I have a financial aid question that applies to people that are waitlisted. Pitt's deadline to submit financial aid paperwork is April 16th (I think)...so do the people that are waitlisted need to fill out the Need Access and send in our tax forms prior to that date even though we don't know whether we will be accepted? Does anyone know? 😕

I would send in financial information for all the schools that you are still interested in attending (waitlist or acceptance). That way all the information will be complete if you get off the waitlist and you'll have the financial information you need. I believe that if you get off a waitlist after May 15th you only have a week or two to decide if you are accepting that rather than your current acceptance. If the financial package is important to you, then you'll be able to find out.

If there is another school that you are waiting to hear from that you would go to over waiting on the Pitt waitlist, then I would hold off on submitting any extra forms until you hear from them. Obviously you need the FAFSA for all the schools and you can designate the information to be sent to up to 6 right away (at least that's what I remember) so I would send that in whenever you get a chance to finish it. However, any form that would be extra or cost money I would hold off until you hear from the other school. No sense in spending more time and money on completing a form that doesn't matter.

I hope that's helpful and clear enough.

Also, they will be sending you reminders to fill it out closer to the deadline if you are on the waitlist so it's definitely in your best interest to adhere to the date.

Hey,

My parents are both self employed, and will not be filling their taxes until well after the April 16th deadline. They are not able to do it earlier to help my financial aid application. So, I had them estimate on the FAFSA and the needs access that Pitt requires. However, Pitt also requires that they send a signed copy of the their tax returns, or a non-filer statement. They are going to file, but not for a while because they cannot afford to pay the taxes that they will owe until later in the year. So, they can't send in either.

Am I SOL for grants and need based loans?
Any other pre-meds/Pittmed students in this situation?
What are you going to do?

Thanks

Get them to prepare their taxes and sign it... they just don't have to send it in..... They already have the data, so this shouldn't be a big deal.

Also, warn them that they will have to pay penalties if they pay after the April deadline!

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think that they usually pay penalties, because they file for an extension on the deadline.

Email/call the financial aid office. They are a good source of information and will tell you what to do.

If you owe, it doesn't matter if you get an extension, you actually have to send an estimated payment with the extension, you'll still get penalties IF the IRS thinks your estimate is low. (Like you estimate getting a refund but owe 8k...)

But if they've done it before, the should know what they are doing.

random question -- i had a missed call from pitt this afternoon but they didn't leave a voicemail. i don't have any contact with pitt besides applying to their med school, so i was wonderign if anyone else received a call from them pertaining to ANYTHING? i haven't interviewed so it wouldn't be about that... any input is appreciated 🙂

Maybe it's a last minute interview invite! I'd badger the admissions office 😀

no one heard anything this thursday? when do interviews end?

I interviewed the first week in January...no news yet.

so, i was put on the waitlist in december after interviewing in september, and today i was randomly looking at status pages of a few schools, and this is what came up for pitt:

"Application Status

Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Official correspondence should arrive at your preferred mailing address listed on your AMCAS application within two weeks."

i never got an email/phone call or anything from them (outside of the random ones concerning the city), and i thought they weren't using the waitlist until later. not that i'm not happy, i'm just a bit confused. 😕 has this happened to anyone else?

Wow--Congratulations! Also, way to make me check my status page in like 2 seconds. Mine still says waitlist but now I'm going to return to my old habit of neurotically checking Pitt's status page. >_<

Surprise acceptance here too (waitlisted back in October), although I suspect that it's a glitch.

I was waitlisted too, and I was under the impression we'd hear something no sooner than may 15. But, it doesn't mean they can't make decisions before then. Maybe they've started to look at the waitlist?

In any case, I don't know if you can trust the website. In my experience, there haven't been many problems as far as glitches go, but I wouldn't be absolutely sure until I actually receive the packet in the mail and have it in my hands.

Congrats/good luck! 🙂

whoaaa totally surprised and pumped. received one of the $40K/yr merit scholarships, which would make financial stuff wayyyyy easier for my family... wow, i'm really at a loss for words...!!!

