Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got another waitlist reminder this morning. Thanks for rubbing salt in the wound Nova.

Within the body of the WL email, one of the dates read August 2013. The second email changed that date to August 2014.

I interviewed here recently and they talked about this also, but said that the research fellowship is very competitive. There are only 6 spots and they had 21 applicants recently.

The tuition for the 3rd and 4th year would also be waived if you do the OPP fellowship, which only has 2 spots per year. I don't know how competitive this program is.

No you have that backwards. 6 spots for OPP and 2 for research.

I was told during my interview that they do have lots of research. I was told that after your first two years, you could take a gap year to do research and that the year of research and OMS year 3 and 4 tuition would NOT have to be paid by you, so I guess they would gave you a scholarship. Please tell me this is the truth.

The last I heard this was the case and by that I mean when I interviewed last year. They are building a research facility they've brought this up a few times to us (OM1s) this year already but I honestly any tell you the status on it. We also have a research club which brings presenters in, allows you to present your own research and gives you the contacts of people currently conducting research that you can talk to if you'd like to be involved. If you are into research there are opportunities here for you to do that it just takes some effort.

Yeah those "scholarships" are for the fellowships: 6 spots for OPP and 2 for Research. If you're selected to be a fellow, your M3 and M4 years are paid for as long as you fulfill your duties. I believe there is also a perk for rotation selection. It's an awesome deal.

I wonder if she knows the system has been sending out repeat emails or if it was done intentionally.

This is the same thing I have been thinking, there doesn't seem to be any numbers trend with those who have been accepted vs. those waitlisted. I have a hunch they are looking for something in particular. For instance, I was accepted and I have a few things in my background that make me a little different than a lot of applicants (I lived in foreign countries for a total of 4 years, military service, fluent in a second language, etc.).

I have a buddy who was also accepted and he has lived in a foreign country for 2 years and also speaks a second language. It's just an idea, but maybe they are looking for some kind of diverse/unique experience in your background. I know another accepted applicant has owned their own business. Another one on this thread that was accepted (I won't name him/her) worked in engineering designing medical prosthetics and actually ran into a member of the faculty on the interview day that was using one of her/his companies products.

So yeah maybe they are just looking for applicants of a particular background right now, that seems to be the most plausible explanation for all of these waitlists. After doing a few interviews, I can definitely see that each school looks for something a little different beyond just the numbers. So I bet all of those waitlists are going to be acceptances somewhere, just maybe not Nova at this time. Good luck to everyone and keep at it!

Got my official "alternate status" letter from Nova today.

Here's to WL movement throughout the year! Best of luck everyone.

FAQ says it runs march-august.

But agreed, hope something pulls through

BREAKING NEWS: Nova/NSU-COM might be getting an on-campus hospital. HCA East Florida just filed a Certificate of Need to gain approval to start building.

So who wants to estimate how many seats they've filled so far?

No kidding? Wow that would be pretty great. Any idea on a timeline? If they are still seeking approval the next step would be all of the building permits and everything, then actual construction. I imagine that would take at least 2-3 years depending on how fast things get done in Florida.

Here's the reply I received from Anastasia as to why I was waitlisted:

I've indicated some of the things that the committee of admissions reviews when they are considering accepting an applicant, it is in no particular order. These are the components considered when a decision is placed on your file.

1. Community service and volunteer work- the amount of hours is not as relevant as what you do. They like to see that you have medical experience such has shadowing a doctor or volunteering in a hospital. If you have other information that is fine...they like to see how involved you are in the community.

2. Science courses and grades-what you took and how well you did in the course.

3. Letters of recommendation-make sure that the letters are strong and signed or on letterhead (they will not be considered if they are not).

4. MCAT score-a competitive score is a 29. The committee is not mainly focusing on this information but it can become a deciding factor when choosing your application over other applicants for an interview. They typically like to see higher than a 6 in each category.

4. The minimum GPA requirements are to have at least a 3.0 in your science as well as your cumulative GPA. The competitive GPA's start at 3.4 for science, non science and cumulative.

5. Your interview

FYI

· Please remember that your application was reviewed with other applicants at the time of your interview.

· The committee selecting you as an alternate only means that they decided to go with other candidates at the moment but would eventually like for you to matriculate into the program.

Sincerely,

Anastasia P. Leveille

Not to get too picky here, and granted I'm not experienced in admissions but shouldn't we be evaluated overall with the thought, "are we right for NOVA"? Not "are we the best 4-5 people out of this very specific, highly competitive group of 30?". Seems backwards to me but then again I'm a bitter waitlistee...

If SDN is representative of the reality, then I would say less than 20 people have been accepted. Of those, however, about half will end up attending the school, since many have interest in other schools or even MD programs.

Call me an optimist, but everyone here will be accepted, eventually. The question is "When?". Is it going to be within the next few weeks or days before the Fall semester starts?

I think we underestimated the cockiness of nova this cycle :-/

29 is competitive? Lol. 28 is competitive for some MD programs in Florida. It's a bit laughable...

