i called last week and one of the people at the admissions office says that they are still deciding on a handful of people. i'm in the same position: haven't heard anything since my interview in feb.

Does anyone know if UCLA is done interviewing and if we can still send in a letter of update if we are waitlisted?

i stopped by the admissions office aout a week ago to ask about my status, and she said a couple more weeks (for initial decision as well). the people in the admissions office are really nice.

If you don't mind my asking, when did you interview? I interviewed 2 months ago and still haven't received a decision letter. :scared:

Also, does "initial decision" mean that we still have a chance at an acceptance as opposed to waitlist or hold? 😳

nope, don't mind at all. i interviewed prety late, 3/18. when i went to the admissions office, it was about 4 weeks since my interview and she told me to give it a couple more weeks (they said 4-6 weeks for some sort of response, but i think this is just generalization).

i think the initial decision can go either way, acceptance, wait/hold list, or rejection still. however, at this point, there's probably a higher likelihood of ending up on some sort of list than getting an acceptance but i think an acceptance is still possible, just not as likely as say, couple months ago.

So they do reject post interview? I thought that was what the hold list was.

not sure. i was going off of moonunitzappa's helpful post . i assumed they were post interview rejections. but you're right, hold list is pretty much zippo chance.

the british guy told me i might have to wait another few weeks... interviewed first week of march 🙁

Hey guys I am currently writing a letter of update/letter of intent and I am wondering if I should just consolidate them into one encompassing letter.
Honestly I am a fan of brevity and my update letter is only half a page long (had a few publications and more volunteer hours basically) and I can't imagine my LOI taking up any more than a third of a page. What do you guys think? Also who is the Dean of Admissions or person I should address this letter to?

If it was me, I would combine them. Neil H. Parker is the Chairman of the admissions committee.

Attention everybody: Our glorious and omni-present UCLA acceptee MJ is KING has so graciously pointed out an error in my post above. I recently stated in the UCSD thread that I would prefer attending UCSD over UCLA for a few reasons.

MJ is KING, being the spokesman all things related to UCLA, swooped in and pointed out that I had asked in this thread about writing a letter of INTENT, implying that if I would be accepted to UCLA, I would attend without a doubt. I would like to correct this error (so that MJ is KING can sleep soundly, knowing that he has made a positive influence in somebody's life) by stating that I am writing a letter of INTEREST, as I still would like to have a choice between the two schools.

Boy, sure glad that MJ is KING is keeping tabs on some of us here on SDN. If he wasn't browsing the UCSD thread, he would have never picked up on my ridiculous error that in all honesty just shows my extreme lack of judgement. What would we do without him?

PS: Thanks for your input copingmethods, I consolidated them into one letter and sent it off today.

UCLA is #11 in 2009 UC News Rankings. Last year it was #9. This is probably good news for those who are (and are going to be) waitlisted this year. Part of the reason there was so little waitlist movement last year, as compared to several years before, is because many more people chose UCLA due to its top 10 status last year.

Thoughts?

my thoughts: are you serious? LOL

I think his could be a valid argument. I'm always flabbergasted by how ignorant premeds are outside the SDN world. A LOT of people pick schools based only on ranking/prestige. It makes sense in the law/business world and the only reason that many of us know that rankings aren't worth sh it in medicine is because of SDN.

EDIT: still, I don't think it's very likely to change your fate on the waitlist 🙂

Does it matter if we address our updates to the Admissions Committee or should they be addressed to Dr. Parker? If you are sending it to Dr. Parker, is he "Dr." or "Dean"? Thanks!

in person probably Dr. Parker but on paper for a LOI I would go with Dean Parker

any news for those waiting for an initial decision ?? sigh...

i'm still waiting like you. based on last year's thread there was a status change on friday may 9th (which would be the equivalent of tomorrow for us)....

i'm wondering if those of us waiting for an initial decision were missing some of the required coursework that they asked for? i didnt take a statistics class that they required ... maybe i'm reading too much into this

so i stopped by the admissions office again today (interviewed 3.18), and she told me they are in the process of making final decisions right now, and we should hear within 2 weeks. gl everyone.

thanks dittos. it's funny that they told you to wait a couple more weeks 2 weeks ago too : P

Spidermann, I guess you will hear back when the waitlist people start getting in. Good luck!

thanks funky. good luck to you too!! may 15 is almost here! do u know how many people they generally take off the waitlist?

Interviewed on March 6th, and still waiting. I think they like my application and want to spend more time deciding whether I should be given full scholarship or at least free housing. Maybe I should let them know that even a plain simple acceptance is an acceptable offer for me. hahaha just trying not to be funny. I just want to get in. Wish everyone GL.

hey does anyone know where online I can find the exact cost of ucla attendance this year (fees and tuition), I couldn't find it on the ucla site?

I interviewed in late February and haven't heard anything since. Do you think this would be a good time to send a "letter of intent"? Or should I wait until I hear from them to see if I even made it onto the waitlist?

Thanks... and best of luck to all of you!

with the 15th fast approaching idk how much good a LOI would do. There's no reason not to send one though. I would wait and see what happens with their final decision...

They are probably deciding on more than a handful of people. UCLA interviews 750 people September - April inclusively, i.e. about 100 people per month. The vast majority of people who interviewed from February onward haven't gotten the initial decision yet. So it's quite likely there are about 300 people that still haven't received a post interview decision.

yea, my heart is still racing! interviewed 3.18. thanks mochi bear. gl to everyone

omgomgomgomg!!!!! mine tooo and I just sent an LOI this morning. eek!! i'm also freaking out!! There are alot of us with letter sent... i hope this isn't a bad sign.

if you check out the old threads letters have been sent on the 2nd friday of may for at least the past 3 years. seems like those decisions are all mixed.. wl/holds and some acceptances.

I withdrew. Good luck to those who are waitlisted!!!

given that May 15th is this Friday, this batch will prolly include a mix of accept/reject/hold/WL. Usually the first batch of the month is just acceptances but this is a special month...

good luck to everyone!
