anyone know if these guys are still offering interviews?

I also did the waiting till the deadline thing which turned out to be a horrible idea.

Of the med schools I sent in before the end of september, I got interviews at almost all of them, of the med schools I sent after september, I got an interview at just 1.

exact same story with me. applying late hurts. i've pretty much lost hope for usc.

Does anyone know if USC will have a second look week for accepted students?

It's May 1st, a Friday. You should receive an e-vite for it once you've been accepted

how long did it take for you to get the e-vite once you got the acceptance letter?

I received the e-vite on Feb 9th but I was accepted in December so I think I received it the day they posted it.
Sorry I can't be more helpful with the timeline

thanks for the info....i was accepted last week so I guess I'll have to wait a while maybe....

Has anybody who interviewed 1/20 heard their decision? I know they said within 6 weeks...but I'm going batty. I sent a LOI.

If you did hear, when?

Acceptances are by email, but rejections and waitlist are by snail mail, right? Does anything on your status page change?

acceptances come in a thin envelope........not sure about WLs/rejections

neone get an invite lately? When r they done giving out invites? I want one...

I called the office yesterday and asked if there was still hope. The person from admissions said that the class was still open and that they are still sending out interviews until about end of March. Keeping fingers crossed...:xf:

Acceptances come in a normal size envelope but they are pretty thick because there are like 6 sheets of paper in them.

Shoot the acceptance letter itself is two full pages long (my other acceptances letters are between 2 sentences and half a page)

Also, BEST acceptance letter ever.

Ya it is a pretty nice acceptance letter...though I was sort of worried when I saw the normal size envelope. It was my first med school acceptance and for some reason I kind of assumed they would come in the big "book" size envelopes and would include something more substantial so I was definitely thinking "oh ****".

Man I don't understand USC at all. I have been complete since the earliest you can be complete (don't even remember it was that far back). I haven't heard a single word from USC.. no interview invite, no notice of completion, not even a rejection. What makes it more frustrating is that I am totally qualified (interviewed at all UCs and some name brand programs etc) AND my dad donates serious money every single year to USC (he was an alumni). YET, they haven't sent me anything. Do you guys think a letter of interest would help?

Did you ever call just to see if it was complete? Maybe something went wrong...i definitely know people who have had crazy things happen (One girl I know took the MCATs a second time and did really great but for some reason AMCAS only sent all her schools the original schools and not the new ones...).

My father is an Alum of UW and gives money every year. I didn't even get an interview 🙁

I think you are accepted to UCSD? If you are I'll trade with you 🙂

I just may take you up on that offer since I would love to stay in LA. Wow that's interesting about your dad and U-dub... I just find it so incredibly hard to believe that this would happen at USC, a school famous for its fantastic alumni connection and love for legacies. I mean I recieved a 15k/year scholarship to go there for UG (regret not taking this every single day of my ugrad career), so it could be that they are bitter about that. Haha. Any idea about sending a letter?

Ditto. Rejection or invite, please. (To be fair, I'm probably not as qualified or as legacy is you.)

I am alum and a legacy. I got waitlisted....and I have also heard that Keck does not play favorites for SC alum.

This may not apply to the email about second look, but there is a google group for accepted students. When asked, someone in admissions said you get the invite for the group after your deposit check has been processed (for me that took around 3 weeks). It could be that you won't get emails for accepted students until then as well.

I'm not a washington resident and they rejected me PRE-secondary...literally saying in the rejection "You aren't what we are looking for in an out of state applicant". They say on their webpage and what not that they like people interested in rural medicine...and I'm the exact opposite. So really it made sense, I was just surprised I didn't even get a secondary considering my dad consistently gives money every year.

EDIT:

If we could trade I would. I REALLY liked USC and really the only thing I didn't like was the location. I would PREFER not be in LA. I know I'll survive, but I would rather be somewhere like La Jolla.

Man what is up with this school? All of us were way overqualified (strictly based on numbers) yet no love. Oh well, at least I have another cali option. It just would have been nice to interview at a school that my dad DONATES to every year (he tells me if they don't get back to me, USC can shove it and will not recieve a single cent from him for the rest of his life.. it's nice to know my dad has my back).

I don't know what your states are but mine are a little higher than the other guy who got waitlisted...so maybe they just have a very competitive group of applicants this year.

i called yesterday and the lady said that if you haven't gotten an interview by march 20, then its pretty much over. i want one! it's my last chance in california!

Hmm... it's good to know that there are still good, honest people out there who believe that they should be treated differently in admissions because of their parents financial situations.

I sincerely hope that ya'll got no love from said places because the conflict of interest was noted and not because there simply were more qualified (yes, numbers =/= qualified) people for the spot than you.