Perhaps NSU received a crazy amount of applications this year, versus last year.

EDIT: It would be interesting to review threads from the last couple years and figure out what % of applicants whom were accepted early (first 3 interview groups) and actually matriculated. Perhaps this % is relatively low and as a result, NSU is trying a new admissions approach?

Who knows, maybe future interview dates will have a few waitlists and many rejections?

Everything just would have been so much easier to be fortunate with an acceptance from Nova. Anyway as far as I am concerned, this just means more secondaries to fill out.

I knew it was going to be difficult to get into any school.. but from all the talk I heard about how getting the interview was the hardest part and most people got accepted after the interview, I was really looking forward to going here.. But Nova crushed me with that wait list.

And I already have an acceptance so I'm not sure how I'd have handled it otherwise.

For FL residents yeah, but NSU has no preference. OOS has as much chance as IS.

are you kidding? I remember someone on here with 3.8/29 that applied to all the florida schools. Only got 1 interview (FSU). It has almost gotten to the point where you shouldn't even bother applying MD with less than 30.

Was your friend FL resident? I've had multiple friends with lesser stats get into multiple FL schools (but had a lot more to show for it than grades).

How can you tell if you're complete here? Any idea how long between being complete and receiving an ii?

Thanks!

I cannot recall why I didn't apply here back when I was submitting my primaries and now I'm regretting it after researching the school more.

Do you think there's a good shot for me adding them this late in the game? I have a 3.4-something GPA (with a 3.99 GPA throughout my last 86 semester hours) and 34 MCAT (12/11/11), plus close to 2000 clinical hours.

I would definitely go for it.

Nice username btw.

I'm surprised with all the WL decisions this early in the cycle. NSU must be looking for something specific. Just hang in there guys. Easier said than done, I know.

It was just a general email about the grad programs NSU offers.

I also got the open house email. It is a common open house to look at what they have to offer in the way of advanced graduate degrees. Meet FA and admissions counselors, tour the campus and meet students. Seems like a bulk email.

Hey guys....so just had my interview today. Unfortunately, I was one of the unlucky people that had the tough interviewers, whereas everyone else had a very friendly and relaxed interview. Right off the bat the interviewers were very indifferent and did not have a positive attitude. They also reacted surprised when I gave them a firm handshake and they did not reciprocate. Out of the two interviewers, one of them asked majority of the questions while the other one just sat there very expressionless. Overall questions were not like the personal ones posted here but rather more regarding the future of the medical field and what my take is on the fact that physician salaries are to drop in half.

Other than that the whole campus was fantastic and the current M1 students were amazing and really informative. I found the simulated lab to be really helpful and a great way to practice for rotations. The dean has a great sense of humor and I can attest his mustache is epic.

Also Anastasia is aware of the SDN forums and the responses being posted here. Apparently they are changing the process up this year and holding off on acceptances till later so they get an opportunity to interview people well into May instead of March. Your chances of being pulled of the WL really depends on the admission committee being generous and deciding to give you a second look. However, this could take weeks to months and potentially all the way to next August. So at the end of the day I think Nova will lose many qualified students as a result of this change. I personally find it ridiculous they would invite this many qualified applicants to interview only to put them on the WL and hope that they are willing to stick around for who knows how long. They should stick to their rolling admissions cycle and not wait to grant acceptances.

Anyone who was accepted receive the official letter in the mail yet?

Nova is clearly changing the way they do things, and nobody really knows what that means. Not even those of us that are current students. All medical schools, even DO schools, are picky to a certain degree. You all got interviews because the school liked your applications.
Nova gave out a lot of acceptances early in the cycle in the past, and last year that meant that there was no wait list movement. I heard of only one person that got in off the wait list. This year they may be planning to accept fewer early in the year, keep the wait list pool smaller, and start pulling off the wait list earlier in the cycle. I know some of you will say they wait listed too many this past week to keep the wait list pool small, but we don't know if that pattern will hold.
Also, for those that think Nova will lose quality applicants because of this, think of it the way Nova does. The number of apps they get keeps getting larger, the quality of students keeps getting better, and they know they won't have a problem getting someone just as qualified to fill a seat left open by someone that won't attend because they got wait listed. I've seen some say that Nova is cockier this year, or that Nova is now the swan that gets to be picky. Unfortunately, I think it's true.
Sure, I'm a bit biased because I'm a student here. But I think it's a great school. Once I got accepted here last year, I didn't bother with apps anywhere else. People want to come here. I know others here that preferred this school over lower tier MD and other top DO schools.
I really hope you all get pulled off the wait list, and wish you the best of luck with all your applications.

i just went through last years thread for around this time... i'm so jealous that barely none of them were waitlisted 🙁

i'm still so sad and keep neurotically checking my email hoping it was a mistake.

I had them too, bummer.

I got a call from Nova on Sept. 9 saying I was complete and was ready to be reviewed. It's now 2.5 weeks later. How long have others waited before being offered an interview?

And if someone is NOT offered an interview, do they send you an email saying you've been waitlisted/rejected or is there just silence?

😕
