I have my Keck interview in a week and a half. I've talked to current medical students, and they rave about ICM. Can anyone explain to me why ICM is better than curricula at other schools? I understand that it's a very patient centered approach to teaching medicine, so do other schools not have a patient centered appoach?

Thanks

I don't know about other schools, but I believe it is quite rare to do what we do here at Keck as first and second years in ICM. We do our first patient interview the second week of school. This semester (1st year) we are learning physical exam and will start doing them on patients soon. It's incredible to have patient interactions so early and it is an amazing experience.

I just got my acceptance letter today, first one! It feels good to know that I'll start med school next year. I was complete back in August, interviewed on Halloween and my acceptance was dated Jan. 5. Anyway good luck to everybody out there, I hope to see you guys next year in the class!

Congratz bufnita!
Maybe we will be classmates next year. I LOVE KECK!

I know USC explicitly says not to send "in the area" messages, but has anyone tried sending one anyway? I'm going to UCLA next month, and if by some miracle I did get a USC interview, there is no way I'd be able to afford it. Should I try calling/e-mailing, or will that just piss them off?

Congrats!

so how does usc send out interview invites on Sunday? are they automatic from a few days before? I want one 🙂

I'm hoping tomorrow will be the day I get my letter! I've been waiting since 1/12 for any news. Any one get any good news this week?!? :xf:

Were you placed on the alternate list first and then got accepted or was this the first correspondence you had received since your interview in October? I was interviewed on Halloween as well and I received my alternate list decision in mid-December.

🙁 Sadly I will have to wait even longer to know my fate. Good luck to everyone waiting!

No, I wasn't placed on the alternate list. The first correspondence I got after the interview was an acceptance (but it did take a bit longer than expected).

this is a bit early, but any alternate list-ers hear any news yet?

i too am waiting nervously! :scared:

i'm interviewing next week and am a bit concerned about how to get around la. my hotel is only about a half mile away from union station (which i can apparently take a shuttle to from the airport?)...is it safe to walk by myself in this area?

Hey there Vbdoc77... I did the same thing that you will be doing. I took the shuttle to union station which is like $4 or something (I had to wait like 40 minutes for the shuttle though). Then I walked through Union Station to get a taxi at the taxi stand. When I told them where my hotel was (I stayed at the Best Western in Korea Town...I think maybe it was china town...) anyway when I told them where the hotel was he kinda laughed and said "thats like 10 blocks away" and I said okay I still want a taxi. So he took me to the hotel and told me to pay him whatever I wanted to. I gave him a $10 and checked into the hotel.

I would say that you should prolly get a taxi from union station...just cuz I would not want to wander around with my luggage in an area I dont know.

I would say that the area was pretty busy/safe during the day (I walked around by myself for like 2.5 hours) but at night I probably would not want to walk around just for fun (especially if you are a female).

Anyway...Keck is awesome! If you get into the school I may see you next year.

Does Keck ever take anyone off the alternate list before May 15th?

Hey, would someone remind me how to find out our passwords to log onto the status check?? I knew at one point, it was saved onto my computer thereafter, then my computer crashed. Now I longer know. Help! 🙂

I was told by the lady in the admissions office that you can be taken off the alternate list before may 15. But, from the looks like it, it's probably unlikely to happen.

I'm waiting too!! 🙁

This whole wait is quite draining. Hang in there, I've been looking at previous years waitlist movement threads, and it seems like pretty substantial movement occurs right around May 15th through early June. I'm just going to keep them updated and let them know how much I want it.

:luck::xf::luck:

I just interviewed today, and to say the least I love the school. Hopefully 5-6 weeks goes by quickly.

Does anyone know how generous they are with their scholarships? 42k a year in tuition is ridiculously steep compared to the UCs.

I think most of their scholarships are for 3rd and 4th year students, so you may not get a very impressive finaid offer.

I hear you on that one. I really, really liked the school, but the cost is hard to stomach. Here's to hoping for some good financial aid ...

:luck: with your decision. The interviews definitely play a large role in the process so it's a good sign that you thought it went well.

ScottyT: We may be in the same boat in terms of deciding between USC and UCSD. What are your thoughts right now, and how are you leaning????

I heard today at the financial aid meeting that most scholarship is in the 3rd and 4th year as you said. Bummer.

