Given the continued confusion about hold status, here is an explanation of the process directly from Marcy:
So, the take home message is not to assume that you're rejected or that you have no chance if you didn't get an acceptance this round after being ranked. You're still eligible for consideration each time they decide to send out acceptances. And there are still 35 acceptances to be given out between now and March 15th. After that there will likely be more as people get in off the waitlist. As highlighted by Marcy, I was put on hold as well (and waitlisted), and got in. In fact, many of my classmates were also on hold before being accepted. Especially for applicants that interviewed this early in the season. And on that note, don't panic if you haven't even interviewed yet and figure there will be no spots left by the time you do. A bunch of my classmates interviewed in the winter and spring and got in too. Anyway, I'll give another pep post later when we get closer to March. But basically, it's not over until the first day of classes.....
For anyone that gets invited to interview, the earliest rejection you will get at this point is shortly after March 15. If you have been reviewed by the committee or "ranked", then you are eligible for acceptance offers. For example, yesterday we appointed/offered acceptances to 7 students. The remaining students that had already interviewed AND had already been ranked, then go into a "hold" status. This doesn't mean they cannot still get an acceptance offer, it simply means they were not offered an acceptance at the first time they were eligible. We are on a rolling admissions so the deans will continue to offer acceptances on a varied timeline and no real predictability at this point. We will also continue to review new applications, continue to invite applicants to interview, and continue to interview applicants every Monday and Friday through the middle of February. March 15 is when enough offers will have to go out to fill the class per AAMC traffic rules. This hold status could potentially continue until March 15. After that time, if you still have not been offered an acceptance, one of two things may happen.
1. Offered a seat on an alternate list (Alternate list is not created until after March 15)
2. Not selected
Please [note] that several students now attending Mayo Medical School were once in a hold status [myself (i.e., Phoenix) included]. It is important to note that if you are a student that has already interviewed but has not gone before the committee, you were not eligible for appointments yesterday. You wouldn't be eligible unless you have been ranked by the committee, and of course you won't get a ranking until you have interviewed. Again, the ranking is not a rank order list, and it is not released to the student. There will be several more acceptances that will be offered from now until July 20th when matriculation happens!

, and the whole 3 minute ride which my parents paid alot for at the zoo was a nightmare for me, and my parents wouldn't let me get off because we already paid the fee
But honestly, I don't envy the admissions committee. You guys are all stellar.