Seriously; I thought the "pre-meds who feel entitled to a school because of money and connections" story was only a myth, but I guess I was wrong...

I said I understood why UW wouldn't want me. When it comes down to it I didn't fit the profile they are looking for. And to be honest I'm not sure I would have gone (especially considering the very high chance of not even being in Seattle for the first two years, which would suck). I was just a little surprised considering I was well above their qualifications AND I have family history. Though even if I did get an interview I wouldn't know if that was because of A. My father or B. my qualifications. My grand father and great grand father went to Tufts for medical school and I got an interview there, but I'm not sure if it was because of my family.

Hey, hey, no offense intended; I wasn't even talking about you 🙂. I was just surprised by some of the attitudes shown here. It's something I hear about but never really witness myself.

My father was a probation officer. He said I would be a shoo-in to get into the night classes he took at community college. He did not donate any money to the school, but I think he went to a pot-luck night on campus and brought Ribs...so yeah...he is kinda a big deal.

My grandfather on the other hand said I would be a shoo-in to working at UC Berkley, he said he could get me on as a janitor because he had cleaned up that campus every day from 1952 to 1983!! Towards the end he said that he got onto the Lawn and Garden crew...but he says I will need to work up to that.

It actually makes me cringe to hear people feel as entitled as some of the above posts. Maybe a little jealous too (if I were being honest). It also makes me feel like I am so lucky to have broken into this "medical club" because there are not many people like me with NOBODY in their family who has EVER been a Doctor or any other type of professional (in the 300 year history of my family)

I don't know about my maternal ancestors before they immigrated from the then-Austrian Empire, but the rest of my family is a similar story back to the 1730s.

Now that you mention it, he was an alum of the engineering school so I guess I understand why there's no connection going on there. But even when you look at my stats (39R, 3.88 GPA 4.00 science) I should have at least gotten an interview, especially when I have been to UCSF, harvard, etc etc. Honestly all I wanted was to be in LA, which is why I strived so hard to get those stats, but both USC and UCLA have given me the cold shoulder.

And to all of you who think I am a piece of trash for thinking that I am entitled to a spot because of my money and connections: piss off. How can you all be so naive that you miss the fact that the world runs on money and connections. I am sorry but the "meritocracy" that we have here is a complete and utter joke. I am actually glad some of you are getting a chance to go to USC because that is how 99% of that school functions.

it's all the same: I sincerely hope you get into USC so you can get a dose of real life.

Whoa there. No one called you a piece of trash; we're just irritated at the sense of entitlement you have about this whole process. All we can do is try our best, and if it doesn't work out, then it doesn't work out. You're the one being naive here if you honestly expected us all to simply accept and ignore the fact that you thought your money and connections made you deserve an interview over many other qualified applicants with similarly high numbers.

Ya I don't think the upper division schools within the USC umbrella really cooperate as far as alumni go. If he was an alum of the medical school then I would be really surprised. I am surprised just given your stats that you didn't get an interview. 4.00 Science GPA and a 39 is well above the average for USC (even for UCLA). Weird things happen sometimes.

I really wish we could trade. Sorry 🙁

I'm kind of offended by the turn this thread took. Just because we're legacies doesn't change the fact a lot of us are qualified to get accepted into Keck.

Perhaps you are naive to think that your sense of entitlement didn't come across in your USC application and spoil all your hard work. Perhaps you have overlooked the fact that the medical school is trying to distinguish itself from the fiasco that is the USC dental school, so it isn't giving in to "connections" and money these years. Each of the schools is an independent body, so maybe you shouldn't characterize them together...I know that those of us from southern california have all heard USC called "University of Spoiled Children," but I have never met an alum or current student who was as ok with that and lacked a wish to fix it as you appear to be...perhaps that's why you aren't a good fit?

You do bring up a good point.. I didn't know USC was trying to "clean up it's act" so to speak so in that sense I can see why I didn't get an interview. Maybe they went out of their way to make sure that anybody with a USC connection was given a very "thorough" review. As for my sense of entitlement coming through in my application, I doubt that was the reason. I made no mention of any of this in my app and thought my stats and ECs would speak for themselves. Whatever though; imho it's USC's loss. UCSD here I come. Good luck everybody.

I just want to say that most of the legacies posting on here are probably more qualified than I am.

...however, I was speaking about the sense of entitlement shown by some about being a legacy.

hmph. Why does USC get all the ish when it comes to legacies, entitlement, and alumni connections? I am sure the Ivys like Harvard and Yale are the same way, but no one cares that they favor legacies or donations.

Well congrats on getting it. I am not bitter about my waitlist at all. Just terribly terribly sad as I already know what a wonderful place USC is despite the surrounding neighborhood.

