I am wondering if I want to send updates whom I should address the letter to... Should it be Dr. Parkas or just the admission office? Thank you.

 i'm intrigued! PM me?

Hmmm, PM me too. I withdrew from Columbia for many reasons, and I'd be interested to hear if other people thought the same things. Also, you got into Stanford right? What's your Sinai vs. Stanford stance?

Thanks premad. You're our god.

Add me to the list of interested parties as well. 🙂

I'm sure I know what premad will say but I'm curious too 🙂

Goddamn, I didn't even apply to Sinai or Columbia but even I am intrigued

Yeah, I'm curious too now... I'm WL at Columbia and thought it would be dream though my personal main concerns are 1) costs an arm and a leg more than sinai and 2) the student body seemed really young... i.e. mostly around 22/23ish w/ a few exceptions.

In other news, the winds are changing so I think I'll also be at Mount Sinai 2nd look and probably be going there unless you all are no fun (kidding!) and then maybe I'll head out west...

I think the Columbia stereotype (for the guys at least) is that they are a bunch of rugby jocks. Seems like rugby is a necessary EC for P&S admission, at least in the eyes of Dr. Frantz.

Definitely not the stereotype I've heard, although that may also be true 🙂

For any current Sinai students:

I was looking at the website for the 2010 incoming class today and I noticed that they recommend we get PC instead of Mac laptops since certain programs won't work on the Mac. What is current student's experience with this? Is there actually software that we NEED, that we can't access on a mac? Or is it just silly stuff like cd-rom versions of anatomy textbooks? Any help is really appreciated.

Where is this on the website? I seriously doubt you'll have a problem. The thing you'll need a computer for the most is Powerpoint presentations. And even then, I think most schools print them out and bind them for you.

Can't you just dual boot if you get a Mac? There's no software I can think of that works on Windows only, so it shouldn't be an issue. Plenty of my classmates owned Macs. They just say get a PC so they don't have to deal with any problems arising from Macs.

Since the intel switch, you can run Windows on Macs. So if you get one, you can just get the software (Parallels, Bootcamp, VMWare, etc.) to run the windows specific apps that Sinai may require.

Oh rad, that actually looks pretty simple, and not too expensive. It looks like Sinai will provide windows at a discounted price too. Thanks for posting the link.

There is literally ONE program that won't run on macs, an optional (but really helpful) review thing for physio, which you'll use for a few hours and can use any computer in the small group rooms or library. the majority of students have macs.

What is the breakdown of PBL v Lecture in the current Sinai curriculum? If any current students or applicant in-the-know could answer it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Conrad

The small group sessions are not really PBL. You're generally given a small problem set beforehand, like a couple of cases with some questions at the end, which are generally not graded or turned in, and you go over these cases with faculty.

Maybe one of the first or second years can post their schedules, but if I remember correctly, you'll have either 0 or 1 (sometimes rarely 2?) small group sessions per day and the rest will be lecture.

I'm a first year at Sinai. Right now, we are having 2 small group discussions a week. After immuno ends in 2 weeks, we'll be down to 1 a week, I believe. I would say throughout the year we averaged 1 SGD a week. You basically review a few relevant patient cases w/ about 10 other students and your preceptor. Now, class is 10AM-3 or 4PM everyday w/ about 2 hours of lecture and 3 hours of lab/clinic work. Hope that helps!

i didn't know lecture went on that late every day. i thought 2 days a week you guys are done by 1?

Sounds tough to get off the list.... Hmmph... Any idea on how to improve the chance?
hey LMS, as someone who got off the wait-list 4 years ago (geez time flies) I would say that the best thing you can do is send letters of interest. I have given this advice to multiple applicants who I am happy to say are now here among our ranks. The letters must be very personal, why is this your top choice, what makes it your best fit, what about will make you (particularly you) a great physician, and what can you (again very personal) contribute to Mt Sinai. Time to get creative, and do some serious investigation through people who are already here, students, residents or attendings that share your interest. I sent one of these (always different) about every 2 weeks. I also attended re-visit (URM). I got off the WL on the first round. Stats weren't as good as many of the people I was waitlisted with, and to top that I am international. Sinai appreciates passion for the school and it's philosophy. Also, there is hope, a large chunk of my class came from the wait-list..

Most weeks it's like that but sometimes lectures spill over to Mon/Fri. No need to go anyway since they're optional.

Does the admissions office at Sinai respond to people who email them with updates or letters of intent?

Hey thanks colombianMD! Great info... I am also international, may one know where you are from and where you are heading now it's been four years for med school?

I've had a rough experience with this. I e-mailed an update letter a few days after my interview, and didn't receive acknowledgment of its receipt until a month later....3 hours after my wait-list e-mail. So I'll never know if my update was included in my file when reviewed post-interview, which is kinda frustrating. I received an acknowledgment for my letter of intent about 2 weeks after I sent it in.

Btw, thanks for that excellent post ColombianMD - very inspiring! 🙂

if they dont respond in 2-3 days i would give them a call and ask about it

Hey, yeah I am originally Colombian 😉 and will hopefully match in one of the surgical sub-specialties next year! wish me luck...

has anyone received info about revisit hosting? or are we just supposed to show up at aron on friday and figure it all out then? i just wasn't sure if i would need to bring any bedding etc...

anyway looking forward to this weekend!

I was wondering the same thing. Did you get a confirmation from them that you can stay at Aron hall or even a response that they got your confirmation? Haven't heard back from them at all regarding revisit...weird.

nope, no response. i guess if all else fails i'll just show up on friday at aron and hope they have a place for me stay. if not, i can crash with friends/family, but i definitely would like to get the aron experience.

Haha, yep me too. Maybe we are gonna get more info thurs or they just have room for everyone who requested it 🙂

Yeah, I figured we'd just show up and see what happens. See y'all Friday. I'm meeting a friend or two on Saturday night as well, so I'll be in NYC all weekend.

worse comes to worst, we can all sleep in my apartment...

except not, because i'm moving on monday and my place is already torn apart

Spoke to soon. Email! At least 60 people attending, probably more if you factor in people who aren't staying with hosts. Still looks pretty good for you, waitlisters.

I finally received my financial aid award letter!! I am very pleased with it.

I want to check out Second Look but I will be out of state at another second look that is the whole weekend. 🙁

yeah i would assume lots of people don't need hosts, myself included. excited!!

LOL. My student host is another student from my small, small liberal arts college that I graduated in the same class as...slash majored with. Mistake? I think not.

Haha seriously or they were reading sdn 🙂

ah..... I just received an acknowledgement from the Admission Office with merely "thank you" in it... Am I dead already?

You mean in response to a letter you sent in? Isn't that a pretty standard response?

Don't worry. Its the same response that I got. I'm pretty sure that its standard.

Do we need to bring a sleeping bag or anything if we're staying with a host?

Just got my financial aid. All loans + Gradplus. I'm confused though. My EFC on my FAFSA was 15,000 it says (student data only). I have no idea how 15,000 could be my EFC based off of my data alone, I have no money.

I included parental information on FAFSA...is that why?

Anyway, this doesn't effect my decision as Sinai is still cheaper than most other schools for me (tuition + living expenses are lower) considering that I got the same package everywhere else.
