Given the changes coming to milmed, my preferences might change. I mostly didn't apply out of laziness and location. I love TX, but we have no family there. If I go to a civilian school, it needs to be near family.

yeah that change is concerning. i was looking to go into surgery and curious how matching will be affected it by it now if i decide to go the military med route

I'm not sure if it's due to the POM20, but the number of slots for incumbent interns went way down for surg and surg subs this year. But that's also only one year and could simply be a product of the cyclical nature of when they need to train people up. They also had a few spots in specialties that haven't had any spots for years (and specialties that are in no way operational--e.g., rad onc), so at least part of it is because of the cyclical nature of it, I think.

I'm going to speak to some people IRL rather than just rely on the internet forum. But I while I really enjoy taking care of active duty Sailors and want to continue doing that, I also want to take care of sick people.

Proximity to family definitely makes a difference for some of us nontrads. It is one of factors making my decision more difficult. Three of the schools I'm holding acceptances at have family nearby, but the fourth, which is my top choice, doesn't.

USUHS isn’t super close to family, but the salary means it doesn’t have to be.

It certainly is. There are other reasons why it’s at the top of my list right now, but that’s a huge reason.
I have a friend who’s doing MD/PhD there. She spent some time doing trauma training on top of a mountain somewhere. Pretty uhhhh unique education that’s for sure!

Yeah there are several cool educational opportunities unique to mil med that you don’t get anywhere else. I don’t want to miss out on them.

Anyone else supposed to hear back from some places in December? I had a few schools mention mid December so it's gonna be an exciting week leading up to the holidays.

I have an interview at ETSU on Tuesday, and they release decisions the week of their committee meetings, which happen once a month. I missed November's, so I'll be expecting to hear in December.

Nice, hope you hear good news! My top choice responds in December so only about 3 weeks to go. I'll be busy with finals anyways so it shouldn't be too hard of a wait.

We have to wait for the match in February in Tx, though I'm holding a prematch to school that is either my 1st or 2nd pick. Honestly it would probably be my first pick if I had prematched to both my #1 and #2 schools but somehow not prematching to the other makes me want to rank that school higher.

Forbidden fruit fallacy. Don’t let it sway you.

Make the decision as if you would match at both if they were ur number 1.

Yeah, I understand making the rational decision is the way to go, it all boils down to appropriately assigning values to the pros and cons of each. Either choice will be excellent, but I'm also playing devil's advocate that I might be making a choice based on ensuring I won't be let down on match day ranking the prematch #1. The match system is like homecoming all over again, lol.

Never went lol.

w/ my free time in my gap year I'm going to make an app called "the Match" for med students to date eachother based on not age, gender, location, or even sexual preference, but Step 1 + Clinical Grades + Bench or Squat

Squat/Deadlift or Wilks score preferred

Thought my cycle was pretty much over with regards to attending interviews but then woke up to an interview at my top choice IS school. Grateful to have so many interviews and options this year, especially as a re-applicant, but I feel like I will be more conflicted than ever come spring.

Not just yet. It’s nice to have options. But if you’ve already gotten into a few of your top choices I say go for it.

Yep, basically cancelled my remainder out of states only because I couldn't see myself going to them over my current acceptances (and especially if their post II acceptance rate was low). Saving a whole lot on traveling!

I've got one that I really don't see myself going to but it's a close drive, so I'm keeping it on the off chance i really like it or get a merit scholarship that I can use for leverage at other schools to ask for more money. Honest question though, yall think that is wrong ? Makes me feel dirty saying it

I cancelled an interview due to a family situation, then ended up going and that school became my top choice. You never know.

Med school is expensive and they don’t need to charge that much. Tuition has outpaced inflation for decades. If you can get some money thrown at you, go for it.

i can definitely relate. in my head i am thinking why did you not like me like this last year. but this cycle must feel like a 180 from last year for you
It definitely is a 180. I knew that I improved my app when I applied again, but I would have never predicted that I would have this much success this time around. Cheers to us re-applicants!

To echo this sentiment, I told myself that if I was accepted at School A, what I thought was my top choice, I would not attend the interview at School B two weeks later. I got waitlisted at School A so I went ahead and attended the interview at School B. Low and behold, I loved School B, probably even more than School A. So you really never know. If you definitely wouldn't take a certain school over your current acceptances for whatever solid reason (location, family, etc.), save your money. But if you're even slightly unsure, I would attend the interview.

Yeah, and in my case, I interviewed at A and B, and I was 10000% B or bust. Cancelled C even though I didn't really want to (seemed like a good school, but honestly I was pretty sure I wouldn't go there anyway--I had just heard great things about it and wanted to check it out). Never felt like that was the right move, and while still waiting to hear from A and B, I emailed C and told them that my family situation resolved (which is true) and that I really wanted to come interview. Meanwhile, I got an acceptance to B but went to C anyway since they went out of their way for me. Ended up absolutely loving C, the students, the faculty, the area, etc. Ended up making C my number one.

So I was pretty much 100% sure I wouldn't go there even if I loved it, but I was wrong. I should hear back in about two weeks, and if I get in, I'm definitely going.

I think at this point the only option I have left is to change my name, cut off all contact with everyone I know, and move to some jungle halfway around the world!

Bah. Less than 6 days until I should hear from ETSU if they accept me. I have finals tomorrow, Friday, and Tuesday, so that is helping the time pass, but yeesh.
Good luck on hearing back, man.

I interview at my #1 in a week and I already feel the nerves creeping up on me.

Thanks. I'm praying like crazy lol. I actually also just found out about another II I'll be getting. I called to ask if they got my LORs, and they told me they did and will be sending me an II within the week lol.

I know how you feel, my three top choices all respond this month and I'm equally excited and nervous

Yeah. I'm excited to hear because it felt like such a perfect fit, and the interviewers and associate dean all seemed like they wanted me to come, but I'm nervous because the committee obviously could tell me to pound sand. Do you know when you hear from them?

Yeah it's rough not knowing what to expect. One of them i felt like went great and im supposed to hear by the end of this week. A second one i felt like i did poorly on and its my number 1 choice and i should hear back next week so im nervous about that one 😕 and the third just told us December so I have no clue when that one will be. Based off previous years threads they seem to respond the week of Christmas though haha.

Well, keep us updated. I need this cycle to wrap up so I can go back to relaxing lol. It would be super nice to get a call next week so I can go into next semester and just chill lol. I only have 3 classes next semester. It'd be nice to be able to just start planning for the move, look for houses, etc.

Just be glad Y'all don't have to wait till February to know your fate as we do in TX.
Today I learned there's a drawback to being an applicant from Texas 😀😀

I just finished the last final exam I have to take for grad school, and I was hit with the realization of how much time I'll have on my hands next semester since I'll only be finishing up my thesis. No classes, no part-time job, no volunteering, nothing nothing nothing. Just working in the lab and writing my paper. All this free time is going to drive me insane waiting for next August to come!!

Sounds like you need a new hobby

Ended up getting waitlisted at one of my top 3 schools and rejected at another school (not one of my top ones so not terribly sad but still stings a little). Still waiting to hear the results from 2 more sometime this month so I'll still hold out a little hope for some good news 😀

Let us know if you hear back next week! Wishing the best for you!

Gah. Sorry for the bad news. Praying for some good news this month for both of us!
