WSU-CVM- Applications C/O 2022

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think if you rent by mid-March you’ll be okay. Pre-leasing starts around now to early March. I rented mine in Feb and there weren’t many listing yet.

Have you accepted your spot here? They’ve been sending out the packet often so you should get it pretty soon if you have set up an email.
Just got my packet in the mail today actually! Hoping to be out around the 13-16!

@Caiter92 are all of Apartment Rentals Inc pet friendly do you know?
I think most are! From what I remember when I first emailed them, not every apartment in a building is pet friendly, but every apartment building will have pet friendly units in them. If that makes sense?

Residents were required to let them know about renewals by the 22nd of Feb I think, so they should have what units are available posted soon!

Is there anyone who goes to WSU currently and can answer some questions about parking and rent?

I'm a current student 🙂 Feel from to pm me or ask any questions here you have 🙂

Thanks Caiter! I just was wondering how expensive a green permit was? I think I’d like to commute everyday since buses sometimes take you on a loop around campus before stopping near the CVM.

Greens are the most expensive ($500?) from what my friend said and sometimes that lot fills fast. Buy a yellow 2 pass there's a small hill to walk up but there's a lot behind the hospital it runs $300. Sorry Catier I got excited about knowing things but please correct me on anything.

Does anybody have a good idea of how the waitlist moves for WSU? I've heard that in past years not many get pulled off the waitlist but wondering if anyone may have a better idea

I'm not sure if they keep separate waitlists for the Pullman and Logan campuses but I'll be giving up my OOS spot at the Logan campus! Hopefully that helps someone out!! 🙂

Not being able to qualify for IS tuition was a huge deal-breaker for me since 4 years x their OOS tuition is crazy expensive 🙁
Bummed since I really loved WSU but I suppose it was my fault for saying I was OK with either campus (but with preference for Pullman). I ended up having an option closer to my family & with comparable OOS tuition so (likely) going with that!

I was waitlisted OOS. On my letter, it says Waitlist - Pullman and Logan campus. Does anyone know if that means I will be considered for both campuses as a waitlister?

This is correct. I have a green 1 permit because I don’t live on the express bus lines so the bus would take me 30-40 minutes vs 10 on the express lines, so it was worth it to me.

I managed to get a green 1 permit first year too, but it was kind of a mad scramble. The university doesn’t allow non-renewals to purchase a permit until a week before school, which was when we were at COLE. I think this year they opened it up a few weeks earlier.

Yellow 2 or 3 (I don’t remember which ha) is behind the Vet school and a 5-10 minutes walk up the hill to class. A lot of students also park there, cause it’s like half the price. You can also sell back your permit to the school at the end of the year for a prorated refund. I should be getting $140 back, so you do get a decent amount back if you don’t keep it for the summer.

Just to make sure I'm not behind/missing something, no one has set up a vetmed.wsu email yet right? Or had access to an actual student portal?

I didn't know this. I use mine all summer, but this is pretty cool.

I park ~15 minutes from the vet school in a red lot and it was about $250, iirc. The lot I'm in doesn't fill up, so at least I know I'll always find a parking spot there.

@Caiter92 how much do you as students really use tophat? I had to use it in undergrad and quite frankly absolutely hated it.
A LOT. Pretty much every class uses it to some extent, and many of them use it to factor into your grade. I'd say about half our classes so far have used it regularly, some daily. They switched over from clickers to this my first year and I believe their plan is to stick with it from now on. Like in anatomy, we had questions every day in lab all year that were mandatory cause they used them for attendance. Principles of surgery used it for our homework assignments. you'll definitely need to get it unfortunately :/

Thanks. Just so sad lol

@Caiter92 Also I just saw where we either rent microscopes or go buy one ourselves. I looked on the internet and found a few that seem decent with a laptop connection to enlarge pictures for $200-300. Did you rent or own-suggestions on either?

I ended up just renting it! It's $100/year and I figured any clinic I would end up working at would have a better one than I could afford. Plus the school does maintenance on them for you. Though that one sounds snazy. I don't think you'd need it for histo or path, but it would be handy for parasitology. Taking good pictures with your phone through the lens is hard

Might be a silly question, but what kind of shoes do people usually wear around the VTH? Or to classes with animal handling/anatomy? I know the medical/nursing clogs are popular but can you just wear tennis shoes too?