Congratulations streetlight! That is very impressive. How does this affect your decision with other schools that you've been accepted to?

it makes it increasingly more complex. i feel lucky to have these great options but cursed to have to make a decision between them

P.S. as per the update, LOI, etc debate, I didn't write anything to Pitt after my interview for what it's worth

me too! What is going on! I was waitlisted a few weeks ago. I saw an e-mail from Pitt (expecting one of their junk newsletters) and it said Congrats! You are accepted to Uni of Pitt. I'm shocked to say the least.

yeah haha i hope this is for real...i called them and left a message so i'll let you guys know what the say tomorrow!

Did you all get accepted the same day, or is this staggered- mon tues...?

i got the info on the revisit weekend too, but never an acceptance notice

I just checked my status page and got in! I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!

congrats! I'm not sure if I can go to second look yet. Does anyone know if they pay for transportation?

Congrats to everyone that has been accepted recently!

Now I'm obsessively checking my status page to see if I have been accepted off of the wait list. :xf:

They haven't the last two years, and I highly doubt that they would change it this year, but you get hosted by students for the weekend so you won't have to pay for a hotel.

CarrieBad, when did you interview/get on waitlist? 🙂 tx!

just got home and i got an acceptance package in the mail . i guess the status page change from waitlist to acceptance wasn't a glitch after all.

I got one too. This is when it gets complicated 😀

WOOHOOOOO!!! are you guys going to second look?

I interviewed in early December and was waitlisted in the middle of Feb. I wrote a LOI as it is my first choice, so that probably helped.

I'm not sure. I want to but I have another second look for that weekend already 🙁 IDK if I'm going to go to Pitt's instead or maybe come on another weekend & make my own second look.

Wow! I'm in!!! :soexcited: I interviewed the first week of January and was never waitlisted.

hey cacao.. Did you happen to write a letter of intent?

(interviewed end of jan.. and hoping) 🙂

Hey Blok468!

I sent (by email) an update letter...which ended w/a short paragraph about how much I enjoyed Pitt. I didn't submit a letter of intent. However, my email was never acknowledged (I sent it a week before I got the decision). I don't know if it impacted the decision, but I'm glad I sent my updates just to have the peace of mind.

If you feel comfortable writing a letter of intent, I don't think it would hurt. My student host told me that one of the people he hosted last year was waitlisted, but then sent a letter of intent and was immediately accepted (so Pitt seems pretty responsive to letters of intent).

I interviewed the first week of Jan and heard at the 8 week mark, so I'm going to guess you'll hear in the weeks to come. Good luck!:luck:

so happy for all of you! i'm glad to see pitt is back to making people happy instead of pissing everyone off with waitlists haha.

about second look--i didn't go because i knew that i was going to go to pitt. i've heard from people who did go, though, that it was a lot of fun. i'm pretty sure at least one relationship started blossoming that weekend...

However, if you can't make it to the official second look weekend, think about coming another weekend or weekday. You can probably find someone to show you around--most likely a first year unless you choose to come toward the end of april when second years are done with boards.

So all's quiet on the Pittsburgh front? I guess acceptances were only going out to waitlisters for a week or so. Bummer... I guess May's the next month to get freaked out about- was really hoping to be able to procure an acceptance and actually settle before June. Isn't it a bit crazy that it's expected to drop everything and run across the country last minute? I guess not- I'm willing to.

I wonder how Pitt is descriminating on acceptance vs more waiting. As far as I can tell my stats are comparable to those getting in; Med School adcoms are a complete mystery to me. Apparently letters of intent aren't the factor- sent one of those a month ago and nothing came of it.

Also, does anyone know how much one's undergraduate school affects chances? I have multiple friends with excellent resumes that have had crap luck with admissions this year. The only common factor is our institute so it makes me wonder. I hate to think that it's that though. . . not everyone can afford Ivy tuition... it's just depressing. I want one of my friends to succeed! So far it's been sad story after sad story.

Sorry to hear that man, it's hard to say what goes on with admissions but you're not alone feeling the frustration. Hope everything works out!

So happy for those who've gotten in recently. I'm still waitlisted...

Thanks Cacao (and of course congratulations)!

To the rest of us waiting... 🙂

So I guess that was it in terms of waitlist movement? Anyone hear anything recently?
