Any thoughts on these schools Southern Illinois University, Medical College of Wisconsin, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine? I am an Illinois resident with a desire to go into dermatology.

It seems like it would cost me about 20k more a year to go to either MCW and 40k more to go to Oakland before interest.

SIU and MCW have associated dermatology residencies.

In another thread you said SIU is $100k cheaper? No brainer!

I'm struggling with a decision similar to this. I was accepted to SIU and a couple other schools that supposedly have more prestige (and of course, a higher cost). The PBL curriculum is a big draw for me and everyone I know there loves it. But the facilities don't appear to be quite as nice/fancy as some other schools and I'm a little worried about the name recognition factor and living in Carbondale/Springfield. I know people say not to choose based on ranking but I think it is at least something that should be considered in your decision making.

SIU for sure. It's cheaper and MCW/OUWB aren't prestigious enough to justify the extra cost.

After further analysis less any exciting things that would happen after the whole financial aid process happens. It looks like...

SIU (Total Cost of Attendance) 4 Years - 221,445
MCW (Total Cost of Attendance) 4 Years - 241,687
Oakland (Total Cost of Attendance) 4 Years - 261,064

A twenty thousand dollar difference over 4 years, between SIU and MCW. Intense.

Yep I totally agree with you. I feel like name means something, even if it is not much. I def don't like the idea of sitting in lectures 9-5 Monday through Friday so PBL sounds nice in that aspect. I know SIU board averages for step 1 are a bit below average which frightens me too, but I realize that is an average and its dependent upon the student. I am an undergrad on the SIU campus in carbondale, our library is awesome but the med students are never here, they always spend time in the building next door which is lacking to a degree. I believe the redesigned the lecture hall in the med school building and I actually have a lecture in it this semester and it is very nice, but I think you would only be in there about 2-3 hrs a week and thats optional from what I understand. The rec center on the SIU carbondale campus is second to none, on the interview trail (I went to about 7 of the 12 invites I got) and I never found one with a decent gym... oh actually yea there was one... Mayo Medical School omg amazing gym, our rec kicks ass at SIU though. Second year, you get access to YMCA but I have only been to one of those once and I wasn't impressed. Full time PBL kinda freaks me out, I have sat through a session and I really enjoyed it, but to go all in on PBL is kinda scary. Now that I see from a financial standpoint there isnt a absolutely huge difference, it's going to make this decision harder. Everyone I have talked to that is M1 and my girlfriend who has had the opportunity to spend time with M2 and M3 students at SIU all say they love it.

Yep, unfortunately. The base tuition in state for 2012/2013 is $27,768.

FRESHMEN Student Budget 2012/2013 08/20/12 - 08/11/13
Tuition: $27,768 Fees: 3,511 Educational Resources: 1,555 Room & Board: 9,675 Transportation: 1,206 Personal Expenses: 3,344
TOTAL $47,059
TOTAL Total Budget for Year $52,783

I was hoping it was cheaper. For my figures above I used the Total cost of attendance for each year uniquely using the most recent figures on their website.

Interesting that SIU M2's have Summer tuition.

Yea that extra $18k of summer for M2s is what drives the tuition a lot higher than other state schools. Most schools have 10 month long M1 and M2, SIU lists the expenses for 12 month M1/M2. Technically you should drop off that $5k M1 summer "cost" when comparing because most other schools don't count the COL during non-school months.

I also just noted, that I would have to bump up MCWs total cost of attendance around 13k, because they hadn't included mandatory insurance. So what kinda gap are we talking about now?

Uhhh 20k+5k+13k I think? I'm not following too closely though. So almost a 40k difference :scared:

Even considering facilities when choosing a medical school seems very odd to me. Also, SIU's reputation in the medical world is very very different than a pre-med's point of view. I spent my summer at WashU and the physicians I worked with spoke very highly of our faculty and surgery programs. Fourth years tell me the reputation they have encountered on the interview trail (including Hopkins, NYU) is one of much respect for our curriculum and clinical skills. Going to a middle of the road private school (not to mention large class size) like MCW instead of SIU will do absolutely nothing more for your career. Now that I mention it, the smaller class size at SIU is a huge advantage for accessibility to physicians for research opportunities and connections.

Facilities? Really??? If it makes you feel any better, they just replaced all the carpeting.

SIU imo.