So how much does he donate per year? It better be a high 5 or 6 digit number if you feel entitled to get an interview.

Well yea, thats exactly why I feel entitled to an interview. Like I said, USC's loss.

And I agree with mzchristie, if this was the Harvard or Yale thread, all this legacy entitlement would be accepted.. probably even considered a status quo, but oh no! never in the USC thread!

Out of curiosity, how on earth would they even know that your dad is a USC alumnus? Did you write them a letter to inform them of this? Was it a question that I overlooked on their secondary?

Yea after thinking about it and what somebody above said, apparently they are independent institutions and thus they probably had no idea I was an alumni. I just assumed that USC kept tabs on things like this (they did for when I applied there 4 years earlier for ugrad). Like I said, I made no mention of it because I didn't want to give off that air of entitlement and simply because I thought my stats/ECs could stand on their own.

As for the question on the secondarly, IIRC they only ask for alumni of the medical school if even that. I turned it in so long ago that I don't remember.

Some schools have a question about alumni on their secondary (alumni on the medical school). I remember for a fact Tufts did (since I had something to put down). I don't remember about USC.

The only thing I know USC does in terms of family connections is they have some sort of a scholarship for students when two members of the same immediate family are enrolled at the same time (at any of the schools, so one in med school and one in undergrad etc...).

And I agree with mzchristie, if this was the Harvard or Yale thread, all this legacy entitlement would be accepted.. probably even considered a status quo, but oh no! never in the USC thread!

I've got 3 degrees from Ivies. I've worked at another's med school for another. I've gotta be honest with you that I don't feel like an open sense of entitlement is accepted or all that common. I work closely with clinical professors who do interviews, and I think they would reject an applicant who communicated such sentiments, honestly. And with extremely rare exceptions, there is no overarching safety net to rescue those applicants from their own words/attitude in a bad interview.

Anyhow, moving on with the "school specific discussion"...with your #'s, there is no statistical reason why you shouldn't have received a secondary from USC. If you have double-checked that everything was received and is in order, can you account for what wasn't ideal for USC that you wrote in your 2ndary and perhaps address it in an update? USC is incredibly concerned with specific issues and is very proud of specific aspects of its education. When they asked why you wanted to go to Keck, did you just say basically "I want to stay in LA. I want a good education." Or did you find things specific to them. Technically they don't accept updates prior to receiving an interview, but the worst they can do is disregard your letter. Update them that you have received interview/acceptances X, Y, Z, but you believe that USC is much more aligned with your educational aspirations b/c of __________, and you would truly appreciate being offered an interview b/c in spite of your fortune of being offered these great choices, you believe that USC would place above these other institutions due to those offerings, etc. Admit that you re-read your 2ndary and don't think your intentions came across as clearly as you hoped.

There is a lot more to the real world than learning that things are earned by connections and the like...and if you feel the world is governed by connections, beware the potential connections you may burn when you offend people who may later be in a position to help you.

Good luck.

Do you think it's okay to talk about other acceptances you have received in an update letter? I feel like that has a high chance of seeming sort of stuck up or something...but I dunno.

I have been dealing with the 'mentioning other schools' issue throughout the cycle. Thought I would share my experience with it here if it helps anyone else:

1. I mentioned other interviews in pre-interview LOIs and I was granted interviews shortly thereafter at 3/4 schools I did this for. I was lucky to have a few 'brand name' interviews early on that I thought I could mention.
This was actually a suggestion by my mentor and ex-dean of admissions at a top 20 med school. I thought it was strange at the time.
2. Post-interview, I decided to mention other schools I had been accepted to in the LOI (if I was impressed with the school and decided to submit one). I did this for 2 schools and I was accepted to both (including USC).

My conclusions (take them with a grain of salt):

- I think the outcome is in all in how you work the 'other schools' into your letter.
I also think it would be hard to sound conceited because its natural for an applicant to have a preference for another school over the ones they have been admitted to. If you are mindful of what you are writing I think you'll be fine.

If your other schools are 'higher ranked', then I'd imagine it causes the committee to think -- jeez this guy has some good options and is really interested in us for these very SPECIFIC reasons. If anything, I think it would help keep away from a waiting list (if you are borderline) because it shows that you have taken the time to compare the schools to others and you are serious.
-Med schools are trying to make their numbers workout and if they can feel more confident that you would go there I think it will help both them and you.

-Everything else being said, I do think that this strategy works best for schools that have a hard time retaining admits -- so maybe not the best for top 20s.

Anyone get an interview invitation lately? I'm still hoping to get one. I know they said they send out invites through the end of March, but I'm getting really nervous. USC is at the top of my dream list!

By the way, isn't their office the nicest on the phone? All the other offices I've called have acted like I'm wasting their time. Keck admissions is so accommodating!
