NYITCOM-Arkansas

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an email from NYIT telling me I could email them if I had applied to NY and request they consider my materials for the Arkansas campus. I'm already good with my choice/acceptance, but it could be a good deal for others. First class is supposed to be small. Best of luck!

Dear underdogs or anyone who is paranoid about their chances-- try applying to the new NYIT branch in Arkansas, which apparently has just opened on AACOMAS.

Well its better than the carribean...

How does this work? I got the email too, but I didn't apply to NYIT, so not even a secondary. Do I have to apply to NYIT on AACOMAS, because I don't see anything specific for Arkansas there. Will they have the same requirements as NYIT?

From the way I understand it you can send materials on AACOMAS to NYIT and then email them to let them know you are interested in AR. I'd guess that those already in the NYIT system would have a much greater chance at getting an II.

Were you accepted to NYIT NY? I interviewed there and never received that email.

I didn't even apply there, as I didn't really want NY.

I figured it went to everyone completing an AACOMAS application this year but then guess not. Not sure if a school can look at applicant data for people who didn't apply. *shrugs* You could email them and express interest, someone posted the email addr above.

Is DO school having some kind of race with law school? COCA is devaluing the degree....

Eh not really(at least not yet). As it stands there are still 6000 or so residency spots filled by IMGs. So really there is a shortage of US grads relative to the residency spots available. And its the amount of residency spots that determines how many fully trained doctors there are. So all this really does is replace one group of residents(IMGs) with others(US DOs), but doesnt change the total number of residents.

115 students? Holy cow, thats a lot for a new school in the middle of the cycle.

I hope it's an accident. There is no way they are going to recruit quality applicants this late in the year.

It is deff a real thing.

This is good for students. Bad for the profession as a whole, but good for me.

My thoughts on yet another new DO school:
iWKad22.jpg

they can make 8-10 new MD And DO schools and it still wouldn't be enough. Huge gaps right now in pure numbers and distribution. As long as they are accredited all is fine.

There are not many quality rotation sites in the US that are not utilized already for medical education, and there are plenty of terrible acgme accredited residencies.

It won't load for me, but is this the Fort Smith campus? I hope not...

Edit: Nope, Jonesboro..

So I was doing some reading on their fact sheet and came across some interesting facts.

-"Faculty and staff hiring for the Jonesboro location is underway, with 80 new positions in faculty, staff, and administration expected within the next two years."
-"Recruitment is expected to BEGIN in December 2015"
-"A-State began renovations to Wilson Hall in June 2015 to NYITCOM's specifications, including the construction of teaching labs, an auditorium, a simulation lab, and classrooms outfitted with technology for in-person and two-way live streaming of lectures."

Meaning tele-education from NY. I don't know why this is allowed. I understand VCOM does this too.
I didn't want to jump to conclusions, but that is sure how it sounds. I am NOT a fan at all of this kind of lecturing. But, then again that is just me and I know how I learn best.

WesternU-Lebanon also does tele-com lectures from the Pomona campus. I wouldn't be too pleased.

You know, more power to these new medical school, but I just hope they are following strict protocols and guidelines for setting up a good and worthwhile medical school that will educate smart and determined physicians. I don't want the osteopathic society to face harsh criticism due to lack of oversight as a direct effect of rapid expansion..I am not saying that we are "rapidly expanding," but it seems like that may be where we are headed in the near future. Just keep the schools unique, true to the educational standards, and dedicated to administering the best patient/personal care.

I have a theory that these medical schools specifically DO are growing in a rapid rate in order to decrease the stigma between their md coworkers. Currently 1/4 medical students are rising DOs. There fore over the next 20-25 years their will be somewhere between 30-50 percent of medical students are DOs. Especially after the merger this could lead to something similar to dentistry. Overall the biggest hit is foreign graduates. I believe the merger will help dos greatly.

Long term. You're right. It'll take a LONG time to meet MD numbers. However, in practice, if you've done an ACGME residency, we are not viewed any differently than MDs are.

You should do a bit a lot more research.

Had the same theory. The only difference is that I thought it was to make people more aware of the existence of DOs.

Is the tuition going to be the same as NYIT-NY? If so, that is steep for Arkansas living.

Eeek, no. Arkansas is 49 out of 51 States (Including D.C.) for primary care physicians. They are also one of the most rural dominant states in the U.S. and one of the poorest states in the nation. Arkansas only has ONE medical school, now it has TWO, and next year it will have THREE when the next DO school opens in Fort Smith. There is legitimacy for this campus.

There is legitimacy currently. However, there will be AR-COM and even KCU-Joplin (they have sites in AR). You really don't need that many DO schools around the area.

You forgot my home citie's, Oklahoma State Osteopathic med. school just two hours west, lol.

From my understanding they stream both ways now. Some from Pomona, some from Lebanon

Possibly, but a two way stream could also imply that it gives students a chance to be involved with the lectures as well. That is what I take out of this "2-way" streaming, at least this is what I feel makes the most sense.

Yes they also have a live mic from the "watching" campus, so if anyone has a question you can go to the mic and ask the other campus

I prefer being able to visit the professor during office hours if I have a question and tele-education doesn't allow for that.

Has anybody heard anything about tuition for this location?

you apply to NYIT through AACOMAS and do the secondary app. Then you email [email protected] and tell them that you want to be considered for the Arkansas application.

Edit: there is no separate application for Arkansas or separate fee.
I would really like to know more about the school before I shell out more money, although $50 is chump change at this point. There isn't much information about the school yet. I am kind of surprised they did not email me back today with more information for me.
