Okay need advice. I got into my top choice, and it’s a civilian school. They require males to wear a suit for certain things, and I don’t have a suit. Do I need to go super fancy for this, or can I get something cheap? Any suggestions? Does the advice change now that it’s not an interview, or should I get something I can use to interview for residency if I decide to apply for a civilian deferment (and get it)? I haven’t worn a suit or even a tie for over 6 years.

I personally went on the cheap to medium pricey end. Initially i got a super cheap one but it was super uncomfortable and i decided id need it later on anyways so went back and got something a level up. Spent about $250 total for the entire suit (including shirts) plus a little more for some shoes and socks (my first one i had bought for 100 and it was terrible lol, returned it the next day). I had also not worn a suit in a long time. I got one of those ones that has flexible fabric and it's so much more comfortable especially in the pants/shoulder area. Definitely worth the extra cost. Also there's tons of sales. This would've normally cost around 400 but i waited for some crazy sales.

I plan on using this same suit for everything I need out for throughout medical school and hopefully for residency if it still fits then.

Also check out jc penny. I was able to get cheap shirts there because they had a bogo deal and apparently they have deals pretty frequent.

Go off the rack, but not bargain bin, and have it tailored. Cheaper than bespoke but it will fit better. Gray or Navy will serve you well for all occasions.

Finally, my time to shine. I struggled with this around ~6 months ago. I would definitely get something that is viable in the longer term. My suit for interviews has already paid off. On top of wearing it for interviews, I am now also getting to use it for my wedding! Excuse my language. Do you want to waste your money on a piece of ****? Probably not. If you get a decent suit, it will last you a decade minimum, longer if you take care of it. And, given that you usually wear suits for making first impressions, you do not want to just put 0 effort in. That can affect how you present yourself while wearing the suit in the future. If you don't put effort into getting a good suit, you'll probably be getting a new one and spending more money in the future. With that said, you don't need to spend a lot to get a quality suit. How much you want to spend will determine where you get your suit from.

<$200
Ok, so your budget isn't much to work with. That is fine. With a budget this small, though, you aren't going to get something retail. Hit up the thrift stores because you're not about to spend $50 on a t-shirt. That is just some ignorant---. Alright, so you see a suit. Next, the key to a good-looking suit is fit. That is most important. Does the suit fit? Out of a thrift store, it probably will not but that's ok. Find one that is close to size. Do not find one that is undersized. If you find one you like and it's a little big, that's perfect. You want more fabric to work with, not less. Try to ensure the length and shoulders of the suit fit; these are the most costly adjustments that a tailor can fix. Adjusting the shoulders can sometimes cost as much as the suit itself. Find a decent tailor. Whether you know one or you have to use reviews on the internet, make sure it's someone who knows what they're doing. When you visit them, say you want your suit fitted. They should ask you questions about how you want it to look. Hopefully, they will be placing pins in your suit (while you wear it) as you tell them how you want it to fit. I recommend especially taking your suit jacket and pants to tailors if you buy from thrift stores. The shirt you can get away with being loose-ish if it is under a jacket. The more fitted your suit, the more professional and put-together you look. If you plan on not wearing the jacket a lot, you may as well get the shirt tailored as well. It can only help in the future. Remember, even if cost is an issue, this is a long-term investment. This is not a t-shirt or pair of sweatpants that you will be getting rid of in the next five years. I cannot say too much about brands as the manufacturing year of suits means the quality of specific brands will vary. With that said, you generally want to see where a suit was made. Many thrift stores have custom-made suits from private tailors as well as brand-name suits. Honestly, it's a fantastic place if you vet what you buy. You can get $1000-$2000 suits at thrift stores for <$100. You should feel the material. You'll likely want a wool suit for a standard piece. The wool used in suits should not feel scratchy but smooth in a non-silky way. I would absolutely recommend staying away from polyester/rayon. These materials do not feel good, are cheap, and have a shine to them. Once you try on the suits of different materials, you will tell the difference. I got my first suit ever from a thrift store for $8. I spent less than $80 on tailoring. It is fitted and looks great. I still have it and use it on occasion. Since it is black, I opted to get a navy suit for my interview season. While I doubt this really mattered for interview season specifically, I wanted to have a navy suit for the future as well.

