Oklahoma State (OSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got a voicemail this morning from Dr Stewart asking me to return her call. Started freaking out and didn't think it was good news, but she offered me an acceptance when I called back!! So if you get a 918-561-xxxx call answer it! She said they are mailing out official letters today and they will arrive on Friday. I think she said by UPS, not US mail... But I wasn't quit listening at that point.

Maybe I missed it on interview day, but I wasn't expecting a call... I've been waiting for a letter, which is why I wasn't expecting good news.

I interviewed on Friday 10-26.

Accepted, Class of 2017!!

Would you mind giving us an idea of what questions they asked? i know they will ask " tell us about yourself". Last year they asked me about healthcare reform and what I thought a doctors role was as a leader in the community.

My interview actually started out a little awkward, my first question was is this your first interview... I didn't know if they meant at OSU (like if I was a re-applicant since they only see the essay parts of your app, not your stats) or at any school this year. I had already interviewed at KCUMB and OU, but never at OSU (not a re-applicant) so I told the truth and said 'well this is my first interview here but have interviewed at other schools.' I thought it was a really weird way to start... Then it seemed to get worse, they asked me where the interviews were, how they went, have i been accepted yet, what I thought of the schools and how I would decide on a school since it came up that I was already accepted to KCUMB. So a large chunk if the interview was about other schools and I left feeling like it went really bad and I didn't get a chance to talk about my interest in OSU much. They never asked me 'why OSU' 'why medicine' or specifically 'why osteopathic medicine', none of the 'tell me about yourself.'

It was definitely my weirdest interview, but it wasn't uncomfortable. I had no ethics or current events questions. Just questions about my other interviews and picking a school, what field I had an interest in, how I deal with stress, if my job was stressful (I work in hospital administration now).

If you aren't in the first interview session definitely ask what kind of questions the people who have your same interviewers got before you, I heard the repeat a lot of their standard questions to each student during the day, but obviously the conversation can digress to more personal questions strait from your application that aren't going to be asked to other people.

The admissions staff will tell you that since the interviewers don't see your grades/MCAT you have to bring up any type of explanations for bad scores or grades if you want them to know what happened. Obviously they won't ask if they can't see them until after the interview is over. If you need to do that plan how your going to address it ahead of time because it doesn't really come up and when you're caught up in the interview you will forget, I did anyway.

Really just try to relax and if you need to take a second to formulate an answer, do that rather than giving a quick answer that you may regret or didn't think through... But it's mostly personal questions anyway so it's not like you're looking for the correct answer, your just looking for YOUR answer.

Interview day went really well. The interviewers actually started my interview off by introducing themselves to me then ask me to tell them a little about my self. They definitely had a list of questions they wanted to ask me but as the previous post said, if you can find the people that have the same interviewers as you and you are not the first one up, you can count on being ask the same questions. I was the last one to interview with my panel and all of us were asked the same questions in one form or another. I was asked why OSU, why DO, why physician, and two ethical type questions that they presented to me in a case scenario and I had to respond with what I would do in that particular situation. The rest of the time I was just talking about my experiences and my application. Overall the interview was very laid back and if you are 100% truly honest with your application and your answers, you will not have any problem. Good luck to you guys interviewing next week.

Hey chadk, I noticed you were talking about questions that they asked last year...do you know why you weren't accepted? If this is too personal, feel free to disregard.

I received an email on Monday saying my file was complete, and then got a call the next day for an interview next Thursday 11-15! Seems pretty quick, I’m nervous. Will anyone else be there on that day?

No, I don't mind. I have been a practicing chiropractor for 15 years and a couple of years ago I decided to go back to school. A chiropractor has what is termed a limited license, I feel I can help more people by getting an unlimited license. I had not taking any upper level sciences in a long time and at the time of myapplication last year and interview I had only completed one current class. they wanted to see me take more classes. I was waitlisted and my spring 2012 transcript did not get to the school until a week after the final wait list cut off date. They told me they liked everything else about my app. so I hope this year with taking all the extra coursework I will have a better chance.

I have created a class of 2017 Facebook page. I believe if you search you can find it. It just went up last night. I figured it would be a good place to meet our classmates and get to know one another before we matriculated. If interested just like the page. Eventually we will keep it updated, post pics, and just meet and greet. Thanks. I know we are all excited. CONGRATS!!!

I was marked complete Monday too, but no call yet, good luck! Stats?

Thank you, my stats are actually not that great, faily average MCAT and a 3.6 science GPA. I think my clinical experience and LORs are the reason I got an interview. Also, I was just accepted for the Forensic Patholgy masters program at OSU-CHS and I've been talking to them about doing both together. Hopefully that's not too crazy?

That's unfortunate that happened to you with the transcripts. Seems like you'll have no problem this year though!

27 MCAT 3.9 GPA 3.9 science GPA. I also had quite a bit of shadowing hours and I've been working in a hospital since May.

Does anyone know where we're supposed to meet up on interview day? Also, can we just park anywhere?

You can park in either parking lot and someone will be at either entrance to escort you to the interview area.

The future doesn't look so bright for me since we interviewed on the same day haha...congrats though!

What are your feelings about the new curriculum being implemented next year? At the interview a lot of the current students were talking about how great it was to have the OSU share site where previous students can share notes and such. One of my worries is being the first class to go through the new curriculum and having to work through the kinks and essentially being the guinea pig. Have you been happy with the quality of your rotation sites? What do you love most about OSU and what is something that you wish you could change? Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, very much appreciated!

What is the new curriculum that you are talking about? What will it consist of?

OSU is my top choice school so I am VERY interested in what new curriculum is going to be.

Got the call yesterday!!! I'm in!!!! Interviewed Nov 15th. Can't wait to start!

OSU is my top choice school so I am VERY interested in what new curriculum is going to be.

At the interview they just told us that starting next year they would be switching the curriculum to a systems based learning, because this is the method in which most medical schools are teaching. Most students I asked seemed unsure about it, but mostly because it is just "new and unknown". I'm sure OSU will still do a great job of educating their future students just as they have done, but it still makes me a little nervous to be the first one going through the change. I guess I was just hoping for some reassurance from a current student that it would all work out (which I'm sure it will).

I was actually wondering about how OSU teaches systems, because on their website, their curriculum does not mention systems in either 1st or 2nd year. I guess I'll found out more next week.

The curriculum on their website is the current curriculum. It will be changing.

Hello
I am trying to find match result from OSU, could anyone know where to find?
thanks!!

So does OSU notify you if you're waitlisted or do you just have to call and ask?

I interviewed on the same day and I haven't heard back yet. I doesn't seem like they accept the people they want all on the same day from the same interview day.

Well, hopefully tomorrow will be our lucky day

I asked my friend who got wait-listed last year (but got in a little bit after) and he said they will send a letter for wait-list. But they told us to go ahead and call in the afternoon so I would definitely do that.
