Received a second WL email...
Got another waitlist reminder this morning. Thanks for rubbing salt in the wound Nova.
I interviewed here recently and they talked about this also, but said that the research fellowship is very competitive. There are only 6 spots and they had 21 applicants recently.
The tuition for the 3rd and 4th year would also be waived if you do the OPP fellowship, which only has 2 spots per year. I don't know how competitive this program is.
I was told during my interview that they do have lots of research. I was told that after your first two years, you could take a gap year to do research and that the year of research and OMS year 3 and 4 tuition would NOT have to be paid by you, so I guess they would gave you a scholarship. Please tell me this is the truth.
The last I heard this was the case and by that I mean when I interviewed last year. They are building a research facility they've brought this up a few times to us (OM1s) this year already but I honestly any tell you the status on it. We also have a research club which brings presenters in, allows you to present your own research and gives you the contacts of people currently conducting research that you can talk to if you'd like to be involved. If you are into research there are opportunities here for you to do that it just takes some effort.
This is the same thing I have been thinking, there doesn't seem to be any numbers trend with those who have been accepted vs. those waitlisted. I have a hunch they are looking for something in particular. For instance, I was accepted and I have a few things in my background that make me a little different than a lot of applicants (I lived in foreign countries for a total of 4 years, military service, fluent in a second language, etc.).
I have a buddy who was also accepted and he has lived in a foreign country for 2 years and also speaks a second language. It's just an idea, but maybe they are looking for some kind of diverse/unique experience in your background. I know another accepted applicant has owned their own business. Another one on this thread that was accepted (I won't name him/her) worked in engineering designing medical prosthetics and actually ran into a member of the faculty on the interview day that was using one of her/his companies products.
So yeah maybe they are just looking for applicants of a particular background right now, that seems to be the most plausible explanation for all of these waitlists. After doing a few interviews, I can definitely see that each school looks for something a little different beyond just the numbers. So I bet all of those waitlists are going to be acceptances somewhere, just maybe not Nova at this time. Good luck to everyone and keep at it!
Got my official "alternate status" letter from Nova today.
Here's to WL movement throughout the year! Best of luck everyone.
so who wants to estimate how many seats they've filled so far?
BREAKING NEWS: Nova/NSU-COM might be getting an on-campus hospital. HCA East Florida just filed a Certificate of Need to gain approval to start building.
Very interesting. Here's the reply I received from Anastasia as to why I was waitlisted:
Ive indicated some of the things that the committee of admissions reviews when they are considering accepting an applicant, it is in no particular order. These are the components considered when a decision is placed on your file.
1. Community service and volunteer work- the amount of hours is not as relevant as what you do. They like to see that you have medical experience such has shadowing a doctor or volunteering in a hospital. If you have other information that is fine...they like to see how involved you are in the community.
2. Science courses and grades-what you took and how well you did in the course.
3. Letters of recommendation-make sure that the letters are strong and signed or on letterhead (they will not be considered if they are not).
4. MCAT score-a competitive score is a 29. The committee is not mainly focusing on this information but it can become a deciding factor when choosing your application over other applicants for an interview. They typically like to see higher than a 6 in each category.
4. The minimum GPA requirements are to have at least a 3.0 in your science as well as your cumulative GPA. The competitive GPAs start at 3.4 for science, non science and cumulative.
5. Your interview
FYI
· Please remember that your application was reviewed with other applicants at the time of your interview.
· The committee selecting you as an alternate only means that they decided to go with other candidates at the moment but would eventually like for you to matriculate into the program.
Sincerely,
Anastasia P. Leveille
Very interesting.
I agree, I stopped at that part as well, and sorta had hope... but then again, once they do become "interested" in matriculating one of us, its through a lottery pick:/Very interesting.

If SDN is representative of the reality, then I would say less than 20 people have been accepted. Of those, however, about half will end up attending the school, since many have interest in other schools or even MD programs.
Call me an optimist, but everyone here will be accepted, eventually. The question is "When?". Is it going to be within the next few weeks or days before the Fall semester starts?
I think we underestimated the cockiness of nova this cycle :-/
29 is competitive? Lol. 28 is competitive for some MD programs in Florida. It's a bit laughable...

user3 said:are you kidding? I remember someone on here with 3.8/29 that applied to all the florida schools. Only got 1 interview (FSU). It has almost gotten to the point where you shouldn't even bother applying MD with less than 30.
How can you tell if you're complete here? Any idea how long between being complete and receiving an ii?
Thanks!
I cannot recall why I didn't apply here back when I was submitting my primaries and now I'm regretting it after researching the school more.
Do you think there's a good shot for me adding them this late in the game? I have a 3.4-something GPA (with a 3.99 GPA throughout my last 86 semester hours) and 34 MCAT (12/11/11), plus close to 2000 clinical hours.
Anyone know what day ADCOM meets?
just got an "open house" email...
Anyone who was accepted receive the official letter in the mail yet?
Hey guys....so just had my interview today. Unfortunately, I was one of the unlucky people that had the tough interviewers, whereas everyone else had a very friendly and relaxed interview. Right off the bat the interviewers were very indifferent and did not have a positive attitude. They also reacted surprised when I gave them a firm handshake and they did not reciprocate. Out of the two interviewers, one of them asked majority of the questions while the other one just sat there very expressionless. Overall questions were not like the personal ones posted here but rather more regarding the future of the medical field and what my take is on the fact that physician salaries are to drop in half.
Other than that the whole campus was fantastic and the current M1 students were amazing and really informative. I found the simulated lab to be really helpful and a great way to practice for rotations. The dean has a great sense of humor and I can attest his mustache is epic.
Also Anastasia is aware of the SDN forums and the responses being posted here. Apparently they are changing the process up this year and holding off on acceptances till later so they get an opportunity to interview people well into May instead of March. Your chances of being pulled of the WL really depends on the admission committee being generous and deciding to give you a second look. However, this could take weeks to months and potentially all the way to next August. So at the end of the day I think Nova will lose many qualified students as a result of this change. I personally find it ridiculous they would invite this many qualified applicants to interview only to put them on the WL and hope that they are willing to stick around for who knows how long. They should stick to their rolling admissions cycle and not wait to grant acceptances.
