Yeah, I just always assume that it all needs to be in by the deadline unless otherwise specified. It also helped that I made sure all of my letters were done by June because I told my letter writers that they were due on June 2nd 🙂.

I'm happy to know I am not the only one who sort of lied to my letter writers. I really wanted to avoid getting stuck waiting for letters. I just told them I was going to submit my application June 2nd, so I needed my letter by then. I was lucky that I didn't have to wait for any of them. I am paranoid of something stupid delaying my application, and all of my hard work the past few years getting screwed up because I am late applying.

ditto. I didn't necessarily lie. I just told them, "to be honest, they could come later, but I'm asking you to have them done by this date as a favor to me. I'm aware you have a lot of things going on so I wanted to make sure you had ample time [4-6 weeks prior]." Then I just sent reminders at the "2 weeks left" mark and it just worked out, lol

Yeah, I gave all of my letter writers A LOT of time. The earliest was literally two years early I told her I would like a letter. She obviously didn't write it then, but she knew to expect it (She was my boss as a TA). I have been told from multiple professors that they hate being asked at the end of the semester right before applications go out in June. Students don't realized that just because the semester is over for them, doesn't mean your professors have nothing to do.

Just call ucsd and talk to them. Find out exactly what they want and tell them about your situation. They set that deadline as a means to encourage applicants to submit as quickly as possible, not to screw people who submit their primary early and have slow letter writers.

Ya one of my profs have deadlines on grants and obviously my letter was put on the back burner

That sucks that you are stuck waiting. I hope it isn't holding up your application.

Just want to let you know that I got the "not selected" email. I expected it because of my low MCAT verbal score, but at least I gave it a shot. If you haven't received it, then you should be in good shape. Good luck.

I just got rejected too. Sucks.

also was rejected, not sure why as gpa >3.9 and mcat>38

Also rejected, 3.9 and 38 MCAT with decent EC's, you can check out my mdapps page if you'd like. I'm not taking it personally, Mayo is ridiculously hard to get into. It was my furthest reach, I'd say moreso even than WashU, Northwestern, UChicago, simply because they admit so few from so many solid applicants.

Good luck to those who are still in the running! :luck:

Sorry guys. Best of luck to you in the process at all the other places you applied. Thanks for letting us know, though.

Yeah, it's kind of disappointing that I didn't even get a LOR request, I had one ready to go from my Mayo PI that I worked with last summer. I think it's pretty good, I'm listed second author on the lab's upcoming pub.

Just curious, what schools require you to finish the secondary within a 1 month time frame? I would also be out of the running for many of those because I have a LOR writer who's taking his sweet time.

I just want an acceptance. 🙁

UCLA and Davis want them back in ~6 weeks, and I know Northwestern wants it back in 2 weeks.

Uconn also want it within 4 weeks of getting the secondary. And great, looks like I shoulding be expecting the rejection soon.

4 weeks seems like way more than enough time to complete any secondary, unless you are waiting on LORs or something else out of your control. If you are actually interested in a school, you should be able to make time to get it done in those four weeks (obviously extenuating circumstances negate this). I wish all schools would just follow Mayo and not bother with secondaries. I would be willing to pay $100 per school to not have to go back and re-enter all my prereq classes into their system or rewrite my experience section from AMCAS.

I could not agree with you more

Hey guys i had a quick question. So i was verified on 6/3...and have heard nothing from mayo until today. I figured i was just auto rejected (my mcat isnt great so i was expecting it) then today i get some email

Dear Mayo Medical School applicant,

Mayo Medical School has recently received your application from American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). The $100 Mayo Medical School application fee has been waived. Please note, Mayo Medical School does not have a secondary application. If letters of recommendation are needed for your file, you will be notified via email.

If you have indicated you are taking a future MCAT, your application will be considered upon receipt of the scores. When additional information is required for your file, you will be notified via email.

Thank you for your interest in Mayo Medical School.

So that means im at the stage of waiting for lors basically? and passed the initial screening? did my fee waiver verification sorta hold me up maybe? Im just confused as it seems a lot of youheard from them very quickly who were verified early like me.

Yes you have passed the initial screening...welcome to the LOR request waiting club! aka me and a couple other guys lol

Based on the email, it seems like they won't continue processing your application until your new MCAT score comes in. That most likely means they won't ask for your LORs until your new MCAT score is in. That's how I read it.

has anyone received a LOR request lately?

4000 apply
800 get LOR requests
250-300 get interviews
~72 are offered acceptances (including from alternate list)

personal statement is not read until after LORs are received.

42 MD-only spots available.

so even after LOR there's a very slim chance of actually getting in! :scared: SCARED... it's been like a week since they request LOR but still no news..

YAY MY LETTERS CAME IN. I guess it's pretty early in the cycle so AMCAS was able to process my dumb snail-mail LORs so quickly.

Darn, that means I need to get working on the secondaries I neglected...

Sorry for bringing UCSD into this but:

"1. The UCSD School of Medicine's Admissions Committee has reviewed your AMCAS application and now requests submission of secondary application materials. The Committee will resume the evaluation of your application after all of the requested materials have been received.

