UNE COM or ROWAN SOM

Got accepted to UNE and I really like the school and their curriculum but ROWAN is closer to home. Still waiting to hear back from ROWAN. I love UNE's curriculum, but I heard ROWAN's rotations are better because of their hospital affiliation. Which one would you guys choose and why?

That's a hard one. Rowan has some great clerkship sites. And I've heard UNECOM. Research wise they both seem to be strong based on NIH Reporter (UNECOM has more faculty on active research grants right now). But you just can't beat the fact that Rowan has departments through their hospital affiliates that allow you to rotate under resident teams.

I'd go with Rowan honestly. Even though there isn't much in the way of research compared to UNE, getting a solid third year experience is important to me.

Hmm... yes I concur. Third and fourth year clinicals are important for me as well because I want to gain some type of exposure. Its just I really liked UNECOM's integrated curriculum vs. Rowan's systems-based curriculum. I feel like I would learn better since everything is going to be integrated and liked together. I'm a RowanSOM student. To be completely honest, I didn't apply to UNECOM so I can't speak much to one vs the other. But, feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding the specifics of RowanSOM.

Also don't forget if you're from NJ, we have in-state tutition. That might be really worth it in the long run to save money (and interest on those loans)

It is very funny to read your post. The reason being is that I was in this same exact position back in 2006. I was accepted to UNE and waitlisted on UMDNJ. I sent in my deposit at UNEand waited for UMDNJ to decide. And while I really enjoyed the area of UNE, I had a family and the fact that I had to possibly move around for rotations and the tuition was 1/2 the price, I decided on UMDNJ. But both schools are good.

I sent in my deposit at UNEand waited for UMDNJ to decide. Thank you so much for your input guys! I really appreciate it. It definitely is a hard decision since Rowan is closer to home, but unfortunately I live in Philly so its going to cost me about an extra 15K a year to go to Rowan. I'm still weighing out my options though.

UNECOM is $51k a year and Rowan is $59k a year. The $8k while significant, isn't a huge burden. This decision is up to you, and you can't really go wrong with either.

Do you have any friends in nj who will let you establish residency there?

You can try filing taxes and say you've moved and obtain a nj license. It isn't that hard to establish residency before med school starts.

really? I have a professor who lives there and I think she would be willing to help but I think its too late to file taxes in NJ right? Tax season is right around the corner

you already applied as a student out of state when you submitted your application. So I believe it is too late. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure its based off your residency when you applied

That could be true too...it will be a sticky situation regardless. Too bad Rowan got rid of the policy about paying IS tuition after one year.

I was told this is inevitable because New Jersey is opening a new medical school in a year and there is going to be a reshuffling of state fund allocations to medical schools, probably resulting in increased tuition to both in-state and OOS students. Make sure to take that into consideration too.

The only potential other medical school I am aware of opening in new jersey is Seton Hall. But if you google this, it is going to be a private school - thus I feel like it shouldn't have too much effect on tuition!!
