hey guys,

can anyone enlighten me on both the Grand Rapids and East Lansing preclinical campuses and make some sort of comparison? Maybe positives and negatives for both locations. Thanks!!

Gave up my seat at CHM for COM. Good luck to those on the waiting list!!!!

Interesting? I'd be curious to know why you made that decision.

1st year the curriculum is almost identical with the exception that COM has lower standards for passing courses.

2nd year you get PBL at CHM, but continued lecture at COM. You don't really get much of a summer either with COM. Trust me you will be pretty sick of lecture by the time 2nd year comes around. You'll be working hard while all the MD kids are enjoying their summer break.

Not sure how the clinical years are different with the two campuses, but I do know that COM has a lower cut off for passing shelf exams.

This and some OMM classes in my opinion are the only real big differences.

Just giving you a bit of a heads up!

In my completely unbiased opinion, Grand Rapids is the only way to go.

The only down side is going to be parking. You may have to plan on just living close and walking or biking in every day. It will be worth it for that new building though!

Actually PBL scares the crap out of me. I am totally a lecture person. I could probably adapt, but freak out/stress out at first. I did a PBL practice session early this fall at an interview for a different program and I was not a fan at all. I had my heart set on the DO program at MSU for several years now, but still applied broadly because there are no guarantees.

Summer break is not a deciding factor for me anyway. Also, for the shelf exams I hope to do really well (fingers crossed) and not just *pass* them. Overall it was my personal choice for where I would have the best fit.

Thanks for the "heads up", but I think I researched both programs heavily before making a decision.

That was a good response "wishingtobeadoc." I interviewed a few weeks back with CHM and am very eager to hear!!! Keeping my fingers cost.

My one concern is the cost. 230,000 was the average indebtedness for OOS last year. I am very dedicated to primary care and have talked with a few docs. We all agree that tuition is a 'bit much. We'll see though. I'm hoping for some awesome financial aid!

Thanks and good luck. I hope you get in!!!! After the first year is there anyway to become a resident of MI? I have no idea about the process.

I heard "no," unless you marry a resident. Anyone want to get married? Wait that's probably fraud.

It is tough to be OOS at MSU. I know that many OOSers seriously consider programs like the military scholarship program. Just so everyone is clear, OOSers cannot get in-state tuition after their first year. Or second. Or third. UNLESS you marry a Michigander.

Also, sadly, MSU is not a good school as far as scholarships go. Do not expect scholarships to make a big dent in your cost of attendence. If you're gonna live off loans with OOS tuition, you have to figure you'll be taking out around 80,000 dollars per year. Total: 320,000 dollars over four years. Remember that averages often include folks who are on military scholarships after the first year, and those who are being helped out a lot by parents, or those with a spouse paying living expenses. If you know you'll be taking it all out in loans, you WILL be 300,000 in debt to go to MSU.

Marrying someone will not get you instate tuition unless you marry the person before you matriculate.

MSU defines instate and out of state based on your intentions for enrolling. To get in state tuition you have to prove that you chose to move to Michigan for a primary reason other than attending medical school.

If your out of state you will stay out of state. Period

Yes its ridiculously expensive if your out of state.

Has anyone interviewed a long time ago (ex. early Nov) and not heard anything at all? I'm starting to wonder

So who else is joining me in Grand Rapids next year? Did anyone else get their pre-clinical campus assignments today???

I got Grand Rapids, my preferred. It's nice they gave us our assignments before May 15th. I will likely withdraw through and I'm sure many others will too, so it will be interesting to see how they handle assignments once the wait list starts to move. If you can't get your preferred campus, will they let accepted students go on a "wait list" for their preferred campus in case a spot opens up upon another students withdrawal?

I think they may just wait until May 15th before assigning campuses to the next batch. That way, they'll know how many spots they actually have.

hey everyone! how long after your status page changed to official acceptance did you out of state people wait before receiving your official packet in the mail?

There are a very limited number of exceptions for becoming in-state and they probably won't apply to many people. They are listed here. But, it's not like other schools that will consider you in-state after one year if you change your license, voter's registration, etc. over. Likely, if you are OOS when you apply, you will be paying OOS tuition all four years. Though a phone call to the registrar's office to discuss options may potentially be a good use of time.

That being said, I have heard of a few people deferring to establish in-state status, so I think that is a possibility, though I'm not familiar with any specifics. Also, as I think someone else mentioned if you end up matching into a residency in Michigan and meeting some other criteria, you can be eligible for a refund of the difference between IS and OOS tuition for the 4th year (that's what I was told, anyway).

so potential phone calls tonight right? What time do they usually start to call people?

The "Refund" Is 30K which isn't even the difference between instate/OOS, tuition for 1 year.

Taking a year off is a valid option. I know a few students who did this. You have to balance your anticipated yearly salary as an attending, with the difference in cost. Interest complicates this further. For me I just wanted to get started, and was too impatient to wait. There are plenty of loan repayment plans, and more in the works. Having debt will be inconvenient, but its not a deal breaker.

If anyone in GR is looking for a 1 bedroom apartment 5min walk away from the downtown campus. Let me know... Parking is a big issue around here, and its nice to wake up just 10 min before class and drag yourself in.

Got the call!!!!!!! 99.99999999999% certain that I will be going to MSU!

davesalle and 6760french, congratulations guys! When did you guys interview?

davesalle and french, sorry for all the questions but are you guys in state or out of state?

To anyone still waiting, you might get a call soon: I just withdrew my acceptance today after receiving my lack of financial package: all loans. I got a much better fin-aid offer elsewhere. So, congrats to whoever gets my spot at MSU.

Any phone calls today?...I doubt any new people interviewed since the last acceptance day so they might just be waiting for may 15 to tell anyone

Anyone here who was waitlisted at CHM last year (or the previously few years) and didn't get in? I'm OOS and have been on the alternate list since late last year. I'm hoping to gauge my chance now that the interviews are over.

I wasn't in the alternate list last year but I am a re-applicant. I am also in the alternate list so... still waiting... good luck!!!!
:xf::luck:

Does anyone have any idea of how many people are on the alternate list, and what conditions people are admitted under (i.e., is the alternate list somehow ranked?)?

I was wondering that too (about how many people in the waiting list)... From what I understand, once the number of accepted students fall below a certain number they turn to the alternate list. Again, from what I know, the list is unranked. They take a look at everyone again... correct if I am wrong...

So I just wanted to make sure before I withdrew... there's no chance of getting a merit scholarship if you haven't received one yet? Fin aid package here was kinda weird, 8500 sub 32000 unsub and 3519 in grad plus. I thought the limit was over 32k unsub so why am I being stuck with higher interest grad plus loans?

I am OOS and will be going to MSU! I am hoping to get my preclinical campus assignment soon!

I am concerned about the tuition, but I think it will be worth it!

If there are any other future M1s out there join us on Facebook (MSU CHM c/o 2014)!

withdrawing my spot from here..... good luck to those waiting!

Sadly, MSU has very, very few merit scholarships, and they don't tend to be very large. If you haven't gotten one by now, you're not going to.

Anyone has any "insider" information on when the alternate list will start to move? I interviewed late last year and this wait has been driving me crazy.
Really hoping to hear from MSU soon.

I just withdrew my acceptance yesterday. Good luck to those of you waiting! :luck:

May 15 is finally behind us, please post if you are accepted off the alternate list this week!

Conditionally Accepted this morning off of the waitlist (via Email). 🙂
Good luck to everyone else still waiting.