You are strongly urged to expedite the submission of required materials in order to avoid delays which may adversely affect your candidacy. If supplemental forms are not received within 1 month of our email invitation your application will be withdrawn from consideration."

Do these "supplementary forms" or "all of the requested materials" mean rec letters then? It implies that it does....I think UCLA and UC Davis have similar requirements.

Sorry for the hijack!

actually it doesn't include LORs. WUSTL told me that when they set their 4 week deadline, they meant all supplemental materials besides LORs. I'm assuming this applies to other schools with such deadlines. It makes sense because a lot of undergrad institutions don't send out committee letters until august, so all those students would be screwed otherwise.

Always good information to have. How did you find out they don't read the PS until after the LORs are received? That doesn't surprise me too much, but I am glad I made it that far even without my PS. I think my PS will provide me a pretty good boost.

After LORs there is about a 9% rate of acceptance, but a 31.5-37.5% chance of getting an interview. It isn't that bad. Keep in mind that initially there is about a 1-2% chance of acceptance.

I 😍 mayo.

👍

Oh no 🙁 I was hoping my PS would help me get a LOR request. Now I'm going to worry even more........Yikes.

I didnt retake the mcat though😕😕confused.

Wellll for Davis specifically, the email says:
"The following materials for secondary application are due in 45 calendar days:

* 3-6 Letters of Recommendation"

But either way, I personally don't have to worry about this anymore, but I'm sure others will be. :\

Again, sorry for the hijack

Dang, so there's like a 1% chance of me getting into Mayo. I wish AMCAS would hurry up and verify my primary. Only 800/4000 get a LOR request! Wow. I hope they like my ECs since they aren't going to read my PS until after LOR request.

I think I misread the email you posted. I somehow missed the "if" portion. I think you are all set to wait for an LOR request now. Sorry for adding to the confusion.
its fine🙂, the longer this process goes on i think the more paranoid and panicky i get lol. its sad 🙁

No worries guys... waiting is more than half of this game. I am also waiting on the LOR request or rejection email so I am in that club as well. 🙂

Oh no 🙁 I was hoping my PS would help me get a LOR request. Now I'm going to worry even more........Yikes.

Don't be too worried, hopefully your ECs will carry you to a LOR request. Assuming your PS covers some of the same/similar topics as your ECs, you should be fine. I was kind of happy to see that the LOR request I received was without the help of my PS. Just stay positive, and know that if/when you get the LOR request your PS will be there to add even more strength to your app.

1-2% chance of getting an acceptance, but that increases pretty quick if you can get to the LOR request stage. Then it is about a 9% chance. Heck, if you get an interview it goes as high as about 29% chance of going to Mayo! Then there is also the waitlist too.

See I just went all the way to maximal paranoia, so as the process goes on I don't get any crazier. It works for me.

NVM if you did then you would not be on here haha

Quitting SDN at this point in the process would probably be harder than quitting smoking (not that I have ever been a smoker, but I hear it is hard to do). The best way to quit is to never start, but it is too late for us...

OK, I'm feeling really stupid for asking this, but how did you guys link your MDApps to your profile?

You have to do it in your account settings. Look for the link that says "my account" and you should be able to do it in there.

I love how this thread is 9 pages long about a month and a half after primaries can be submitted...

I think you guys are beating the Mayo 2009 thread...

The weird thing is that I was just thinking about that last night. We have a very active group of applicants so far. I think it helps that they are moving at a very fast pace this year though. We have already had a lot to talk about already.

I decided to look, and this time last year the thread was only at about 100 posts. It looks like it really started to pick up as soon as rejections started to go out, which also happened this year. Maybe it is because the rejections make us all nervous, so we start checking SDN non-stop.

actually, I always figured that the schools with the larger number of applicants would have the more active threads, only because those schools would have more SDN applicants as well. Therefore, the fact that mayo has started the LOR requests and has pretty much narrowed down its pool of applicants to <1000, and it STILL has the largest thread, is just wow haha

I guess that is a very valid point. Mayo must just have some of the most passionate applicants...or most paranoid, I'm not sure which.

I thought George Washington's secondary had more posts than Mayo. If so, we need to change that, and quick.

Unless people are just now getting the AMCAS verified. They are trickling into this thread as they get secondary emails around now.

It seems like passionate for sure, because most of my other threads aren't nearly as many ppl saying how much they love the school

I agree. My passion for Mayo is what brings me to this thread. My paranoia is what keeps me hitting the refresh button on my email every 60 seconds from about 2:30-3:15 a.m. EST (11:30-12:15 in AZ though).

True story! They should admit the active participants on this thread because of the evidence that we are an overachieving, passionate group that has the potential to be close-knit and awesome in medical school :highfive: WOO!

aaaaaaaaaahh just got my first mayo email! i get to pay them money and send them LORs? But it's the MSTP program, so i guess it's different with them.

i'm still breathing fast. 🙂

get gmail...there's no need to refresh! but then that might take out the excitement of anticipation

Mayo could accept all the regular posters on this thread and still have some room for other people. I think they should do it. Screw AMCAS, the new application service should be SDN.