SA Anatomy I had cheap rubber Dankso style shoes (like $20 on Amazon). You can wear your normal shoes in there, but I wouldn’t cause things get “juicy” and spill.

For LA anatomy I wore my rubber boots. Dissections are way messier than SA, so I’d definitely not wear your regular shoes for these ones.

VTH anything closed toed. A lot of people wear tennis shoes.

For our Ag animal handling classes and equine too I think we had to wear clean boots. SA we could wear tennis shoes.

@Catier92 are most ppt/lectures posted before class so I could print and bring to lecture?
I would not print lectures slides. Some classes give note packets at the beginning of the semester to print. I would do that and annotate.

If you prefer to use lecture slides, I’d get a tablet or something to write on. We’ve had professors where every ppt is 100+ slides and all pictures.

If they post lecture note packets, use those. It’s usually a more detailed version of what will be presented in ppts that’s printer friendly.

I’m in state and I go to WSU as an undergrad so every time I walk by the vet school I get unbelievably excited! Hehe you?
Oh yay! We will both be in Pullman. I'm OSS from CO. I'm flying out in 2 weeks to look for housing. I'm excited to start moving forward to August. New state for me, new adventure, I'm so excited for some of the opportunities there. -I'll open a pm with you!

Me! I'm in state at WSU right now finishing up my undergrad this semester. Are you guy on the class Facebook page? Not much activity there yet but hopefully it will be used as things get closer.

Yeah I think it’s kinda funny how much more outgoing people (myself included) are on a smaller/more anonymous scale like on here in comparison to the Facebook group where no one says anything haha

I think part of it is what do you say?
No idea haha. Also I feel like so many people in our class are older or just seem older because they’re married and some have babies and stuff and I don’t wanna come off as young and silly right off the bat

I am young and silly with no shame

Right! Young and trying to be mature, but only successful sometimes. That is why I like animals, they don't judge.

I haven't paid that much attention to our class makeup on the FB page. I do have to give props to people who do school with kids. I don't think I could.

Defiantly, Mad props to those people. Just the thought of having kids makes me shutter at this point in my life.

Does anyone know if there’s a specific GPA we have to make this semester to keep our spot or something like that? I’m not planning on bombing this semester, I just don’t even know if we have wiggle room or what...? Thanks in advance!

Depends on if you still have prerequisites you're working on or not.

Okay I think I’m still taking one and my acceptance letter said I’m in upon successful completion of those I believe.. I just know one class I’m taking for “fun” is kicking my butt!

@Catier92 or if anyone else knows. I know some schools have things like research dog colonies or resident blood donors that they end up adopting some of the dogs out. Does WSU have anything like this?

We don't anymore! But a lot of students end up adopting their junior surgery dogs 😉

Hey guys, I absolutely fell in love with this school!!! But I was accepted to my in-state which is cheaper and closer to home. It was such a gut-wrenching decision to decline the offer of admission, but I hope someone on the waitlist gets to now go to their dream school!!! Love you all and I hope you have a fantastic time at WSU (I know if I didn't get into my in-state this would have been my #1 choice HANDS DOWN!) 😍

Alright idk where I saw it, but someone was talking either on a thread around here somewhere or on FB about books about which are the necessary ones to purchase one first year vs use at the library etc? I know our books aren't up yet, but I can't imagine them changing much from year to year.

Honestly the only book you need first year is Dissection of the Dog for anatomy 🙂 Dyce can also be handy, but there is a copy in lab and the library you can take pictures of. I used it for the diagrams. There are surgery books used for principles of surgery, but there are copies online and in the library, and usually someone has a pdf copy. We never have reading assignments, and books are just suggested as a reference. I'm pretty sure a copy of every classes suggested book is also in the library if you ever wanted to go take a look at them.

@Catier92 is it true we are not required by the school to get rabies vaccinated?
We are not! Washington doesn't have any terrestrial rabies variants, so I think that's why. There is a clinic by the school every year for people that want to, and I believe it's $35-400/vax.
