New York COM (NYCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
AHHH!!! I love this school so much but I still haven't received an interview invite. I was complete in October!
3.3 GPA, 30 MCAT, Is sending a letter of intent before an interview invite over the top? I really just want to attend here in the fall!
What to do...

Are you sure your file is 100% complete, including your supplemental application, pre-med committee letter, and physician letter? You might want to call and make sure they have everything. That's what I did. When I called they said it's the right thing to do. You could also ask for some indication as to where in the review process your application stands right now. The adcom people are very friendly!

just cancelled an interview here - new spot should be opening up for Jan 22...

has anyone gotten in with a <28 MCAT score? Lets say a 24 or a 26? Lets also say with those score and someone who has a 3.7 overall average and a 3.6 sGPA

I am a member of the class of 2015 and I was accepted with an MCAT of 27 and a GPA of 3.7 (3.8 sGPA). I know of people accepted with lower, but NYCOM's avg MCAT does seem to be getting higher with each new class.

Had an interview here recently...Very hopefull...

I was just on Turo's forum and asked if they give any special consideration to applicants who can't leave the state because of a family illness etc. Does NYCOM have any special consideration like that? Also does NYCOM favor NY residents?

How was the interview structured? Is it 1 on 1?

Does anyone who has already interviewed have any tips for those you are interviewing in the next few weeks? My first and only interview so I'm really nervous!!

Columbia09 - wherever and whenever you can to make sure the ADCOMs are aware of it...

Where can I mention it? Interview? Application?

This may not be the right thread for this but are you just applying now? Consider waiting... It's not a race. I had a loved one who was very ill for a long time as well and I waited until it resolved to apply. Consider that you may not be able to dedicate yourself to your studies without ignoring this person regardless of which state you go to school in.

Some health conditions may not be resolved within a year...

Me too. This thursday at 11am. I grew up down the road from here and went to school directly across the street so I am pretttyy excited and hopeful that I get in here! Interview was supposed to be months ago but they moved me because of the hurricane.

Interviewed here on 1/8...anyone know their turnaround on decision letters?

anxious to find out about this school...was SUPER impressed on interview day

Just sent in my $1500 deposit this morning. Looks like NYCOM class of 2017 it is.

Anyone know if there is an accepted students page to start looking for housemates and such...

Also anyone else from November 29th interview date attending in the fall?

I started a Facebook page. See above in the thread for a link.

Only joining NYCOM's c/o 2017 is worth reactivating the account, lol

Anyone know if feb is too late to interview? Does it affect chances? Thanks.

Literally the only reason I reactivated my account. I will probably turn it off again for good in June or so. Whenever I figure out where I'm living and whats going on.

Out of curiosity, how many letters of recommendation did you guys sent in?

Twink, I believe I had 6 letters: 2 science, 1 non-science, 1 volunteering director, 2 from doctors..

Did anyone hear anything from NYCOM?

I was accepted a while back and have been looking for housing options. Does anyone know what students do for housing at NYCOM? I've been looking for a studio around the area and everything seems pretty expensive. I'd be fine with a roommate too if it significantly cut down on my living costs. It would be great if a current student could chime in.

I'm not a student but I grew up in old brookville/greenvale area. Many students live in Glen Cove which is about a 10-15 min drive from the school. You could also probably find some cheaper housing in greenvale, roslyn heights, mineola, glen head, and possibly queens too. Glen Cove and green vale are your best options though. I doubt you will find something immediately around the school as it is surrounded by mansions. It is in one of the most expensive areas in the whole country.

Would commuting from queens (bayside) be reasonable? Is the traffic bad in the area? Thanks for the info!

If you have class at 8am there could be some traffic for sure..especially in queens. If you tried to live near a highway it would make things a little easier(like the LIE) Although you will be reverse commuting, a signficant number of peolpe still travel out to long island for work. It would be 100% managable though in my opinion. Also, I believe lecture attendance is not mandatory and they will be streaming the lectures online. Just labs are mandatory. So with all of that Bayside should be legit.

Many people (myself included) live in Glen Cove. The entire area is a bit pricey (especially for me, I'm from NJ and stuff is a lot more expensive up here), but definitely manageable if you have a roommate. I know of people who commute from Queens, and even parts of the city tho, so nothing is really set in stone... depends on your personal preference.

Best bet is to not really worry about all that now... as us second years move on people start posting their old apartments on class facebook pages and whatnot, that's how I came across my current apartment.

What would you say the average student pays per month if you don't mind me asking.

Speaking personally, from what I saw when I was looking and from what I pay now....
Its not uncommon to see rents closer to $2000 (for multi-bedroom apartments). My monthly portion of the rent (I live with one other student) is close to $800. If you have multiple room mates the price usually goes down. I'm sure I could've gotten a place a bit cheaper but I am happy with my apartment and where I live.

I live in a two family home and have the upstairs apartment (3rd years live downstairs), so I'm renting from a private homeowner. Many private homeowners have rented to medical students before and know the drill. You can also get a better deal from dealing with people like this rather than just a realtor or commercial renter.

Thanks so much for the information. I think the furthest I'm looking from the school is 10 miles, which would put me next to the highway.

I feel like having a family complicates my living arrangements. Cannot have roommates, or live in dorms, so will have to spend tons of money on rent. I hope to find something under 2k...

So it was strange to me that almost the entire interview day (or mine at least) was centered around the DPC despite the fact that only 10% of the class can actually take part in that. I get that they're proud of the program but ...
I guess that kind of track isn't really for me anyway.
But anyone want to shed light on this? Is the percentage of kids in the DPC going to increase dramatically? Couldn't get an answer for that during my interview.

Also, I feel like because they talked about that so much they didn't touch on a number of practical issues such as where students live, in what types of apartments/houses, how much rents cost, etc. I'm sure it's on this thread somewhere so no need to answer. Just figured I'd vent a bit.

Still a great place for sure. And pretty awesome that they let you know so quickly.

Hey guys, hope all is well! First year here, if you guys have any questions, shoot. Wish you all the best.

Thank you Sabrina! Still waiting for ii, I haven't seen many people posting those here this year so not sure what's going on. Congratulations on your first year!

NYCOM is a little slow in beginning the application process. But hang in there, one will pop up soon :xf:

Anyone from the Jan 9th-10th interviews get a packet or hear anything back yet about acceptance, etc?
