Wow that's incredible! I don't think anyone was straight out accepted OOS last year on SDN. Congrats @ChoopLoops, @Labrat413, @echoing!!!
Congrats!! Ya'll must honestly be incredible. Are any for sure going to commit or are you still waiting to hear and thinking about it?

I pretty much knew I wouldn't get in but I'm very thankful to be offered a waitlist spot. For everyone rejected, keep your heads up. There will be a school for ya.

839 OOS applicants. We normally admit and waitlist just under 100 OOS applicants to seat 20 students.
226 IS applicants. We normally admit and waitlist 95 IS applicants to seat 80 students.

First off, @NCSU CVM, you are at the office too late today 😉 Secondly, will you also be "on track" to deliver IS decisions early like last year??

It's awesome that everyone found out today. Everyone accepted must be pretty darn awesome:clap:!! Congrats to everyone.

Early February for IS decisions.

Hey @NCSU CVM , do IS applicants have to send their fall transcripts by mid-January or do we have to wait for IS decisions before we can send them?

@ziggyandjazzy you've been killing it on interview invites at all your other schools ^_^

Thanks! NCSU was the only school I hadn't heard from yet and it was making me antsy.

But you got in to NC and OSU, two of the hardest OOS schools! That's super incredible

Hey, would any of the OOS people that got accepted or waitlisted share their stats? I remember looking through years of threads trying to find OOS stats with very little luck. It might really help future applicants! 🙂

I was accepted OOS, and I'll be posting my stats to the successful applicants page 🙂 Hope this will be helpful!

Yes, all applicants IS and OOS (admit and waitlist) should submit fall transcripts by the stated deadline.

A reminder e-mail will be sent from the Student Services Office.

Happy Holidays from the NC State CVM Student Services Office!

I'll be going to the open house day next month!

Are there any current or NCSU alumni hanging out in here?
@Lab Vet is a current fourth year and occasionally pops around. @hygebeorht is also occasionally around and graduated last year (think she was OOS), and I'm a '16 grad (IS). Don't know of any others.

@Trilt i might bug you a bit about your school experiences over PM at some point 🙂

General question - how good is NC State with feeding programs and student pet's vet care discounts?

Feeding programs were in huge flux when I was a student (and I had mostly ferrets, haha) so that's a current student question unfortunately. Definitely get a discount from all the major companies but I'm not sure what it currently is like.

The general practice service gets you in for super discounted GP care (can be a bit slow to get an appt, but all the vets who work there are fantastic) and I think you get 20% off at the teaching hospital. At least when I was there, they let you pay large bills over time too, which was great when my ferret had his partial pancreatectomy and GI explore.

I was waitlisted.
Cum GPA: 3.84
Science GPA: I calculated it at 3.76 but VMCAS' version was higher than my cum
Last 45: 3.97
Pre-req: 3.91
GRE: 162, 162, 5.0
Vet hours: 620 (almost all at the same SA clinic)
animal hours: ~1100 (pretty wide diversity, mostly with raptors and other wildlife)
Research: 560 (only 280 not for a class)
Is that helpful?

Hi OP. I'm a fourth year at NCSU, set to graduate in May of 2018. I was also accepted OOS (converted to IS my second year), and would be happy to answer any questions that folks have about the NCSU CVM, Raleigh, the OOS-IS conversion process, etc.

Congrats to those who were accepted! To those who were not, and are disappointed- please don't give up, or lose heart. There are MANY good veterinary schools out there, and all of these accredited programs will turn you into an excellent doctor. Don't let one bump in the road deter you from your ambitions. There are animals out there waiting for you to help them, and a school that would just love to have you as a student. Best of success!

Can you guys talk a little about the area? If I come to NCSU I'll be bringing along my SO and I'm curious about what all there is to do. We're from Seattle so we're kind of spoiled with having city night life but also hiking and skiing and the ocean. Is the city pretty bike-able or do people mostly drive? Is housing mostly apartments or is it possible to find houses?

@Lab Vet my understanding was that pretty much everyone OOS is able to get IS tuition after the 1st year but I want to confirm that with you?

Thanks for your time!!!

Happy to answer any questions I can. If you think they'll help others, feel free to put them on-thread, otherwise you can PM me.

@Trilt is correct, I was an OOS student. It's great that you get a visit day in January - when I applied, it wasn't until a week or two before the acceptance deadline in April!

@Trilt, I also was told via email that my application had been rejected during the application process (a transcript I ordered had gotten lost on the way). Ran out of class and called immediately to straighten it out - my heart rate went through the roof!

Also, when I was accepted we were sent small envelopes. When I got mine, the tears started flowing before I even opened it because I thought I had been rejected by my dream school. Then they turned into tears of joy 🙂 No regrets, I would still choose NCSU if I could do it all over again.

