I was iffy on OHSU before this, but I seriously am cash strapped after buying some plane tickets for upcoming interviews. I am OOS, and their OOS tuition is outrageous.

Sounds like a neat school, but it is pretty interesting to read the dissatisfaction with it from instaters, and I don't think it is all sour grapes...I think this school has some real problems, and this late secondary may be the tip of the iceberg.

Good luck.

I'm not that familiar with the school's internals. Could you elaborate on the problems the school has (aside from evidently forgetting to put out a secondary lol)?

A current student was saying how they have some severe monetary issues and cant even finish building their facilities or something along those lines...one of the reasons tuition has been hiked...i dont want to give a bunch of mis-information though so hopefuly he/she can come back and shed some more light on the subject. Personally i love ohsu and a late 2ndary doesnt matter to me...im all done with every 2ndary but this anywyas i dont find it a huge deal if i dont do it till sept-oct or whenever they want to release it.

Read through this thread, and last year's thread, for the kind of grumbling from the instate crowd.

On paper, it is a really neat school, and Portland is a really neat town. But finances and high tuition seem to be a growing problem there, and not just for the OOS applicants.

For me, $ matters...if this secondary had come out a month ago, I would have eagerly submitted...but now that I have a few interview invites, and some travel stuff to pay for, I am less inclined to spend any more money on secondaries at this point...

Good luck.

Here's what they have on the website now:

The Office of Admissions is currently in the process of finalizing our new online secondary application and application status page. Secondary applications have not yet been distributed. We project that secondary application invitations will start being emailed to applicants in mid-September.

Being from the area I have seen the OHSU campus expand tremendously in the past few years; but as with everything in the recession I'm sure they are hurting as a result of all those new buildings they have (which includes this weird gondola thing that goes over I-84 as you come into portland).

The state of Oregon has been in fiscal trouble for a long time, and even UW is making huge cutbacks and massive tuition hikes...still, an awesome place to go to school in my opinion.

I have heard that too. 👍

now that I think about that giant gondola thing, how epically decadent of them. Whoever authorized that must have had some sort of gold fever when the real estate boom was going on.

I can just imagine a board room in the sky in Portland filled with people in expensive suits smoking huge cigars while discussing the options of how to cross the freeway to that part of the new campus...probably the most expensive and most hilarious option available.

All they need now is a little snow for a ski run that could go down to the waterfront. Oh, and I guess you would need a ramp to get over I-5.

I don't understand how, with even a half decent IT team, it would take months and months to get an online secondary and status page set up.

perhaps getting to work by gondola is a bit slower than they had hoped?

I think everyone in this forum is a bunch of babies. All I have read is OHSU this and OHSU that. OHSU is one of the finest medical schools in the nation. All of you should be so lucky to get a chance to step foot in one of there classrooms. So what if they are a little late with applications. Most of you probably wont even get an an interview because your not worth it. I think you all need to stop talkin **** and start praying that OHSU even reads your application.

woah there big fella, don't take things so seriously. we're all just shootin' the breeze here. after all, it's not like we have an OHSU secondary to fill out or anything lol

I hope this isn't a current student. What a jerk.

I've go no issue with OHSU being a little late and would absolutely love to go to school here. While I don't see myself "praying OHSU even reads my application", if I did get in I would make it my business to ride the gondola as much as possible.

ditto

I just hope that interviews don't get pushed back to far. I can only fly standby for free until Nov 10, (dad lost job with airline) and seeing as I have 4 interviews lined up prior to that and expecting plenty more, I can't justify buying a plane ticket to interview at this school if the rest of their application process is as slow as the secondary.

Hello everybody! I hope that this cycle finds you well. As a current student, and a former employee, and native-Oregonian I thought I'd answer some questions.

First, the OHSU application cycle is non-rolling, basically if you interview in April or September, it really shouldn't make a difference. Also, historically in the past, they've been only using paper for their secondaries. Apparently they're changing/modernizing to a online application.

