Friends of Miller,

That is bizarre... I saw the regional campus assembling for a meeting in a nearly full board room. When they meet, my understanding is that they teleconference in with the main campus and discuss all of us.

So if there was no meeting, it was because there was some issues on the main campus.

did neone receive a confirmation that the school received our fafsa? thanks.

I did by creating my CaneID and signing into myUM. There is a financial services tab and if you click that there is an option to see documents received/action required. It confirmed they had received my FAFSA.

Just received a phone call from the regional campus... I am in baby! I am in!!!!

HOLY CRAP.

Woo well congrats chuck! Sets the mind at ease a bit i'm sure!

Congratulations Chuck!!!! You really wanted this one so I'm so glad it worked out! 😀 Out of curiosity, did you send any LOI's? I'm on hold at Boca currently also, but only got the email (no temporary wording, but no snail mail letter yet either)

Nice work... CRF FTW!

Congrats Chuck! Man I am dying to get into main campus right now, I didn't apply to Boca but I am in love with Miami, I hope I get some love back!

has anyone who was placed on the "temporary" alternate waitlist heard anything from the main campus?

Alright, I cracked. I called the office to try to get some more information about my waitlist status. Basically she asked me if I got the letter with temporary on it or the regular alternate list. I am unfortunately on the regular list with no "temporary" wording and she said that means that I am at least not in the top half of the list. things are looking dreary... 🙁

I am in the same boat, but I would remain cautiously optimistic. There have been instances, as mentioned earlier, where applicants with the unfavorable letter have been admitted while those who received the "temporary" were not. Within the framework of a ranked system, the process still seems EXTREMELY random. Let's just hope for the best. :xf:

could someone clarify:

is the temporary waitlist higher than the regular waitlist, or is it worse? i have a friend who moved up (or down) and wanted to know if this was a good thing or bad thing.

congratulations to all those who were accepted btw!

tempoary is better.

i interviewed in november at the main campus and was put on the alternate list then. at that point they didnt have a temporary list. but now, if they apparently moved someone from the regular list to the temporary list, then i must be in the bottom half..

am i wrong?

just received a letter with temporary wording from miami today... :xf:

so if i understand correctly, you were previously on the general waitlist and then they mailed you a letter about being on the temp list?

I got an email that just said "alternate list."

A few days later I got a letter in the mail with the temporary wording...

The same thing happened to me. Regular alternate e-mail. Temporary alternate snail mail.

That's what happened to me for the regional campus. Regular email, Temporary Snail-mail.

Just got a call from the Office of Admissions....I'M IN!!!!!! MAIN CAMPUS!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Congratulations Mike. I'll be seeing you in August. It looks like they called me right after they called you. I'm in at the main campus too!!!😱😎👍

Hey Mike,

Were you on the temp waitlist or the regular one ? Also, when did you interview / receive your waitlist letter ?

Just got a call from the Office of Admissions....I'M IN!!!!!! MAIN CAMPUS!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

what was the number that callled? was it blocked?

That's what happened to me for the regional campus. Regular email, Temporary Snail-mail.

Wait so just to get this straight....the alternate list email is going to be the same for everyone but the snail mail can be temporary or regular?
i.e. just because the only thing I concentrated on was the email so I could be temporary and not have known?

Hey Mike,

Were you on the temp waitlist or the regular one ? Also, when did you interview / receive your waitlist letter ?

My interview was actually on the 2nd day of interviews for our application cycle, so it was wayyyyyy back in September 2008. I was waitlisted in October, and it was the regular waitlist...never placed on a temporary one (goes to show you I wouldn't put too much weight into the whole temporary thing). It's funny because I actually called the office of admissions earlier this morning asking about my status, and they basically said what we all know, sometime around May 15th the list will start moving...well I guess it started a little earlier 🙂 Good luck to all.....GO CANES!

I just withdrew my acceptance today. I hope a fellow SDNer gets my spot.

