Pacific Northwest (PNWU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed on 10/12 and just received an acceptance call. Good luck!

Accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Interviewed on 10/12)

Interviewed 10/12, just checked the portal and saw that I was waitlisted. Congrats to everyone who received acceptances! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I still have a shot to get off the waitlist.

Are you guys able to offer any insight into why you were given the decisions that you got. Like if you got waitlisted do u think it was because you messed up on a question or fumbled up? Or if you got accepted, what made you stand out?

Thanks so muchh in advance! Trying to get a feel for what to expect...

I found something about an interview in my checklist, but no e-mail. So I called Hope and she confirmed I have an II! She said the e-mails were rolling out and should be in my inbox today.

But still no e-mail. I guess it's only 3pm over there lol

No idea why I was waitlisted. All of my interviews went really well. I can only assume it was because of my low mcat score (23). But I still got an II invite with that score... or it could have been the regional bias (I'm not from the Pacific northwest).
Also they wont know if they're able to increase their class size from 75 to 135 until January. They may be putting a lot of people on the waitlist to pull from if and when they get the approval to increase. They said they'll start pulling from the waitlist as soon as they know if they can increase.

Thanks for your input! Thats great to know about the wait list. I did not know that they were getting approval for this class. I wish you the best of luck!!

Does anyone else have a weird portal status? Mine says missing document, academic pre requisites... I didn't see it until today. Strange! I emailed helpdesk, I'll see what they say but just wanted to see if you guys had this too!!

I think if you are still working on any pre-reqs or haven't updated them with classes that you have finished recently you will see this. I have the same message on my because I finished my last o-chem class after my application was submitted. I was accepted a few days ago so it's not a big issue as far as I can tell.

I just submitted my secondary here. Better late than never, right? Hopefully I still have a shot :xf:

Congrats!! I got a form email back from Hope Ennis saying I'm complete, so I guess it didn't matter. Not really sure what they are missing.

Do anyone know how long after their primary application was verified and submitted it took PNWU to send out a secondary? What were the essay questions for the secondary? I want to get started on it.

I apologize in advance if anyone has already asked about this, but how long does it usually take for the secondary application to be marked as "complete" on the portal after it's been submitted? I just got my portal login yesterday and it shows mine as not being received, which makes me a little nervous.

I got the secondary a week after my primary application was verified. Here's the essay prompt:

Write a one page, total, essay addressing the following questions:
a. What personal qualities do you possess that will make you a successful osteopathic physician?
b. Which experiences and people have inspired you to become an osteopathic physician?
c. What inspired you to apply specifically to PNWU?

I got an e-mail that they received my secondary and even though my letters were still not marked as received, she said they had a lot to do... I waited a week of two, called Hope and she said mine was going to be uploaded that day and it was. You should get that same initial e-mail about receiving the secondary and then call Hope if you don't get a complete notification in a week or so. She's super nice!

Hmm I didn't get any email saying they received my secondary, but Hope told me that I wouldn't get a confirmation and that she'd just email me once my file was complete or if I was missing anything. I think I'll just wait a week like you said and then contact them again if my checklist hasn't been updated. Thanks!

I emailed about my file being incomplete, and Hope said it was because of an English requirement that I met with another class... And then my portal changed to interview 10/18. Does anyone else have this status? Have you gotten an email yet?

(I saw that others posted about a portal change without email.. thanks! Hopefully I'll get to meet some of you soon!)

I don't have that status. At least not yet, I hope!!😀 When my status changed in the portal to complete I also didn't receive an e-mail...so I'd say when someone has questions, call Hope 🙂

Got the interview email today!! Scheduled for Friday 🙂 hope to meet some of you there

I just cancelled my interview scheduled for Nov. 16th. Maybe you could give them a ring sometime tomorrow and snag it. Good luck buddy.

II today....dates were for 2013 too!

I guess that's all they have left? Either way, I'll take it!! For those who have already interviewed...did any stay with a student host?

Did you have to explain your mcat score during the MMI?

I live in the area, she might have sent the four spots for Friday to local people? There were only four and then it was feb/march. If it helps, my portal changed awhile ago but only got an email yesterday for the interview.

Ah okay, that's probably why you could make it on such short notice. I live driving distance too so hopefully more slots open up!😀 Either way, good luck on your interview this Friday and let us know how it goes!!

