UMDNJ-SOM Adcom meeting

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The same thing happened to me!! I hadn't heard ANYTHING from them, so I called this past Monday, and they told me they lost my LORs. They were sent out on 9/13, and I was complete there as of the end of October. I asked my undergrad committee to mail out my letters again, and they will. Should I call again next week? Is there even any hope, right now, since it's late in their process? I'm really bummed 🙁

Congrats on your interviews. I'm jealous 😛

don't worry, there's still hope. one of my classmates i know applied in feb and still got in.

I am so sorry to hear that!! I totally know how you feel 🙁

They ended up finding my LORs shortly after I called. But like you, I also sent them in again. About a 2 weeks later I got an interview invitation in the mail.

If I were you I would call next week just to verify that you are complete and that they received your LORs. They should tell you when you will be reviewed, but If not, I would ask when the next committee review is.

You are not too late! Good luck to you!:luck: I hope that you get an interview soon 🙂

Goodluck to all of you trying to get into NJ!! I am excited for all of you and you all will do well!!! :luck: 😀

I just got my call!! I am going to UMDNJ in the fall 😀 Good luck to everyone still waiting! 😀 😀

Way to go Depakote and hopefulKelliDO!
:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

I'm sitting here with my cell phone waiting and hoping!
:scared:

CONGRATS DEPAKOTE!

WE SHOULD HAVE A SDN PARTY FOR DEPAKOTE AND MYSELF 🙂

Good times. Makes my recent onslaught of rejections a little less painful.

Oh when they talk to you tell them you know a kid from PA that woudl really like an interview ::bats eyes::

Good luck pineapple!!!

I talked to Paula this morning. I've been accepted to SOM!

😀

Hmm no call here... Looks like I got waitlisted/rejected. I'll just think of it as one less school to choose from!!!

I got a message from Paula on my phone, so I assume I'm in...man, congratulations everyone!

Congrats you all! I gave up my seat at UMDNJ-SOM, so perhaps that seat will be yours, for those that were waitlisted.

Still no call...I'm afraid I'm out of luck
🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 :scared:

Anyone know Paula Watkins' direct phone number for her office?

congrats 2 everyone who got in! and 2 those still waiting, don't give up hope and remember 2 stay in constant contact w/ the admissions office (update ur file often 2 stay in touch).

hi, do you know anything about the "medical student summer research program"? I called their office today to find out if I can apply now to do it this coming summer (2007), but they did not now if I need to be registered for classes to apply. I don't want to waste my time looking for an advisor and applying if I won't be able to enroll in the end. Thanks!

🙁 I'm really devastated that I didn't hear from them today. I guess I'm waitlisted.

I'm seriously thinking of dropping the LECOM acceptances and trying UMDNJ again next year.

How do I update my grades? AACOMAS won't let me edit.

Man I am so miserably upset. I can't explain how much I want to go there.

i think i sent in new transcripts 2 aacomas and had them recalculate my gpa if i remember. i don't remember the exact procedure but i'm pretty sure i sent aacomas new transcripts. sorry 2 hear that u might b WLed. maybe u can call paula and find out how close u r 2 getting in...seems some other ppl found out how close they were 2 the "magic number" and maybe there might still b some hope if u r close and esp if ur grades this semester raise u closer 2 that "magic number" ...and try and show the school how much u really wanna go...send in frequent updates, a letter of intent, shadow some docs...if u can find a umdnj affiliated doc 2 shadow and maybe get a letter, that would prob b good. i know dr mason of the omm dept is usually open 2 having ppl shadow...or maybe u can ask paula 2 suggest someone u can shadow 2 c omm in action! show that u really r interested in learning more about osteopathic med and omm. u can also ask 2 sit in on our classes. i sat in on dr white's neuro class after my interview and arranged w/ dr mason 2 sit in on an omm class/lab. our class is a little larger this yr so there might not b a chair 2 sit in if everyone comes 2 class but during omm lab, it should b fine 2 observe if the school allows u 2. those r the only things i can suggest 2 show ur interest. but def send in a letter of intent stating som as ur top choice school. and good luck!