ScottyT: We may be in the same boat in terms of deciding between USC and UCSD. What are your thoughts right now, and how are you leaning????

I think both institutions are tremendously good. Everyone knows UCSD is great, but I would place USC on a similar level. The school is really on the rise and they match extremely well (esp. at coveted USC residencies). I can't imagine that you'll find a better clinical experience than what you receive at the LAC+USC hospital. Like I said in some other thread, I really like the fact that people choose USC for medical school. No one settles for it and all the students really want to be there and are happy to be there. I mean, you really have to be sold on the place to choose 70k cost of attendance with minimal financial aid.

It's hard for me to make a choice though; I'm in a somewhat complicated situation where my significant other can relocate with me to some of the schools I've gotten into but not others. It's going to come down to where I feel that I'll be happiest both educationally and with my S/O. We are willing to be living apart for med school, but maintaining a LD relationship can be a drag. I've loved every school that I've been to and it's going to be a really tough choice for me. Second looks are definitely going to play a role in my final decision.

so i get this call from the admissions office asking for my mailing adress, email adress and fone number confirmation. wonder if i should be expecting an acceptance later today? cant wait to wake up and find out.

Hey guys! I am a first year at keck and you can feel free to message me if you have any questions. I will try to get back to you as soon as I can.

Having said that, I should tell you that I seriously LOVE this school!! and I can't really think of anyone here that isn't happy. I am pretty good at being objective, but I may be a little biased.

Oh, and to the people deciding between USC and UCSD... I can't speak for the other UC's (I have heard good things about UCLA) but I went to UCSD for undergrad and a lot of my friends ended up going there for med school. Its an amazingly well ranked school in a great location, but make sure you look at the level of student satisfaction. All 3 of my friends who go there either hated the school or just tolerated it. That may not be true anymore, but just make sure you pick a place you will be HAPPY! I know it sounds cliche but if you are miserable (or even just indifferent) at your school, then you are less likely to be active there. I don't care how well ranked your school is, if you are miserable, it will show on your match day!

GOOD LUCK GUYS!! 😀:diebanana:<--- okay, thats just cool!

Keck is awesome! I am trying to get advice on how to best go about getting in off the alternate list. Do you know if people get off before May 15th and if so did they write updates, letters of intent, or send in extra letters of rec? Any help you can offer would be great! Fight On!

What year are your friends or did they already graduate at UCSD? I've seen a pattern that MS1 and MS2s love it there, but MS3s and up have differing opinions. Thanks

Argh! The USC deposit is non-refundable. Dang it, seems like every other school will give you your money back if you tell them before May 15. Sorry, just had to rant.

HELLO KECK!

yay, acceptance letter 2day!

wait....$100 dollar non-refundable deposit due back in 10 days??😱

BYE-BYE KECK!

lol

How long is it taking to get answers these days?

has anyone been either rejected post-secondary are given an interivew recently? I have been complete 4 months and have heard nothing. I called and they said they keep interviewing up until April, but what does it mean at this point? Does the committee not agree on me?

I interviewed Dec. 9th and called for an update today. Apparently the ADCOM made a decision on 1-26 and mailed my letter last Friday... It is now almost Tuesday and I live in Iowa.... ::::: biting fingernails :::::

Hey does anyone know when USC starts their 2009-2010 academic year?

Hey does anyone know when USC starts their 2009-2010 academic year?

They usually start the second monday in August (At least for the past couple years)...so my guess would be August 10th.

Are you for sure going?...because I am like 75% sure that I will attend

I got in!!!! Interviewed Dec 9th and got letter on Jan 31!!!! Whoot Whoot my top choice. And i found out I got into UCI!!! And I won my Super Bowl pool! BEST WEEKEND EVER!!!

Hey I was looking in last years Keck thread and found the Match results for 2008. I thought some people would be interested...Dont know too much about where a "good" residency is for each speciality but I was impressed with the names of the places where the were going.

Has anyone had anyluck with in the area emails or letters of interest? Would love to interview at keck... hope they are still sending invites!

Just got accepted tonight, interviewed in early December.

I sent a letter of interest after interviewing...it was never acknowledged so I'm not sure if it helped.

i think it was posted earlier that usc doesn't take update letters

For what its worth, I didn't send a letter. At my interview they told us to send them to the Admissions Office -- and they would distribute them to the interviewers.
