I'm a little bit encouraged by the fact that *no one* has so far reported a waitlist or rejection from Keck. I mean, its possible that I would be the first, but still.

I'm hoping they just don't send those bad decisions out till later 😉

I got waitlisted today...so I guess that makes me the first one. I interviewed on 10/21.

Don't lose hope. I know quite a few people who got in off the waitlist in my class.

ive been complete at keck for at least 2 1/2 months now, and i havent heard back whether i got an interview or not.....is anybody else in a similar situation? also does anyone know when their interview season ends?

I was complete for 3 months and one week before I got an interview invite. Don't lose hope!

i'm in the same boat waiting for a response of an interview or not. i completed my application in sept.

complete 8/28 and its all quiet on the Western front for me (USC is the only school I applied to west of the rockies). I was wondering the same thing if at some point getting an interview is unrealistic (I imagine i'd already be in the February interview groups if i got one tomorrow).

*sigh* Waitlist
Aw.. sorry man I was really pulling for you..

I am so nervous now.. nothing in the mail for me today but I think it could be here by Monday or Tuesday...

Don't worry about it, I believe UCS's waitlist tends to move pretty well and you have lots of other interviews and schools to hear from.. All hope is not lost!

Gah! Not in the mail again today... this means I have to wait until at least Monday!

This is making it very hard to study for finals...

Are letters of interest recommended for those who are waitlisted?

DEFINITELY!! How is the admissions committee supposed to know that you care at all if you don't write a letter or two to tell them? I know last year that I got waitlisted at a couple of schools that I really didn't like anyway. So, I didn't bother with letters or anything. And if I had gotten accepted, I would not have attended. When USC starts going to their waitlist, I would think they would want to start with those people who made it clear that they want it!

I did not get waitlisted at Keck, but I did send a letter of interest right after my interview because I knew immediately that I wanted to go there above any other school. I got accepted only a few weeks later!

So I scheduled my interview online but have not received anymore information about it. When will they send me informaiton about my interview time, interviewer etc? My interview day is January 21.

I recently got into USC-Keck, and there is a good chance that I will wind up there as my S/O can relocate with her job to Santa Monica. I have a few questions for those Los Angelenos/Keckians out there.

Where is it possible to live where the commute wouldn't be excruciating on either of us but we could still leave the house at night (safety-wise)?

Does it make sense to live closer to Santa Monica? It seemed like EB on the 10 is not too bad in the morning and WB at night isn't too bad either. Any experiences with which direction the traffic is heaviest?

Price doesn't matter too much because she makes good money and we're willing to pay for a decent neighborhood. We would like to be within walking distance to some form of coffee shop/retail area where we could possibly eat dinner and get beer.

:luck: to those on the waitlist and waiting to hear back.

I have a similar question on where to live. Is there any place that is within walking distance to campus so I dont have to drive?

Trust me, you wouldn't want to live in the surrounding neighborhood. Outside of that, your only option would be to live in the dorms. However, everyone I talked to said the dorms at Keck were pretty bad.

scottyT:

Some people mentioned that Old Town Pasadena is a good spot to live. Unfortunately, while the drive is typically ~20 mins, traffic can be a major pain. I wouldn't live in Santa Monica because that drive can get very bad. The drive from Santa Monica to USC can technically take ~30 mins, but you're looking more at 1.5 hours, especially during rush hour. Heck, it can even take longer than that. Then, of course, you have to drive back home. Furthermore, you will be driving WITH traffic, NOT against it.

If money doesn't matter, there are plenty of nice places between Santa Monica and USC, such as Los Feliz, West Hollywood, Hollywood, Silver Lake, Mid City, westwood....

I didn't hear from them until the day before. The office will call you the day before to make sure you know when your interviews are. Also, sometime before your interview (probably somewhere around a week to the day before) you can see who your faculty interviewer is online. I was supposed to call him to make sure we were on the same page about where and when but I couldn't get a hold of him. When the office called I told them he wasn't answering and they said it was fine - they knew that he knew about it so it was all good.

Good luck! :luck:

To the guy whose SO will be working in Santa Monica, I definitely don't recommend living in SM because your commute will be terrible. I say West Hollywood or Culver City are good options that would meet your needs for a fun neighborhood. Los Feliz is awesome, but probably would be a long drive to Santa Monica. If you lived in West Hollywood or Culver City, you would have a longer drive to SC, but if you're willing to take the longer commute, the neighborhoods are cool.

And to the other person who is wondering if there are places in walking distance, I'd say generally no. But I do know two people who live close (one walks and the other bikes to school). The neighborhood is really not good, but they don't mind it because they are close. I personally would never do it because I wouldn't feel safe. But to each his own...

