UNTHSC/TCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You realize every time I see you as the last poster in this thread I think its going to be you proclaiming your acceptance right? 😛

EDIT: And your other texas schools -.- just saw your post in the tech thread lol

Haha same here... Noshie dominates the unt/tcom & tech thread

Aww, you guys are so sweet! 🙂 Don't worry, you will know when I get an acceptance! I will probably make a thread just to tell everyone that I finally got my first choice acceptance! And then there will be facebook updates and text messages to a few of you... Oh, if it happens, you will know... You might get sick of me after all of that!

 Looking forward to it. If not, see you at AZCOM next year. There is worse places to be 👍

I created a 2015 TCOM page on facebook. It's open to the public so just search "TCOM Class of 2015" and join!

TCOM is an amazing school partly because of the people who go there. Can't wait to meet the prospective classmates.

Good luck to the rest who weren't pre-matched today! Hope to see you in the group before long.

-Mike

Awesome!! Thanks for taking the initiative! Quick question. How come it looks different from the previous class pages?

congrats to everyone who prematched! I, on the other hand, am getting hopeless because I applied late this cycle. I interviewed at tcom on 11/12, does anyone know how long it takes before your status goes to "under review"? my status still says "you have been invited to interview"...could the thanksgiving break slowed the process?

also, are other medical schools still offering interviews?

Does Anybody know when TCOM sends out the next batch of acceptances by chance? Or reapplicants--do you rmr when the next batch went out last year? My status changed to under review on the 15th--and is still that way, so it's been about two weeks, including thanksgiving break.

Today I sent out the letter to decline my acceptance to TCOM. I hope one of you guys gets the spot!!

fyi, I got a couple of PMs asking if I had submitted a DO rec letter---> I did not.

best of luck to everyone 🙂

Hi everyone,

I still haven't received an interview at TCOM yet which makes me wonder how organize they really are. I was complete 8/2 but they didn't review me until 11/15!!! I am guaranteed an interview but the process just seem so random.

For those of you who are waiting for pre-matches. TCOM is still giving them out but slowly, not in bunches like on Nov. 15. I spoke with Dr. Sheedlo, the gross anatomy professor and an adcom member, says that TCOM's avg is about a 28. They're willing to accept lower MCAT scores so don't lose hope. They will interview 750 this year and will accept about 60-63% of interviewees. This is to ensure that they have a class size of about ~200+ because people will not choose to go to TCOM.

Best wishes to everyone.

I wouldn't mind an interview here. The only thing I can think of that they're not giving me one for is my GPA.

I got an invite last week from Southwestern, so there is still hope.

what are your stats if you dont mind me asking? UTSW admissions came to my school and said the only thing I needed to improve was my mcat which was a 29.:lame:

I was submitted 9/16, got my invite 9/18 for an interview 10/8 that sounds pretty organized to me. For someone who is "guaranteed" an interview they sure are saving you for last. Best of luck.

You are guaranteed an interview? I'm assuming you are med sci. If you are, you will get your interview. Last year they even had interviews as late as January just before the February match. Med Sci are in a different pool. If you have a 3.7 or better in the program now, chances are you will get an offer before the year is over.

Last year they even had interviews as late as January just before the February match.

They said the only reason they ran interviews so late last year was because there was a problem with Interfolio (the company contracted to run TMDSAS last year) and they didn't receive applications from highly qualified candidates until December who were submitted in July. Im not sure the same will happen this year but who knows.

I actually thinks this proves his point... Most likely there were a ton of applicants who submitted before you who hadn't been reviewed yet, and yet you got reviewed and invited in 2 days.

I have a 4.0 (post-bacc) gpa and a 35 MCAT. I am a very nontraditional applicant in that I practiced law for many years before returning to school.

eek i don't think i can match that. my gpa is 3.8 and im the usual bio major. well, good luck with your interview! 🙂

Only if you assume that they completely review applications in the order they come in, which is probably not the case. They more than likely divide applicants after received into different groups (A,B,C.D) based on some criteria. If you fit then you're assigned an A and immediate interview, maybe fit B and late interview, and on and on... If he is guaranteed an interview, why take up an early spot during the competitive interview season. I guess it depends on what you feel is organized and not organized.

If he's in the UNTHSC's SMP, he gets an interview regardless. Their interviews have nothing to do with the regular pool of applicants. They are basically competing against each other for however many spots they've saved for them. They are ranked in a separate pile than everyone else. He just needs to be patient and make sure he has his phone on and with him at all times.