Second, they have scaled back their ITG services, a lot of the IT employees were the first to go when they tried to reduce their overhead.

Also, I think that the tuition at OHSU is competitive with many private schools. It is an academic medical center as opposed to a university that has a medical school (i.e. we don't have an OHSU football team or anything like that).

In terms of faculty quality and curriculum, I really think that OHSU is head and shoulders above many of the schools in the country. The faculty is very approachable, and will work very hard to make sure you succeed.

Be patient! There is no rolling deadline, and there are spots open until May 15th. OHSU isn't a perfect school, they tend to be a little unorganized, but it really is a top notch school. Good luck, and feel free to PM with questions! 👍

Edit: The airtram/gondola is very cool! There simply isn't enough space on pill hill to build any new facilities, so I think that was their best solution. The roads around there are just FUBAR (imho). OHSU admissions is very slow, I think they have one of the smaller admissions offices. Again, be patient and good luck!

The roads are in a little disrepair but Terwilliger is fine. As a matter of fact they have been doing some repaving on the southside where it connects to capital highway. But why drive. You can always run or bike to school. The trails are nice and the bike lanes and running path have more than enough room. Plus you get in shape real quick with all the hills. Or you can take the gondola (I think students ride for free).

I'm not sure how reflective the organization/quality/staffing of the adcom is of the overall medical school anyway. It just makes the admissions process that much more annoying/stressful. In the end, I'd rather they skimp on the adcom than other areas... unless that leads to lower quality classmates...

just FYI- if you go around calling the tram "the gondola" you're going to get some weird looks...

 I showed a friend of mine the tram and he kept on calling it a 'gondola.' He did get said weird looks too.

low quality classmates... nice.

low quality classmates... nice.

Well, isn't the purpose of having a good adcom is to admit higher-quality applicants? If you don't fill your class til the last minute many of the applicants will have already chosen another school. Perhaps I should have said "lower" quality, as there are many applicants who don't make it at all who are of sufficient "quality."

just got the secondary, oos.

I got mine yesterday morning. (in-state) I was complete about 2 days after apps opened up. I like the electronic form because you can do some work on it save it then come back to it later. Now lets see how long it takes to get interview invites...

Okay... soo.. can you post the prompts please? 🙄

Does anyone have some sort of contact email for the admissions office? I want to update my transcript with a class that I completed this summer. I called the number and it sent me through a series of messages that left me with an answering machine.

BTW their phone message says they still haven't sent out secondaries.

hmmm... just got the secondary email, but when I log on it says they haven't sent me the email and therefor I can't start the secondary. Very strange

I got the secondary this morning too. Can't check the prompts though, as I'm on my iphone. Hopefully they are the same as last year.

I haven't received the email yet, so for grins, I tried to log on and got this msg:

Preliminary application information received from AMCAS: Yes
Secondary application notice emailed to you: No
The Office of Admissions finalized the new online secondary application and application status page on September 1st, 2009. Due to the high volume of primary applications we have received from AMCAS, it may take 12 or more weeks from the time you submitted your primary application for us to email you with the invitation to complete the secondary application.

I don't like the sound of that 12 weeks one bit...I added OHSU in mid July...I don't think I am going to be filling out any secondaries in mid October...my guess is that they are being very careful not to put too many out there at once so that the system won't crash...

It knew who I was - it posted my name - so I am logged in to their system, just not going to get the secondary for another month...

just got sec. same prompts as last year one on success and other on diversity

This announcement was on their website:

Seriously. I'm not sure how much give-a-damn I have left in me. I mean, I love this school like no other, but finishing this thing is gonna take all of my being...

Got my secondary this morning. Submitted this evening. Interview? Sure hope so...

For those with the secondary, how many activities are you putting down?

I'm still waiting too dangit. I just wanna get this sucker sent in and be done with secondaries...hopefully forever.

For one of my activities, I am going to compile all of my hobbies together. Does anyone think it would be a bad idea to include brewing beer?