Speaking of which, if anyone wants to carpool from Seattle ill be leaving tomorrow afternoon. If you reply here ill check again tomorrow, I have a reliable car etc.

Was very nice to meet some of you at the interview today! Finally got to meet DermpathDoc during one of my MMIs 🙂 The staff at the University were great - most comfortable interview I've ever had.

GL to everyone for next Tuesday!!👍

Interview day was great! Fingers crossed for Thursday. I loved my interview group, and everyone else seemed nice too! My only tip for the MMI (probably most MMIs could use the same advice, definitely not trying to give anything away) is to expect some vague questions at a few stations - don't let it throw you off and ask questions about the prompt if you're confused. Best of luck!!

Did you have to explain your mcat score during the MMI?

Yes. There was one MMI station about you AACOMAS application. I explained the reason for my mcat score and such. (She didn't ask about it, I brought it up).

I just sent in my deposit yesterday! I am so excited to go to this school!! Does anyone know if a facebook group has been started?

I have a question for the mmi.. First interview so I'm a bit nervous! Does the interviewer talk back and respond to what you are saying or do thy just sit quietly while you talk about the topic? I've heard different things at different schools.. Congrats to those accepted!

Most of them talk back. It felt more like a conversation than just straight up answering a question. Don't stress about it too much, it is much more laid back than it sounds. I actually found it to be more enjoyable than a panel interview with people firing questions at you. Good luck.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using SDN Mobile

Got an II today!! but not till march 🙁 still pretty darn happy, being from Washington this would be awesome.

Hi! Thanks for the tip! Any other insight on the types of questions that will be asked? I know there'll be scenario questions (will they ALL be scenario)
and a station for "explain your app" but will there be any "Why DO" or "hobbies" questions?

Thanks!

Got an acceptance call today! Hope others from my interview day also got in, I liked everyone I met.

Don't stress too much about the interview- be yourself and just be logical. Read about the school, know your own app, read some ethics and healthcare news if you feel like it, but don't go crazy. Be nice to the other applicants, it will help you relax too. I totally messed up at least 2 stations and I still got in. Yay. I'm OOS, 32P, 3.3cum 3.0sci.

How likely is it that a student with no ties to the region can get into this school? Im from the deep south and want desperately to get out of this place! From the research I have done, I think I would like living in the northwest.

First post- I'm from the east coast and have an interview scheduled for Nov. I assume the school looks for more qualities in an applicant than just their geographical location. I am very excited as this is my first interview and the school/area seems beautiful. Congrats to all that got in hopefully will be joining you!!

I agree. Or at least I hope so! I'm from California and I have an interview on Friday so I'm hoping they look at more than just location.

There is some preference given to geo location (as you know) - but what's more important are if the school's mission to put more doc's in the PNW aligns with your own. If so - make sure to demonstrate/emphasize that. Where do you want to practice? What are your goals as a physician etc. and do they match the focus of the school. Do you want to be a part of a very small med school community - where you're not going to just 'blend in' - or do you want more of a tight knit student/faculty community where everyone knows everyone very well type experience? PNWU has put in to increase its class size next year - but even if approved - it will only increase to 100 students next year. This is a very small med student community. For me - this was very important. Def keep this in mind when deciding if the school is a good fit for you.

gl on your interviews!

^thanks for the advice. I agree that a smaller med school community is something that is very important to me, I will definitely make that aware during my interview. I'm not about the hype or flashing lights, just want a good environment to learn in and be able to form new relationships within a close knit community.

My application status shows Interview/ 10/9/12 under the Decision / Date category.
Does anyone else have something similar and still not yet received an email interview invite?

I think you should give Hope a call. Check on the 'checklist' tab too to see if there's an incomplete message there...and maybe your spam folder?

Before I had a chance to call Hope today I got an email with interview invite for March 29, 2013.

Considering I was complete 10/9/12, isn't it unusual that I have such a late interview?
Does this mean I don't have very high priority at this school?

No not necessarily! I know they were booking interviews far in advance a couple months ago.

If it's any consolation - of the 40 folks at my interview - I only know of 3 so far that have mentioned they got in from my interview date. It's all about who you are (what your goals are as a physician) and if PNWU is a good fit for you.

Some schools are pretty selective with specific criteria in addition to academics; it's my belief that PNWU is one of those schools. One of the smallest medical schools by enrollment number in the country - and still potentially have spots available near the end of the interview cycle.

This is my opinion though - dont have concrete statistics.

Gl - it's a great school!
