Any thoughts? I'm a California native but it looks like Chapel Hill will be less expensive even with paying out of state tuition for the first year (I hear they consider you in state by 2nd year). San Diego - nice weather but a bit conservative. Chapel Hill - never lived there or anywhere on the east coast for that matter so I have no idea what it's like. Both are great schools academically. Where would you go?

UCSD all day erry day. Especially if you want to stay on the west coast for residency.

If you don't mind living in a smaller city, Chapel Hill is great. Also, you're right that you'll get in-state after the first year.

Chapel Hill seems nice, but La Jolla is amazing and San Diego really is an awesome city. It's big, diverse, and UCSD has a monopoly.

Does it really matter where you go to medical school in terms of residency? I mean, do residencies give preference to in state residents?

Any particular reason?

I would say you get to pay so little for a really good school. Tuition is absurdly good. I have friends in the program and they absolutely love it and CH. Can't comment on UCSD, sorry!

Thanks! I'm pretty sure I'm going to Chapel Hill. This helps me feel like I'm making the right decision.

Lol @ UCSD being more "conservative" than North Carolina... Last time I visited Charlotte, a cab driver gave me a "turn to Jesus before the end comes" pamphelet.

Then again, Chapel Hill =/= rest of NC

Yes, I didn't mean more conservative than Chapel Hill. I've never lived there so I really don't know what it's like. San Diego is more conservative than other parts of California I've lived. Currently, I live in the San Francisco bay area. That's what I was comparing it to.

I hope Chapel Hill is not too conservative...

Literally every place on earth is more conservative than the San Francisco bay area. But I get what you're saying 🙂

Chapel Hill is a great place. That said, I've heard San Diego is, too. Neither Chapel Hill nor Durham are particularly conservative as predominately college towns, but if you want to go waaay left, there's always Carrboro.

I'll be at CH next year; the people are really cool and very laid back. Congrats on the OOS acceptance! Also, the San Diego is far more conservative than Chapel Hill/Carrboro in general.