A lot of us live in Alhambra, Monterey Park, and South Pasadena. These are the closest neighborhoods that are livable (South Pas is definitely nicest). Other students live in Pasadena and Los Feliz area which are farther away, but really fun places to live! You can take the bus to school from Alhambra and probably South Pas and Monterey Park. You can take the metro from Pasadena but have to transfer to a bus at Union Station.

Hope that helped.

Just had an interview last week -- flew in from Iowa -- boy is LA different than the midwest -- but I liked it! Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm currently a grad student at USC and live in Westwood, next to Santa Monica. As others have mentioned, the surrounding area of HSC, where the medical school is, is not very safe. I don't know crime statistics, but it isn't the nicest looking part of LA. I do know some people that live close by, but they still drive to school instead of walking. I would recommend living closer towards Alhambra. There is a shuttle from their Alhambra campus to HSC and it normally takes 10 mins. The parking is cheaper at the Alhambra campus as well. Also, Alhambra has more of the coffee shops/retail area that you are looking for. South Pasadena is right next to Alhambra if you want more options.

If you are looking to live in Santa Monica, the commute will be brutal. However, the commute going EB is way better than WB. Your SO will probably be sitting in traffic for awhile if she commutes. But, in the morning (8-9), it is about 45min-1hr drive. At night (4-5), it is about 1hr-1 1/2hrs. Something in the middle, kind of, is Culver City. It is closer to Santa Monica than USC, but the neighborhood is good.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope it helps.

if you live on the outskirts of beverly hills or even in the east side of beverly hills your commute to usc shouldnt be more than 20 to 30 minutes bw 8-9 am and if your SO takes olympic or pico she could get to santa monica in 30 minutes bw 8-9 .... you could find some relativly decent priced apartments in the area if you look hard enough hope this helps

mmagnett--when was your app complete?

Man, I was really hoping to get my letter in the mail today. Just have to keep waiting I guess

DANG! Letter didn't come today.

I interviewed 10/31, where you at USC!?

I interviewed on 10/31. With all the action on this thread the last few days I thought I might get the letter today. Yeah, I was there. I was the only applicant from Idaho that day.

for all your suggestions on places to live. This definitely gives me some material for my Craigslist searching. Culver City/Palms and weho look pretty nice right now. It's nice to hear someone real talk about the neighborhood and give me some more information beyond what I can gather from looking at google maps.

Let me know if you have any other questions related to moving here or starting school here or anything at all. I LOVE USC and I think you are making an excellent choice if you come here!

I just called the office today to see if I should change the address my letter will be sent to and they told me I wouldn't hear from them before January. I interviewed on 10/31. I don't know if that means that a final decision hasn't been made for everybody who interviewed that day or not. Anyway, at least I won't get so excited about the mail for the next few weeks. Good luck to everybody else waiting to hear back.:luck:

What!? But the people who interviewed on 11/29 heard back Friday!

Did they say it would be like that for everyone?

I didn't really think to ask. All she said was that my app was still in the committee.

People that interviewed 11/29 have already heard back?

Does USC hand out any post-interview rejections or do all the non-acceptances go to the waitlist?

i'd like to know this too. any rejections from USC yet?

Well I'm now at 50 days since my interview (7 weeks, 1 day). So much for 4-6 weeks...

you got it.

you want to be going east in the morning and west at night.

10 east at night = hell.

I just got an acceptance letter in the mail today! (I interviewed on 10/31)

Congrats!

I interviewed 10/31 as well, was expecting my letter today but didn't come! Hoping I'll find out Monday!

Edit: Is it a "letter" or a packet? Also, are you local? I live in Fresno, CA so I'm thinking it may be taking longer due to the Christmas season..

Arghh! It still hasn't come yet!

It is now 7 weeks and 3 days.

If they meant 7-8 weeks, then why didn't they say so!!!

boo waitlisted... usc was probably my #1 🙁

Just FYI,I interviewed 10/31 also and got mine today (although it was dated 12/15).. But I will definitely not be attending USC so will be withdrawing my spot. So here's to praying my seat goes to a SDN waitlister! Good luck everyone! I'm sure USC is a great school, I just didn't see the best side of it on interview day and it's not the right school for me personally.

when does usc interview till? (as in, if i haven't gotten an interview should i stop hoping?)

sweetb, im in the same boat. i am really interested in USC and have stats above their averages for mcat and gpa, but i havent received an interview yet either. i believe they interview until early april, so we should still have some time. im trying to stay positive!

yah, and so does 70% of every1 else that applies. they could prolly fill therye class with ppl who have stats above their current averages. so clearly, they are looking for something MORE than stats. not to say you can fix that now, but ppl are so fixated on stats (myself included 🙄) haha but goodluck yo!