Note: private tailoring can take up to a month depending on how popular the tailor is.

If you know your measurements, these tailors on eBay.

JCP suits fall here. I personally like the thrift store option better as the quality and construction is much better if you find the right suit. If you do buy from JCP, just make sure that you know your measurements beforehand since the salesmen measure wrong. Again, the idea of wool > poly-blend is a good rule of thumb here.

Suitsupply.com. At this price, you will be looking at their blue line. Despite the name, the suits are varying colors. Expect to spend slightly upwards of $400 unless you fit their off-the-rack suits very well. I personally got my suit (Napoli Navy) from one of their physical stores and had it tailored by them (their in-store staff measure properly) on-site for $40. They tailored my suit within a day of purchase. The suits here are comparable in construction/quality to $800-$900 suits elsewhere. You honestly can't go wrong with Suitsupply.

Others may recommend Indochino. I have heard bad things about their QC on their suits with measurements being off, seams not properly sewn, etc. so I can only tell you that is why I have not recommended them at this price point.

>$500
You can find a decent suit at this price point just about anywhere as long as you know what you're doing. Do research and make sure you check the quality/construction. At this price-point, tailors are also a great option when considering buying a suit. They usually custom-make the suits specific to your measurements. You may have to shop around for tailors depending on your budget. Name-brand and designer suits are also available at this price point. Prepare to have the suit tailored, though, unless you get lucky with an off-the-rack item.

Wow! Thanks. That’s great.

Anyone have any netflix show recommendations?

It's winter break and besides working/going to the gym/hanging out with friends I got nothing to do (it's cold and miserable where im at so not much to do outdoors haha).

Amazon Prime: Man in the High Castle, Vikings

YouTube Premium: Cobra Kai, Origin

Even the best of us can gain weight over the course of many years.

I’ve been trying to gain weight for about a decade. The most I’ve ever put on was 30 lbs during boot camp. As soon as I stopped eating 6000 calories of MREs every day, I promptly lost 15 pounds and have stayed the same weight for almost 7 years lol.

Final Table on Netflix is like master chef but with accomplished chefs. Each dish looks so beautiful and drama-dree.

So I'm about to send an email to withdraw my application from the other school I have an interview at, and part of me just got terrified that my top choice accepted me by accident and that they're going to realize their mistake as soon as I withdraw lol.

I withdrew from two interviews and I could barely bring myself to hit send lol. Kept thinking what if... But in the end I knew there was no chance I'd attend them after getting a different acceptance so forced myself to do it.

Haha. I'm not worried about what if. I definitely wouldn't attend over my top choice. But that imposter syndrome hit me really hard. What if they realize they made a mistake or something lol.

Edit: I just did it. Feelsgoodman.

It's nice you already know where you're headed early so you can start prepping for the move and stuff whenever you want.

Yeah. There's not a ton of prep to be done. The government does pretty much everything in the move. Mostly we just have to arrange getting the place cleaned, finding a new place, and then notify the landlords that we will be breaking out lease a month early.

Hope everyone's enjoying their break for the holidays. Personally i just had the weirdest dream about a school that involved a sideways moving elevator, and old lady with a leg cast in a wheel chair, and some burglars.

The exact details are fuzzy but i think we were supposed to catch the burglars to gain an acceptance? 😀😛

Well sadly i woke up too soon to know the results

Got passed up on the first round of acceptances at all the schools i was supposed to hear back from over break but i realized despite what i tell myself I've been over doing it with how often I've been checking this site giving myself unnecessary stress. Gonna just be grateful for what i got already and wish the best to all of you. Gonna try and take a break from here for a bit (we'll see how long that lasts 😛)

Hey everyone-
I got my acceptance a week ago for my top school. I'm on my 2nd gap year and with 6 months-ish left, I don't know what I should do during this time!! Any suggestions?

Well, depends on how much you need money versus how much you want to just enjoy the next six months, as it will probably be your last real free summer.

Personally, I will have about a month and a half between the end of grad school and the beginning of M1. I’m planning on going to London for two weeks to see family. Travel is always nice.

