Well I guess it looks that way because they haven't made all of their first decisions yet. I am in a batch that still has had no status change yet.
 
waitlisted as well, which i think is the best we could have hoped for in this batch...hmmmm, we'll see what will happen soon! happy may 15th everyone!!! 😀

When did you interview? I interviewed 4/8 and havent had any status change either.

Boooooooooo!! Get outta here with that. We are sitting on pin's and needles waiting to hear from admissions office, which makes me constantly check up on this site to see what is going on... then you ask that question? Cmon ... especially on THE day (may 15)...

But.. ima nice guy... so here it is.. btw.. they are not answering ur emails because they are getting inundated by our emails and calls for this cycle

What are you doing giving away the admissions office number? Obtaining that number from the deepest darkest recesses of the UCLA website is the first hurdle applicants must overcome. It's a rite of passage and is not to be taken lightly.

Now the pre-reqs (and sorry to those who don't want to see this, but you can easily scroll past it 😛 )

I received AP credit for both general chemistry's (which I know they don't accept)... I will re-take one of them, but for the other- I took a class called "Analytical Methods and Separations" for 2 credit hours (instead of 3) plus a lab, and was wondering if that would count for UCLA since it's fewer credit hours and not 'general chemistry'

Also, I am taking an economics course, Economic Statistics, and would like to know if that goes towards their math requirement even though it's labeled economics.


Anyway,

Well, as much as I value your opinion, I'm mainly concerned with the UCLA requirements as stated 🙂

"One year of college mathematics to include the study of introductory calculus and statistics"

1. Ooo I'm not sure about your analytical course to satisfy the GenChem requirements. I'm sure if you had a letter from your school explaining that students who do well on AP Chem are recommended to take the Analytical Chem class instead of gchem, you would be fine. But it may take some explaining.

2. Taking Economic Statistics instead of Stats is probably fine 👍

This number is from the interview invitation form. I don't think it's on UCLA's website.

The mail just arrived. No letter from UCLA and still no status change. I interviewed last week of February.
 
I'm in the same boat as you MUZ. I interviewed in March, and I haven't heard anything back yet.

If we assume about 10% of applicants post on SDN, it would appear that UCLA still hasn't mailed post-interview decisions to about 100 applicants.

1. While im not 100% sure, if the syllabus matches what a gen chem class does (which if it is true achem, it wont) then itll be fine. Most likely you will just end up taking it in a community college if you get accepted.

2. 100% sure this is fine, they dont care about the label as long as it has stats.
 
Letter sent 5/8/09: Hold. Goddamn, couldn't I have gotten a wl??!! 😡 So, so disappointed. I don't see why they don't just do outright rejections, there is no point of a hold category at all.

If it makes you feel any better, they did send out post-interview rejections. Like BomBom, I got one too. Had a great interview but apparently I wasn't even worth a hold...

Sorry to hear that. My interview also went fairly well, but I have a feeling that with UCLA the interview doesn't matter much. I think they've pretty much made up their mind about you before the interview.


Does anyone know what the point of the "hold" category is? Man, I'm depressed as hell right now about this, it was my last shot for med. school.

It exists to cover their asses in the event that a cataclysmic 15.0 earthquake destroys all of california except LA and everyone on their WL dies.
 
I got bored this evening and starting looking into two books that were medical school guides (US news guide to medical schools, and Best 168 medical schools by princeton review). I started looking at some of the statistical info in order to give me an indication as to how much waitlist movement there is relevant to other schools and I thought I would share with you all. These books are great because they give you an indication as to how many people apply, how many interview, how many are accepted.

