First off, congratulations!!
I'll be applying in the next application cycle. Would you mind sharing your stats? I'm currently debating whether I want to apply EDP or regular (IU is really my number one choice since I'm in-state).
Thanks, DoctorDude. I was a regular applicant, IS, interviewed on 9/16/2009. MCAT 30S, 8VS 10PS 12BS; cumGPA 3.90, sciGPA 3.85. Very unique EC's including lots of shadowing and volunteering.
EDP gives you a competitive edge over the other applicants, but being a regular applicant doesn't hurt your chances....none beyond what a rolling admissions process entails, anyway. Also, people who go through the EDP route are ABSOLUTELY positive they want to go to IU, so make sure it is your top choice. If it's your number one choice, going EDP makes sense 😉.

thanks =) everyone gets two interviewers. mine was a closed file interview, but i know many who have had open file interviews. It all depends on who you get and what the interviewers' preference is....
if you really want better information on this, i suggest going to the interview feedback section on SDN. Not to do a shameless plug 😛, but it was actually a great resource to gauge potential questions for your interviews.

What was on this postcard? My roomate told me I got something last week, but he couldn't find it to give it to me. I think it was this postcard. What did it say?
it just said your application for admission to the university is now eligible for review. but i interviewed on september 16 and am from california,
Yeah, I just got the postcard too, and it was postmarked Oct. 16th for me, so I must have just missed it. For some reason it went to my home address rather than my school address. At least I know where to check for THE letter when it comes. Well, only about 4 weeks to go!

Since the postcard was postmarked Oct. 16th and they make decisions on the 15th of each month, I figured that I must have just missed the October round of decisions or they waited until then to send out postcards. I was already expecting to have to wait until November before hearing back from them, so it's not a big deal.
Ya those postcards are about worthless eh? I didn't need a postcard to tell me that my file was eligible for review, for goodness sake I had my interview two weeks before I got it! Lets see... I've had my interview, you have my LOR's, transcripts, application, secondary (fees and forms) why WOULDN'T my file be eligible for review?

2. Did you get an e-mail saying that background check is being done?

Three weeks seems like a rather short time. Do people accept and then backout if they get a better offer, I wonder?
4. If someone takes a year off to beef up their credentials and reapply, do medical schools expect them to be spending that year doing other things besides say preparing for MCAT?

I received a postcard before getting my letter, BUT getting a postcard does not mean that you have been accepted or rejected. The postcard simply means that your application is complete and ready for review by the committee (e.g. you have interviewed, your transcripts are in, all your forms are in etc....and now they will start reviewing your file.)

1. all forms, both my postcard and my final decision, were mailed to the same address to which the supplementary materials were mailed to. If you are concerned about which mailing address the forms are being sent to, call the admissions office and clarify your preferred address.
2. I have not received any email or notice saying that a background check has been conducted....not even prior to receiving my letter. I assume, however, that one had to have been conducted in order for me to be of good standing for admission.
3. All the time. In fact, people can designate multiple acceptances if they are unsure as to which medical school they want to go to. However, a person needs to make a final decision by May 15th, choose the medical school of their choice, and notify AMCAS and other schools that have accepted the decision. It gets more complicated with waitlists and stuff, but I'll leave those threads for later in the year.
4. I can't say anything with full confidence, but I imagine that schools would like to see you do something medically related.
In response to #2 above
I posted this in another thread direct from AMCAS website. I take this to mean that regular applicants accepted before January 1st do not get a background check until january 1st. If you search this thread for the end of september you will see that EDP applicants had their background checks started before we received our letters of acceptance.I applied Early Decision to my school. Not only did I get my background check email the morning of Sept 30, and got my letter of acceptance later that day (my mail is realllly slow) but others even got theirs 3-4 days before their letters. That said, direct from AMCAS website, all other applicants get their background checks "at the point of acceptance after January 1st" 😕. For what its worth...

An e-mail will be sent to applicants by Certiphi Screening Inc., at the preferred e-mail address entered in the AMCAS application by the applicant.

I'm oos, but I do have some ties to the state, as in I graduated from high school in Bloomington Indiana (lived there 3 years), and my dad got his Ph. D. at IU... I wasn't sure about my chances, but I guess I feel very fortunate to get this invite. My first after submitting my applications late (AMCAS verified in Sep)
My stats are GPA 3.5 (undergrad, Georgia Tech) and 3.63 (grad, Duke) + 36Q and 34R on the MCATs I took. I suppose my GPA is low, but hopefully I'll be able to get in...

does anyone know how the the indiana primary care scholarship works?
Is it a yearly scholarship that's administered to students? or is like a pay during med school, reimbursement during residency kind of scholarship? Sorry for the ambiguity....but I wanted to know a student gets reimbursed upon receiving the award...any info would help!