What is everyones impression of the clinical experieence @ FAU campus. I'm more interested in an urban hospital setting (like Main campus) but right now I am choosing between VCU and Regional campus and I'm REALLY not sure which way to go.

Declined my seat at the main campus. Good luck to everyone waiting!

If you do attend the regional campus, it is still possible to do rotations (primarily fourth year) at the main campus. I know that two FAU campus students will be doing a neurology rotation at the main campus this summer as third years, so just because you attend the FAU campus doesn't mean you can't get atleast some urban experience. That being said, the 3rd yr. rotations as they stand now are in Boynton Beach and Atlantis, so not exactly urban Miami. I don't think clinical education will suffer at all, it will just be a different experience than main campus. (I will be a 1st yr. at the FAU campus this fall).

Good luck on your decision, I know it's a tough one.

Thanks for the info!

i also received the phone call today! i'm psyched -- of all the schools that interviewed me, i left the university of miami with the most favorable impression. not only does it have everything i could hope for in a medical school, but walking around campus, driving around the city, the overall atmosphere...it just felt right.

good luck to fellow waitlisters! i was waitlisted everywhere i interviewed, and this is my first acceptance. it's been a long journey -- two years as a postbacc, one glide year, then the agony of being waitlisted until may. i'm seriously relieved that i won't have to reapply, and utterly pleased to be headed towards a school i really like. woo-hoo!

I withdrew from all schools today and will be going to UM this fall, im excited to meet you all, congrats!

Congrats guys!!! See ya in August!!!!! UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

congrats to you too, skin and james. Looking forward to meeting all of you in august!

I take it the waitlist should move more quickly beginning next week? I really want to go to UM, but at this point, it's my only option and I'm waitlisted, so I'm not that confident in my chances- I may need to reapply...

Well, I didn't know what to expect but I got the call from Dr. Weisman this morning! Main campus

Congrats, Kidon! I told you earlier to remain optimistic about your chances. It's good to see that they are admitting some regular alternate list people. I hope this bodes well for me sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Please give constructive and relevant answers to this urgent question:

In terms of the following areas, which campus out of Miami and Boca Raton is better and why?

1. The amount of clinical experience, and the opportunities to practice on a diverse environment with many types of patients?
2. Resources available for students in terms of libraries (preferably 24/7), textbooks etc?
3. Faculty quality?
4. USMLE averages?
5. Prestige situation when applying to a residency (when applying, will the Boca campus be seen as a secondary branch to the main campus and thus less presitigious?)
6. Match rates to residency positions and main kinds of sub-specs taken at each campus
7. How the curriculum differs not only in PBL time, but in courses and others types of clinical education as well

Thank you for your generous input. I highly appreciate it. I am still not entirely clear on the above factors, and I am deciding on which campus to go to, since I have been selected to both 🙂.

My take on the question (accepted at both campuses too):
1. Boca wins hands down with clinical experience as far as the first two years since you work a lot more hands on with patients. However in Miami you will see more variance in the patient population (obviously).

2. I think its a toss-up between the two, but I feel Boca has an advantage over Miami. My student guides at Miami main said that the library isn't really busy until exam time and that they studied a lot at home. The people at Boca said that students can come and go as they please and there's a security guard stationed in the med school.

3. Boca hands down. One of the best ratios for students:faculty I think in the nation. As far as their pedigrees, I'm not too sure.

4. From what I've read, Boca has higher USLME scores. However I don't think that's something you want to base your decision on since USMLE scores are more dependant on the individual rather than the teachings of the school IMO.

5. This question was brought up during both tours and they said that those who graduate from the Boca campus and main campus will have a degree from the University of Miami. Thus, no campus is more prestigious than the other.

6. I'm pretty sure they combine match lists with no distinction between the two campuses... (at least that's what I saw on their match day list)

7. I think there aren't that many differences between the two in curriculum, other than the teaching style. Medical education is typically comprehensive no matter where you go.

I think that Miami main has impressive hospitals but since those at Boca can do their rotations at Jackson, I don't really see any advantage in going to Miami over Boca... unless you despise PBL.
