download of letters is processed, we will send a "complete" or "incomplete" status update by email. After that, please check the portal. Then, if you have questions, feel free to contact us.

Ok all my letters are on AACOMAS. Thank you, I appreciate the response!

@MU COM Would you recommend calling MU administration to change an incorrect unofficial MCAT score on my primary? The official score is correct.

I'm just worried that the discrepancy will be looked upon negatively...

We only review official scores.
If invited to complete a supplemental, I would mention the discrepancy in the last question.

anyone here recently who submitted secondary get an update email from mucom regarding complete status?

my secondary was submitted 7/4, and no update yet regarding letters or complete status

@MU COM My online portal says I'm complete but I haven't received any email saying I"m complete. Is that normal? Thanks for your help!

I submitted my secondary 6/28 and have not received anything regarding my letters as well and on my page it still lists my application as incomplete due to my letters being absent. I believe they have stated before on here that they haven't downloaded LoRs from AACOMAS yet, which are where mine are.

check your portal to see the status. i submitted on 7/9 and haven't received any email about LOR or complete status.. it shows in my portal that I'm complete.

btw: I didn't send LORs through AACOMAS or interfolia. sent it directly from undergrad letter service electronically.

Does MUCOM accept LORs from physicians who are neither MD/DO? One my references is from a doctor who practices family medicine here, is fully licensed, but has an MBBS (from the UK).

Is an advisor/committee letter required? Or can it be substituted with another science letter? Sorry if this has already been answered.

does anyone know the dress code for OMM lab at mucom (for guys)

We do not. The requirement is DO or MD.

We prefer an advisor/committee letter. If unavailable, a science letter can be substituted.

Admissions

P.S. We define science as a hard science: chemistry, bio, physics, etc.

7/15/15

Earlier today, MU-COM downloaded all letters from AACOMAS. We are sending "LOR Received" email acknowledgements now. Application statuses are updated in our portal as letters are read/reviewed. Portal access is granted only if applicants are/have been invited to complete a supplemental application. New AACOMAS letters will now be downloaded once a week.

Admissions

P.S. Per our LOR Guidelines the process of reviewing letters can take 2-3 weeks [or longer depending on volume].

Question for @mucom, does the file review still plan to begin on 7/24? Do you have an estimate for when interview invites would be extended?

So I was rejected on 6/30 but just got an email today saying my LOR's were received...

@MU COM I sent in my secondary on the 13th and everything has been received. I forgot to mention in the application that I will be taking a course in August to fulfill the chemistry requirements, but it's mentioned in my AACOMAS application already. So, should I still send in an update letter? or an email?

@MU COM I had a prehealth committee letter packet but its >5 years since I was last in undergrad (graduated 2010 with letters from 2008-2009) and so my answer to the question about this on the secondary is yes, however, I do not intend to use it as I have new letters from grad school and work employment as I have been working for the past 2 years. I have listed the prehealth advisor as indicated. Is it ok if I only use my new LORs?

Also, for the question "Do you have plans to complete a postbaccalaureate program or graduate degree prior to matriculation at MU-COM? (If you do not complete this degree, you must notify MU-COM in writing), does this refer to if I already obtained a degree or am in the process of getting one as I have my MPH already and am confused if I should indicate yes or no to the question.

Thanks in advance!

Secondary finally submitted. Got it a lot later due to aacomas MCAT glitch.

Complete emails will go out later this week when screening starts, which will be no later than 7/24.

Interview invites should start on 8/7 ... approximately.

Sorry about that. Since we are reviewing recommendations in AACOMAS manually, we did not integrate the download with application statuses. This has been corrected.

New letters would be strongly advised. The advanced degree question pertains to anything in which you are currently enrolled AND it is not listed on your primary application.

Can someone please tell me what the questions on the secondary app are? Your help is appreciated!