Pineapple,
Remember it isn't over 'til the fat lady sings! Or in baseball terms, it isn't over 'til Big Papi swings!!

But honestly - hang in there. You could still get in, you could get in off the wait list if it doesn't happen immediately, too. A bunch of us didn't get calls - we got letters in the mail! :luck:

But I wouldn't give up a seat to a school on the hope you could get into a different school the next year - we all know there's no guarantees in this process. You could think you've improved your application to be 'more what they're looking for' only to find out that next year, they change what they are looking for - or the applicant pool is more competitive, or whatever. Think about it really carefully, anyway...

I wouldn't get so down on yourself about it. I'm on the waitlist too, and I still have hope. SOM is definitely my number 1 choice too. When you talk to Paula, she's very good about giving applicants information about how close they were to being admitted. So don't throw the towel in yet because you could be very close. I like to think that I'm close to being let off (they rank you based on your composite score), and I'm doing anything possible to raise my score (getting a 4.0, updating them on new things from the semester shadowing a DO, etc). So don't give up - and even if you don't end up at UMDNJ, take another visit to LECOM and/or think about it - because even though it's not where you wanted to originally be, things happen for a reason.

I've done a LOT of shadowing at UMDNJ-SOM and know a ton of few who are all trying to get me in. I mean a lot. I don't think that any more shadowing will do any good. Haha, also, Dr. Mason is cool (not who I shadowed but he was around). Two of the UMDNJ-SOM docs sent letters in for me, one of them is a department head.

My MCAT score is undermining me.

I think my number is 2 points away from the 85. I'll have to confirm that.

I sent a letter of intent with my thank you notes but I will send another. Who should I send it to, Dean Kruger? I addressed it to the admissions committee and to my two interviewers.

Anyone know when the adcom meets next or about expected waitlist movement?

That's good advice, I just worry about LECOM and moving so much in the clinical rotations years. But then I was just talking with my dad and he said it might be ok, and that I'd be traveling for audition rotations anyway. I just hear so many complaints about LECOM on these boards and it makes me nervous. If I went it would be to PA on ISP. ISP is cool at least...

Thanks for helping me keep this in perspective. Still want UMDNJ 100000x more.

Good luck to you too. I'm a little worried that one of my grades this semester will hurt me. I got 3 As but one grade might be really bad because I had to miss 3 labs for med school interviews. VERY worried, my teacher was MAD.

well, that's great that u have som profs who already wrote u recs. i'm not sure who 2 send in the letter of intent 2 but dean krueger is pretty busy so u'd prob get more effect sending it 2 the admissions committee and maybe ur interviewers and paula. sorry i can't b more helpful w/ that. i know the big movement starts in may/june but who knows...maybe they let in some ppl here and there b/t jan and may. there's still hope esp if u r only 2 points off the 'magic number'...and yeah, orthodoc40 is right. things happen 4 a reason and if u end up at lecom, u'll prob understand why yrs down the line...but don't give up on som just yet. if u did well this semester, maybe u'll get those 2 points!

I don't know who that is, but down where I live we like to say that "2/3 or the world is covered by water...the rest is covered by Brian Dawkins."

Don't know how that applies to medical school. The only football analogy I can put to how I feel right now about not hearing from UMDNJ is this:

Well, it's not that bad. Nothing can be that bad....

Ok, pineapple, you're starting to worry me.

Try to put things in perspective. You are in somewhere, right? (and you don't even know 100% where you stand right now with UMDNJ)

Just try to sit tight until you know what the deal is...

And if, it's not good news, just remember that waitlists move and you will be a doctor somewhere.

