You must select and respond to one question out of each of the three following groups. 250-500 Words

Group I

    1. The Admissions Committee strongly encourages you to share unique, personally important and/or other factors in your background, such as the quality of your early educational environment, socioeconomic status, race, culture, ethnicity or life or work experiences. Please discuss how such factors have influenced your goals and preparation for a career in medicine.
    2. During review of applications the Admissions Committee assesses each applicant as to what they can contribute to their class and also the potential of an applicant to contribute to society. Please describe what you have to offer in this regard.
    3. You have been given the opportunity to share dinner conversation with one person (alive or deceased) who has made a significant contribution to science or medicine. Identify the person you would select and why?
Group II

    • A. Thinking about your development and preparation for a career in medicine, which non-science college course has been most valuable? Why?

    1. Describe the essential qualities that you look for in a physician.
    2. Based upon your preparation for a medical career and your experiences in the health care field, what potential problems do you anticipate you will face as a physician?

Group III
    • A. Write a brief autobiography which provides a picture of yourself, your family, and events you consider important to you. Identify the values that are of the greatest importance to you. If you have completed your undergraduate education, please describe what you have done or have been doing since graduation.

    • B. From among the activities and experiences listed on your AMCAS application, please select one that has most impacted your decision to choose a career in medicine. Describe your role in the activity/experience and how this activity helped you make your decision.

    • C. Each applicant has goals they want to accomplish as a physician. They also have their own dreams with regards to what they hope to accomplish in their lifetime. Describe how you would want to be remembered at the end of your life.
Group IV (Only reapplicants must answer this question.)

    1. What is your understanding of why you have not been accepted to medical school thus far? What have you done to increase the likelihood that you will be accepted this year

Wow, they definitely upped the ante on the secondary this season..... and I had trouble writing those last year!

Yes..poor me!!!
I got both of those today, so many questions, so little time!

The question should be:
How do you balance life and secondaries??

Answer: I get very little sleep and eating is just out of the question...

Just to confirm, this secondary is NOT online, correct?

We have to just snail-mail it in?

Bw RFU, Wayne state, and LLU I have like 15 essays to complete!!! HOLY ****!

That's right. It has to be printed out and mailed in with the payment and a 2x2 photo.

Essays are not too bad imo. You get choices, and they are actually pretty writeable compared to some of the others I've come across.. I was able to adapt a couple essays to the ones asked by Wayne as well.

Ignore this bump. I'm working on some administrative things involving linking threads to other threads.

this secondary suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks

I haven't received this one yet...getting a little worried.

with ya man, this one was a PAINNNN...definitely worst sec i've done so far, to me even worse than rfu

got my confirmation email. And now we play the waiting game....

Man, i was going off the MSAR from two years ago where they had more OOS acceptance than last year. i just looked at last year's OOS admission stats.... cut in half.

Is it worth applying to this one this cycle? Anyone know if they're more open to oos ?

I've heard from all my MD schools except this one...I have been complete for a fairly long while too. Is there an email for their admissions office? I would like to contact someone at the school in case the secondary request found its way into my spam folder and got deleted.

apparently they pre-screen, but i havent heard of anyone being rejecting pre-secondary.

Just go9t interview invite in the mail. Anyone else?

I emailed WSU's admission office over 24 hours ago and still haven't heard back. 🙄

Just for comparison I had to email Jefferson on something minor and they got back to me within an hour.

We are not amused.

How long is it taking for them to receive your app? I mailed in on 8/6 and still no word...

I go to UCI and took them 1.5 weeks to respond to my email 24 hours would be a spectacular turnaround time.

I called them this morning, and they answered after 2 rings. Might be a better option if you really need an answer right away.

i really didnt want to start another thread: i was wondering what some of you BELIEVE are competitive gpas/mcats for an instate at wayne..? and perhaps how they view SMP/postbaccs

Just got the email from WSU admissions...

Thank you for your interest in Wayne State University School of Medicine. We have received your verified AMCAS application. We prescreen applications before determining if a secondary application will be requested. Your application is under review at this time.

My AMCAS has been complete since ... idk early-mid June. I have a feeling this is going to turn into a rejection 🙄

No they are probably just backlogged/got to your app later. It doesnt mean anything yet.

FWIW i know about 10 people who get rejected pre-sec from wayne last year and 8 of those people were wayne undergrads...they tended to have above avg MCAT scores 😕. Not sure about GPA.

This was honestly one of the most fun secondaries I've had to do. After writing close to 20 pages about myself it's gets a little tiring (Please note the extreme sarcasm stemming from an attitude of "understatement of the year").
With this one, I felt I could be a little more creative and approach things in an interesting manner. I wish other secondaries could be more like this one! (Well except maybe without having THREE essays. 🙂)

Congrats to anybody who has an interview invite from this or any other school so far!

Remember to post them on the interview invite threads 🙂 It's helpful for other SDN members, not only this year but also in the future!

Thanks!

does anyone know what wayne state's strengths are (programs, research, specialties, etc.0? and what's the best part of this school?

Do we need to a letter of confirmation to confirm the date WSU assigns to you? Or do we just show up on that date?

Didn't your invite come through the mail? You can call if you want to confirm.

My file has been marked as "complete" since 7/25 and still no word regarding my application status...

Approx. how long did it take for everyone to receive interview invites/rejections after "complete" status?

Should I call the office (since they snail-mail their stuff) to check on the status of my app, or would that be too troublesome on them?

How did you check the status of your application? I called them at one point to "check status" and they told me I was complete and I got the invite in the mail 6 days later.

Just called today and like almost every other school I've applied to, been put on "hold" after review 🙁

Good luck at your interview!!

Has anyone tried rescheduling the interview? Or is that a bad idea?

Not much activity here. Has anyone else here already interviewed at Wayne? Perhaps there are some notes that can be compared in terms of what the school has to offer. I had to go out and find some information myself, as Wayne doesn't really go out and try to sell the school to you during interview day.

As a side note, tour is completely optional. You really don't have to show up.

Ohh, you just got back from an interview there? How was it? What kind of stuff did you like/dislike about the campus. You're right that they don't really try to seem to sell it, but did the students seem happy there? Any information you could share with us will be much appreciated!

It went as well as I expected it to, particularly due to the interview feedback database that's on SDN. I already posted a brief feedback profile, dated 9/3/08, if you want to take a look. Basically, it was a quick and smooth affair - show up a half hour early, walk around the building a bit, go into the admissions office and talk to the staff briefly, find out where the interviewer's office is (and who it is), go there and have the interview... then come back for the tour at noon if you want to. Quick and easy, especially considering that my parents live in the suburbs and all I had to do was drive down that morning.

As far as the school goes, I have a couple friends from high school and college who go there now. Its an odd feel, almost like high school with that fairly large class and "cliques" that I'm told are present somewhat (as expected at a large state school). One interesting thing I found out about from a MS2 is that they have the cocurricular program which pretty much lets you explore stuff such as volunteering, medical outreaches, seminars, etc. and it will count towards a month of MS4 elective credit.