I'm very happy for everyone who is getting good news right about now. If you haven't gotten the news you hoped for, feel free to PM me if you want a sounding board.

I brought an SO too. I think you'll really enjoy the Triangle region - lots to do outdoors and close to mountains and ocean. I rented a two-bedroom house near school for $850/mo. YMMV. As long as you are diligent and cross your Ts and dot your Is, you should be able to convert to in-state. Of course it is not a guarantee, but I can't recall anyone who applied that I know of who was not successful.

Thanks @hygebeorht ! The more I've been reading about the program and the area, the more excited I'm getting.

Plus I keep thinking about how compelling this little guy was the other day :cat:

Getting ready for new pups to join the Wolfpack!

Mostly driveable. I lived right down the road from the vet school and would bike occasionally, but it's definitely not a major mode of transportation for most people.

I rented through vet school at a really cheap local place... about a grand for a three bedroom townhouse, which I shared with a roomie and my partner. We bought a nicer townhouse right after I graduated and its definitely possible in the area but you do need to have money and keep an eye out. Real estate is really popping (but honestly, nothing like where my extended family is up in BC and I feel Seattle is basically the American version ha).

And I just realized you asked houses vs apts, not rent vs buy; definitely lots of options either way. Lots of my classmates prioritised having a house with a backyard for dogs and they got it.

You're within a couple hours of the coast and mountains, in opposite directions. Mountains are not quite as stunning as the rockies but still gorgeous and lots of hiking/camping opportunities. There are quite a few state forests within an hour or so. I really can't complain about the area tbh, it's a good city and getting more interesting every year - downtown has seriously blossomed since I started undergrad almost (acckk!!) a decade ago.

@Lab Vet There isn't a vet stay program for Welcome weekend, is there? It would be nice to see where students live (and not have to pay for a hotel room...)

Oh @ChoopLoops - I walked to school a respectable amount, but I lived closer to school than literally any other student I knew. There is a tiny neighborhood to the west of the state fairgrounds that sometimes has a house or two up for rent. There is also a bunch of townhouses across from the cheap movie theater off Blue Ridge south of the school. Both are easily walkable to school, which is good during winter weather. There is also a greenbelt that is bikeable. It's not as super bike friendly as some places, but I had some very dedicated cyclists as classmates.

You can be at the beach in about 2-2.5 hours and mountains in 4 if you drive. But let's be honest, you're going to be a vet student. It wouldn't matter if you were moving to Mars. You don't have time for much, and will mostly spend time on campus.

EDIT: Lastly, if it's open, while you visit you should go to the Boylan Bridge Brewpub. January isn't patio weather, but it has one of the best views of downtown that you can find. Other classic Raleigh spots: Neomonde, The Pit, Fiction Kitchen...and a perennial vet student favorite, Raleigh Brewing Company (RBC!).

Haha, I figured as much. Mostly asking for my partner's benefit ^_^

@hygebeorht, @Trilt these housing/neighborhood recs are really helpful! And the suggestions on what to do while visiting. We'll be staying with family that lives in Chapel Hill and I think they plan on giving us a tour of the area but I don't know how familiar they are with Raleigh specifically.

Hello everyone! I have been silently stalking this forum for the longest time lol 😉 And congratulations to those of you who received acceptances!! So exciting!

I am an OOS Waitlist and in the email I received it says that the alternate list is unranked. Does that mean if a seat opens up the admissions committee chooses someone at random? :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:

Just got a spam call from Raleigh. Totally random but elevated my heart rate for sure lol.

I am also on the waitlist. I was thinking about the unranked thing also. I think they don't usually let people know they are off the waitlist until after the April decision deadline. What would be my guess is that they may "rank" the waitlist as it gets closer or past that date and they know how many, if any people, they will let in off the list. Perhaps based some on Fall grades or certain characteristics. I could be wrong about this but perhaps they don't rank it at this point because they might not let anyone in so it would be a waste of time and resources to do so. I doubt they randomly select people.

Did NC state increase the OOS # of slots? It seems like a lot more were accepted this year but maybe just more people go on SDN. They said previously on this thread a little less than 100 people were waitlisted and accepted combined. 57 were waitlisted per the email. This means around 40 acceptances?

NCSU accepts more than the number of OOS slots right? To account for some people not accepting the offer. This would make sense why they don't usually tell people until April about the waitlist.

Has anyone received the email from admissions about sending in Fall transcripts? I'm IS but I saw earlier that NCSU said their admissions team would send an email with instructions but I haven't heard anything yet. I just want to make sure I don't miss anything...

Just stopping by to say hello 😉 :hello:

@ncsu, at this point is it "no news is good news" as far as passing the initial qualifications check and moving on to the committee, or should we expect to receive an email once it goes on to review stage? (for NC resident students)