Congratulations to all those who just got accepted!! 👍

Through the umdnj website...the only thing is it doesn't specify if I need to be currently registered for classses. I would love to get an early start on getting to know about their research opportunities since I 'd like to apply to their DO/PhD program.

could someone please PM me Paula's direct phone number... Thank you very much in advance and good luck to everyone who is waiting like I am...

email dr hock at [email protected] but i think that the MSSRP is 4 matriculated students not incoming students (u guys won't go thru registration until during orientation if that's a requirement). and even if u don't do the MSSRP, that doesn't mean u can't do research, just means u won't get a stipend. there r summer lab jobs out there that do pay so u can look 4 those if u want. MSSRP is just 2 provide a small stipend 4 rent, etc since our financial aid does not include money 4 the summer (it only covers 10 months). the MSSRP applic is due soon (jan 17th) and isn't just a short application asking 4 personal info but more like a mini-grant that has 2 b a minimum of 5-10 pages elaborating on ur hypothesis, proposed experiments, expected results, etc. so that would mean u'd have 2 basically have the advisor by now or real soon unless u know how 2 write grants quickly (just the time 2 pull journal articles 4 references 2 write the proposal and read them takes a while)... or u're real lucky and get an advisor who's willing 2 give u sth they've already written 4 u 2 use (i know my advisor is making me write my own applic). def make contact w/ dr hock either way cuz they only accept 2 students a year and it seems ur class has more than 2 who r interested on sdn alone. they'll give u at least 1st semester (or 1st yr) 2 attend grad school seminars and rotate thru labs 2 c if u really wanna do the do phd cuz they've had a couple of ppl drop out in the past and it got messy returning the tuition money (though now they're saying they'll only pay ur grad tuition and no longer the med tuition after this yr's graduating do phd students)...so they won't choose do phd students 4 ur class at matriculation but either 2nd semester or fall of 2nd yr (so 2nd yr students can also apply along w/ u guys as well). we have a 2nd yr applying this year along w/ us so there's more than 2 of us vying 4 the 2 spots.

I got my letter today. Flat out rejected, no wait list. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to ask about the financial impact the scandal on my potential education when he asked if I had any questions... 🙄

what scandal?

What was the scandal about?

There was a scandal at one of the UMDNJ MD schools.

My understanding: Physicians in the area were given "teaching jobs" that did not require them to do any actual teaching in exchange for referring patients to affiliated hospitals.

This is mostly past, but the blowback isn't affecting the education and it all occurred at the MD schools.

lol i see. thats definitely not somethin to ask about during an interview for sure

In addition, the previos dean, Wallace, tried to get his daughter admitted to the school without an MCAT. There is also a state senator that was given a 30,000 dollar per year job to do 15 minutes worth of work per week at SOM.

yes, there was a 'scandal' and it wasn't only at one of our md schools (njms), som did also have some financial indiscretions and that part about ex-dean wallace trying 2 get his daughter in w/o the proper qualifications is true. she ended up withdrawing her applic so she is not a student here. and deans wallace and gallagher r both gone. if u're really curious, u'll come up w/ alot if u do a google or sdn search. but don't worry about that past 'scandal'...none of us 1st yrs noticed anything after we entered and i can say i've been happy w/ my educational opportunities so far and do not feel that it affected our education. sure, money's been tight this yr, but that's been across the whole umdnj (md and do schools) system alike and i feel that the admin has appropriated the money in such a way not 2 sacrifice our education although some cuts did have 2 b made (like the school does not pay 4 gym memberships at the Y anymore but they did negotiate a very cheap yearly rate 4 us and that was sth the school did 2 b nice 2 the students and not sth we were in any way entitled 2)

what scandal?

Just search on google news.

It's more like "scandals" there are problems at each UMDNJ campus that are under investigation.

The only school where students are to blame is UMDNJ Dental where they were taking advantage of forms being signed off to not practice their work.

Otherwise it's all admin and politics that doesn't affect the students. I'm not worried about it whatsoever, from the student end. Everyone else is covering their butts though.

For example, you can't shred paper anymore. All sorts of little things like that which wouldn't bother students.
