2nd year here. Call.
Source: I did it and they pulled me off the HPWL during the phone call.
I can't guarantee it'll go well, so do it as a true last resort, wait as long as humanly possible for the list to move organically. But if it's right before you have to sign a lease elsewhere, call and explain "Hey, I'm about to move out of state to another school, but I REALLY want to attend RowanSOM and was wondering if you could disclose my position on the waitlist / if I have a good chance of getting pulled from it with typical turnover. I've put in updates and a LOI, and I really want to continue my education in NJ / serve the state I grew up in. Rowan is my absolute #1 and I'll attend if admitted."
Again, wait as long as you possibly can to get off the list naturally. This absolutely can come off the wrong way depending on your tone and who's picking up the phone. In the context of medical school admissions, it's a high-risk move. But: When it's the last possible minute, what do you have to lose?
P.S. if you're in-state and going to Rowan saves you like $100k-200k over 4 years, the risk/reward ratio of a ballsy phone call seems pretty worth it.