From what I understand, the program pays the tuition upfront each year as long as you continue to fulfill your commitments. If you change your mind or decide not to complete medical school, you will have to pay the program back with interest.
By the way, I visited the West Lafayette branch of the IUSM on Purdue's campus and I was impressed. While the facilities are not great (I believe they are getting new facilities by 2012), the professors are wonderful and the students really seem to value the small class sizes. Just seemed like a great environment to learn medicine, especially with such a tightly knit group of peers.
When did you interview? They usually only send out decisions on the 15th of each month. Did you at least get the postcard that says your application is complete and eligible for review?

i meant no acceptances for a while. i got the postcard the week before the 15th. interviewed 9/16.
Your specific itinerary should have been included in your invite e-mail. My day started at 12:15 and ended at approximately 4:30. The day runs on schedule. The only variable would be your interview. Mine was at 3:45 and lasted for about 45 minutes.

anyone here receive the supplemental packet sometime in september or october? If so I am wondering how long it was from receiving the packet and actual interview. I got my packet at the end of october and it said 4-6 weeks you'll be notified from receipt of this packet. does that mean it will be in 4 to 6 weeks or i won't find out about it until then? thanks
I received my supplemental package about 2 weeks after my MCAT scores were released, so that would have been in early October. I'm OOS, but in school in Indiana. When I called they said my tentative interview date is in January but I still have not received an email with the date. I was told that you should get an email a month before your interview and since they interview nearly 1,000 applicants it takes a while to schedule them.
I'm surprised though because I know one IS student who got the application packet the same day I did and has an interview next week, and mine isn't until January... I hope I still have a chance 😀

It should be at least two months between the time you got your packet and your actual interview. I got an interview invite 1 month after the packet was sent, and then i did my actual interview 1 month later....so sit tight for awhile...but who knows, maybe it might be sooner?

I have an interview coming up for IUSM, and I was wondering if I could get some advice from people that have already interviewed and/or been accepted. What kind of questions did they ask during the interview?--Did they ask about Obama's health reform, etc.? I know that some schools do, but not all, and I was wondering where IU stood on this. Have you checked out the interview feedback page yet? I think you might find some helpful information in there.
It really depends on your interviewer(s). I was asked no such questions; however, one of my friends was asked questions related to reform. My interview questions simply addressed my application and extracurricular activities.

one question everyone encounters relates to the school's competencies, so make sure you are familiar with them. You probably should also know something about health care reform considering the political environment. Don't say you support a certain viewpoint just because IU supports it or whatever. Give reasonable answers to your beliefs on health care and you should be fine.
otherwise, get familiar with some other traditional interview questions! Again, the interview feedback section on SDN is a good resource.
I just interviewed here, and my interview experience was really good. I was only asked about my background, High School activities, college extracurriculars, and my plans for the future. I actually brought up the competencies, so I don't know if my interviewer would have asked me about them. What really surprised me was that I didn't get any of the typical hard interview questions that I'd prepped for, like "what would you do if you saw a classmate cheating" or "what do you think of the healthcare reform", etc. I got the typical, "why Indiana" and "why Medicine", but you get those at every interview. Good luck to everybody on this crazy adventure!
I was not impressed by the Interview. While the med campus is decent looking and newly renovated, the surrounding city is pretty run-down and not very attractive.
As far as my interviwer, he answered a phone call from his daughter or something in the middle of my interview and they had a jolly 3 or 4 minute conversation of his day (no mention of me though).
Also, Indiana is reeeal expensive. The financial aid session was kind of depressing. Even though the guy was honest and seemed nice, he made no attempt to "sell" his school.
I'm not sure what the interviewer thought of me, but if it was me interviewing the school, I would give it a waitlist at best 👎. Just my opinion.

I interviewed at IU yesterday morning. I must say it was a very stress-free interview for me. I did get the "Define professionalism" and "What would you do if you caught some cheating" questions...
I am unsure of how I did, I felt like the interview went really fast, literally 30-40 minutes... two on one. It's hard for me to get a read on the interviewers with so little time... Did anyone else feel this way?? It was fun talking to everyone and I hope to see yall get accepted somewhere!!

1. How long did it take before IU scheduled your interview after sending in the supplementary packet (Dean's form, legal release & app. fee)? I have sent in mine about two weeks ago, but haven't heard anything about yet.
2. What are the odds once you make it to the interview stage? That is, how many people does IU interview, and accept?
3. How important is state ties? I went to HS in Bloomington, my dad got his Ph. D. at IU-Bloomington, and couple of my cousins also went there. I'm not an Indiana resident, though.
4. I guess most important thing is, what did you guys like about IU? Bloomington campus is gorgeous, but I've never been to Indianapolis campus. I realize it's hard to give a comprehensive assessment of the place, but what were your initial impressions? Other than boards scores, were there other things that you particularly liked?

3. I would assume they want to at least be able to entertain the notion that you are going to practice in Indiana. It is the only school in the state that offers any of the medical degrees (DO, MD, DPM, DDS, DMD) so they have a real obligation to produce doctors for Indiana.
4. First of all, its the only place I can get in-state tuition 👍. Secondly, it has a great campus, with one of the most respected childrens hospitals around (riley) right next to the med school building. IU hospital is also attached. Honestly, I don't really know much about IU hospital. There is talk of building a new hospital to replace Wishard, which may or may not be ready to do rotations in by the time I am an MS3 (probably not, but I can dream right?) Methodist hospital/Clarian Health is probably the most respected medical institution in the state. There are alot of great hospitals in Indy. They have advanced programs in town such as transplant programs, which not every med school can say. The people mover, a new transport system between city hospitals/the med school will be pretty neat!
All that said, I think it is safe to say that most people go here because it is the only school in Indiana.