But definitely make sure you take some of that time to get **** in order. Go to the dentist. Get a check up. Make sure your mental health is good to go. Make sure your insurance (health, life, home, auto, pp) is good to go. Etc.

Congrats!! I’m in my first gap year (or 1.5yrs). I’m personally still working to save up some money for a trip and a rainy day fund. I’m hoping to quit by May and take a trip then/June and also finding time to catch up with friends. And then just use July to prep for move-in!

I'm working until 1-2 months prior to orientation. Mainly working then so I can save up funds so I don't have to work prior to school starts. Do what you feel will be best for you. For me, I know I will be moving either OOS or to a far corner of my state. I'm taking the 1-2 months to get my things moved and in order (i.e. knowing the area, settling in to a new place with my wife). I have always planned to travel a little bit before I began med school. I had the stars align to do my traveling while I worked using vacation time.

Same. Life is all about working working working, and extra hours working, now until May.

I really would love to just Relax and spoil myself a bit but I honestly feel really guilty for not doing something “productive.” I am worried that since I have been out of school for 1.5 years now I wont be able to adjust easily to the med school craze once it starts! So that’s why I’m not sure if I should keep myself busy with work to “stay in shape”(I hope it doesnt sound overly anxious haha).

Yeah I completely understand haha. I bought a book to learn medical Spanish so I’m hoping to use that to start getting myself in some kind of sit down and study mode.

Kinda random, but if you’ve been accepted into a school and they are aware you are graduated and aren’t taking any classes or courses right now, does that mean all your credits and pre reqs are good to go? Or is that once you send a final transcript?

They will only be able to confirm upon receiving your official trans.

lmao theres a school I was accepted to that wants a copy of an (at-least) 8 pg paper I've written in a humanities course. I definitely did that, but tbh I have no idea where those files might be since I cleaned out my hard-drive after graduating.

Wtf? What do they want it for?

its to confirm one of their pre-reqs for writing intensive coursework in a non-science course. If I cant find it in the umpteen billion random flash drives I have in my desk, I'll just e-mail my prof to send them a confirmation that this was a requirement for a class I did, I'm sure that would be fine.

Lol would you attend this school over your other options? Might not even be worth the hassle if not

Unsure as of yet. I've withdrawn from everywhere I'm not still seriously considering so only hard decisions from here on out unless my top choice accepts me in March. Waiting to make any other big decisions until I have more information.

I'm in that same boat; I know that I did a massive project at the end of the course, im just not sure it hit that 8 page with the footnotes like they want it to be.

So my last semester is starting up and I am taking more credits than I actually need since there were a few classes I was interested in trying. I was thinking if I end up not liking them I would just withdraw and drop down to my minimum required credits. Do you guys think this would cause any issues with schools I'm accepted at if I have one or two withdrawals on my final semester?

You can ask your schools what their policy on withdrawals is, but I imagine they wouldn't care. My understanding is they just care that you complete your prerequisites, maintain a decent GPA (ie. >3.0), and graduate.

Make sure you drop instead of withdraw. Don’t want two Ws.

Dropping and withdrawing are the same thing at my school. They'll show up as W's on my transcript.

Only way to avoid a W is if i drop them within the first week during the forgiveness period. Not sure if I'll have enough time to get an idea of how the class will go in that short of a time though.

If there is a drop period where you don’t get a W they are different at your school, lol. Drop = no W. Withdrawal = W.

The choice is yours. Don’t know if it will look badly, you’ll have to check with the school you plan to attend. I wouldn’t risk it. Dont you also have to pay for it if you earn a W? I say either drop on time or finish the classes.

Just clarify with your schools how two Ws would be received. Future courses aren't binding, and I really doubt they'd care. But it always is nice to be safe. Personally, I would just try to drop it within the add/drop period if you can. But you should be okay either way.

Nope, dont pay by credit hours at my school, its one cost. But ok sounds good, once i get the syllabus and an idea for how the professor is I'll just decide based on that. (and yes ive used ratemyprofessor but need to see in person).

I actually didn't even have them listed as future courses, just not sure how it would look to have one or two W's. Unfortunately I won't know where im going for sure until closer to april since im still waiting on quite a few decisions. I'll just play it safe. I guess I can always just audit the class if I want.