I hand picked random schools in different "tiers" to see how many acceptances were offered before they filled there spots and what percentage of students accepted their offers. The following stats apply to 2006 & 2007 cycles

Harvard: 06' = 220 offers/ 165 spots ~75% of students took their offer
07' = 240 offers/ 165 spots ~69% " "

Columbia: 06' = 274/155 ~ 57%
07' = 286/155 ~54%

Duke: 06'= 183/101 ~ 55%
07'= 196/101 ~ 52%

Johns Hopkins: 06'= 259/120 ~ 47%
07' = 279/118 ~ 43%

UCSF: 06' = 257/141 ~ 55% (no in-state info)
07' = 251/147 ~ 59% (In-state; 72% took offers)

UCLA: 06'= no info.. 07'= 232/121 ~ 52% (in state, 60% took offers)

UCSD: 06' = 290/122 ~42% (no state info)
07' = 304/ 134 ~ 44% ( in state, 47% took offers)
UC Irvine: 06' = 279/104 ~ 37%
07' = 276/104 ~ 37%

Einstein: 06' = 521/180 ~34%
07' =541/183 ~ 33%

Temple: 06' = 576/175 ~ 30%
07' = 539/178~ 33%

St. Louis University: 06'= 602/176 ~ 29 %
07'= 596/181~ 30 %

New York Medical College: 06': 736/194 ~ 26%
07': 669/ 195 ~ 29 %


Yes I know, I must have been really bored, but I WAS. Not sure what you can take from all this info, but from the looks of it, there is hope for us waitlisted.... I think 😕
 
An easier way to look at the data is to use a ratio of acceptances to seats in the med school. Unfortunately, UCLA has a pretty low ratio of 1.9. Data are from US News. Other ratios of interest to some: UCSF 1.7
UCSD 2.3
UCI 2.6
UCD 2.2
The ratio does not necessarily depict the status of the med school. Some other ratios: Geo Washington 1.7
Jefferson 2.0
USC 2.2
Rochester 2.8
Einstein 3.0
Dartmouth 3.1

These ratios have many factors that go into the given results, such as the number of interviews a school will typically give, geographic factors, what other med schools are vying for similar applicants, etc.

Man I've waited this long and I need to start getting my living/financial plans in order so that I still have time to travel before medical school starts. Ugh.

What do you guys think? Do you believe he is misinformed and just telling us whatever comes to mind? Should we go off of last year's experience and expect waitlist movement to come in may?

i hope it's in may, but wouldn't that be kind of weird, since there's still a bunch of people who have not received an initial decision? Makes me think that they want to accept those people, but can't b/c of lack of room, so they'll be accepted before the waitlist moves (i mean, it's good for those people obviously, but not the previously waitlisted people). But i don't know, I'm just paranoid

Good point, didn't think of that. Either way I just hope they expedite this entire process. It's getting late.

I wrote a 1 sentence thing, because it was way back in March and I did not have time. Then I have written 2 updates and an LOI since and I am writing another short update today just with my final grades/GPA/graduation honors etc.

I would recommend that since we are so close to when they will start accepting off the waitlist to combine them. You have no time to wait.


BTW, I disagree with the previous theory that people who have not received decisions yet are more likely to get in than those on the waitlist. It seems to me that current waitlisters that were interviewed earlier in the cycle have a better chance. Don't they interview those first who they see as most promising?

Of course, I'm biased. I would love this to be true considering I interviewed in November 🙂

Did you email or send an actual printed letter via snail mail??
 
I sent my physical (not email) waitlist confirmation way back when I received my decision (maybe sometime in feb?). It was also a simple one liner that basically said "toss me onto that waiting list, I will be here waiting."

A few weeks later I sent in a paper letter outlining substantial updates since AMCAS submission and then a week after that I sent in a strongly worded letter of intent. Let's hope none of it was in vain...
 
Still no status change. I saw Dr. Parker across the street from Ronald Reagan today. Part of me wanted to stop and ask him when they may send the decisions out, including waitlist movement, but the other part of me didn't want to interrupt his conversation with another physician, so I just ended up walking past them after a moment of hesitation.

I spoke with a UCLA med student a couple of days ago and he told me that it's quite normal that UCLA hasn't yet sent initial decisions to some applicants at this point in the game. According to him, everybody getting an initial decision before May 15th last year was the exception rather than the rule. Either way, I have already prepared for the worst and began to rearrange my life for yet another medical school-less year.

who knows if it is actually true though...

So, for ppl like myself that havent recieved any status change yet(ie, I interviewed in the first week of April), I shouldnt expect anything till the first week of June?

Btw, has there been any waitlist movement yet?