Thanks. I will do that.

How do yall know that I'm a "he"???

hahaha i just use the universal he we talked about in AP english in high school!

I hate to use one or he/she 🙂

TCOM finally showed up on my TMDSAS match list this morning! I interviewed on 11/9... My status still says under review, but maybe this means they are now looking at my stuff for a chance at a prematch offer... Maybe...

Has anyone that interviewed on or after 11/9 gotten a prematch yet?

Got a call this morning at 10AM 12-2-2010 to come in for an interview at 7:30AM 12-3-2010. This is less than 24 hours for me to prepare. Is this cutting it close or what?

Do you live in the area? If not, then yes, its kind of way too close for comfort! Especially if you have to drive several hours, and definitely if you have to fly!!!

Edit... I just saw that you are medsci... That is not a close call then. Haha. You will be on campus/should be on campus anyway!!! Now you get to skip your classes for the day! I would say you are lucky! Unless you have core exams next week... Then that blows. Thats a whole day of studying down the drain...

You guessed right. I am MedSci and luckly I live nearby. A whole day of studying gone. I do have 2 core exams next week back to back. Yikes!

My status just changed to "under review" and I interviewed 11/12. How long does it take to get any further information? Also, are schools supposed to be listed on my tmdsas login page if I interviewed there? Whenever I click on "school preference list" it just sends me back to the home page right after logging in.

It took about 2 weeks for my status to change on TMDSAS.

How are we supposed to do any relevant shadowing and research if we are in class 8 to 4 m-f during the school year and with only 5 weeks off for summer?

What do you mean different? The icon?

No, I understand that the picture is different but that's all good. I was wondering why does it appear to be formatted differently (wall, info, etc) than the previous class threads?

Facebook changed the group formatting

I was originally applying this summer and decided to put it off one more year, but now I am regretting it! Just reading all of the comments on here makes me wish I had already interviewed and was waiting on notification. Just wanted to say good luck to everyone! I will be applying next summer now and TCOM is definitely one of my top choices.

This is something that I have wondered....Is there anyone who can weigh in? I have visited 5 of the Texas schools and there are several that have far less class time, which I would think would be optimum to someone who is good at prioritizing their own time. I am going visit some friends at TCOM before I apply but have any of you thought about what the typical day might be like there?

I took a gap year, and I think it was the best thing possible for me. After I graduated I did a mission trip then came back home and got a great research position; volunteer time went way up and stress went way down. Just manage your time and don't lose focus on your goal... medschool. During my interviews so many applicants were freaking out with missing class/tests/flights etc that they were so high strung, I was so glad that wasn't my situation. Best of luck

Lol thanks. Yeah I am sure that the application cycle will be stressful and aggravating in many ways. I also took a gap year to improve some parts of my application, but also decided to get a job and I have now been a professional accountant for 16 months and counting...and this is just not for me! Did you apply this summer or are you already in school?

noshie and ilostmytail

I hope this helps: I know there are a few of us on the forums who interviewed Oct 19. We haven't heard anything... and I think we are going on 7 weeks since our interviews with a steady "Under Review" status. Don't worry about the time frame, I've decided that "Under Review" is a nice place to be, because you aren't alone in the waiting and you haven't been rejected! We will all hear one way or another, but at this point just be glad you interviewed and try to be glad you are still waiting.

From what I gather from the forums, Oct 8 interviews are the last to get a prematch (at least on nov 15) and I can't really tell since then.

As hard as it is to be patient, you are not alone in this waiting. (That helps me sometimes.)

There is a very simple answer to that. You dont.

Hey everyone,

I talked to Patrick in the admissions office and he said that the committee will meet before Dec. 23 to offer some pre-matches before they leave for the break. Let's keep our fingers cross until then. :xf:

The days are going by slower already...

Full of insight. Thank you

They dont really give you the chance to do research and it is implied that they really dont want you to either. There are times when you can get a little shadowing done and it counts for your clin med hours i believe but it is only in certain situations.

OOS interviewed today. Loved the school, interviewers, and students--we'll see what happens :xf:

Has anyone that interviewed past November 15th received a late prematch yet?? I haven't seen anything on here, but other Texas schools have had some!

I've heard nothing so far and interviewed Nov. 16th.
