For one of my activities, I am going to compile all of my hobbies together. Does anyone think it would be a bad idea to include brewing beer?

dude, this is the Pacific NW. the ability to brew beer is a mad skill to have here! also, it shows that you have an aptitude for chemistry and that you are putting it to practical use

I agree, but I'm just trying to avoid looking like an alcoholic.

You probably shouldn't. I wouldn't include it if it was my application. Med schools still seem to maintain a very conservative image.

As long as it doesn't violate any laws, e.g. you would have wanted to be 21+ when you started but I don't know if there are any other applicable laws, like taxes if you sold it.

Actually, there are quite a few brew brewers at OHSU. I think even one faculty advisor picked their advisee because they both shared a passion for brewing good beer. This is Oregon... beer everywhere, even medical school! Whatever makes your application stick out from the other 5,000 or so definitely helps. Good luck! OHSU is a great school!

For those with the secondary, how many activities are you putting down?

I have six (employment/volunteering/shadowing) for the requested time period, so I put six. I didn't put any hobbies or anything.

wait, so they actually don't accept LORs from AMCAS? i have no idea what to do at this point then... do i need to get my letter writers to mail them directly to OHSU?

I did Interfolio. Then I had interfolio send them to AMCAS. Now I'll have interfolio send them to OHSU.

Would someone mind posting the timeline for activites? 5 years again?

Thanks to all!

Still waiting on secondary. 🙂

I'm still waiting too. Does everyone get the secondary?

they aren't screening so everyone gets the secondary. They are going by the order they received AMCAS primary applications. I think they said everyone who's application they received by Aug. 15 will receive their secondary by Oct. 9 or something like that and then everyone else by the end of October. I think their website has the message up so you could check there if you want, but that should help give you an idea of when you might expect to receive the secondary.

Yeah I'm 25, I don't sell the beer, and I'm limited to making no more than 200 gallons per year- I don't see myself achieving that amount anytime soon.

😱

Well I guess more waiting for me. At least we do not have to mail them in...

How many of you are defaulting to the "life/work experiences" for the diversity essay?

can someone plz post the character limit for these essays? thanks =)

ok holy crap is it just me or is 4000 characters ALOT of space for these essays? thats like almost twice the length of the personal statement! how do i write that much for "how i am going to evaluate my success as a medical student?" anyone else having problems?

I guess you should think about what you feel will satisfy you as a future physician. Best of luck.

lol, UCSD wanted a 7500 character autobiographical sketch. Hopefully I can rehash that monster essay to fit the constraints of this one.

yeah UCSD's was the worst...it intimidated me for a good week or so before I mustered up the courage to start it.

I thought it was a limit. I don't think you need to use the whole space. With all the essays they have to read, I would imagine they would appreciate quality over quantity.

so they dont screen and since they already tell you, it seems that their screening wasn't that strict to begin with =) got this one today, will probably be my last but i dont have enough energy to get to it right away!!

Just got this one today, but I'm almost positive I'm not filling it out. It says I have until Oct 20th, so things could change, but doubtful. They just took too long and things have gotten complicated in the meantime.

Same here.

As I sit here with 6 interview invites in hand, and another half dozen or so in the hopper, I have lost all interest in filling out another secondary, especially one with 2 long essays...

I am sure it is a great school, blah blah blah, but the reality for OOS applicants is that the cost of attendance will be very high - OOS tuition is exorbitant...

Good luck to all.

Well since I'm not as lucky to have several interviews waiting in the wings, I'm still working on this secondary. It's driving me slightly insane. I'm really hoping to get an interview here. Would really suck to be working so hard to communicate my background and point of view in 8000 characters only to get ignored or flat-out rejected. 🙁

How intimidating was the optional "diversity" part? I don't know whether to fill out the survey because it will basically deem me as "not at all diverse" when I actually am. I think this will wrongly and probably significantly hurt my chances. Not happy at all. 🙁

Because they have the survey IN ADDTION to a 4,000 character essay, I have the feeling that they're trying to meet quotas... not cool.

So what do you guys think? Should I fill it out?

I definitely got that feeling too. Especially when they explicitly advise applicants to "consider...race and sexual orientation" in formulating their responses.

Sorta turned me off....

whoaa there is so many "explain" areas in the optional section.. wouldn't we include that in our diversity essay anyways?! i wonder if it would be a bad idea to leave it out even if we did have adversity in our life 😕

I wasn't verified until the end of August, the 27th or so, and I just got the secondary this evening. Although, I'm instate if that makes a difference.

yea, i think i'm throwing in the towel as well guys. have two cali interviews already, hoping for a third, but there is no way my app here would get reviewed in time to make it part of the same west coast trip. dont wanna go out west again for one school. too much $$$. good luck to all.

Are people getting updated that their apps are complete?

im kinda confused for the first essay question.. I thought it was asking to evaluate our success thus far but now it seems its the success we are going to have? i didnt pay attention to the "will".. 😕 any thoughts?!!

I took it as "if you are accepted, as you progress through medical school, how will you know you are having success?"

Finally got this secondary today. Was verified 8/27. I'm OOS.

That's weird. I was verified 7/27 and I haven't gotten this yet...

Hmm.. that is weird. If you scroll to older posts, you'll see someone else who was verified 8/27 also received their secondary already. I don't know. 😕

Yea I think they're asking you to describe how you know you're being a successful student once you're in medical school. I'm assuming this is besides the obvious -- like grades. 😛

I'd check your spam file on your email to make sure your emails aren't redirected. Here is the login page, you can try to see if you can access it. There aren't any special passwords or anything.

I was a little hesitant to do this after the Minnesota fiasco, but what the hell. I tried and it said that they haven't sent me the secondary invitation yet. So I don't know what's going on.

AMCAS submitted/verified mid/late July
Secondary received and submitted today 😀

I don't think there are any quotas they are trying to meet. I'm doing my undergrad in Oregon, and they're always coming to our school and telling us how much they want to give everyone a chance. They said something to the effect of giving special consideration to those who may not have the stats they are looking for, but have had very adverse experiences. So if you do have the stats, I wouldn't worry about it. I think it's just to give them an excuse to look over an application that would have been disregarded otherwise.

White Christian male here--just read OHSU's "diversity" question on the secondary app. I think I suddenly became gay.

I read on here that OHSU is non rolling admissions. Can anyone verify that? I am missing one of their pre-reqs and am not willing to add another semester of college just for that one class especially if I won't know if I got in until april.

I don't think you necessarily have to be gay/a person of color/poor/etc, just talk about having had experience with other groups...that being said, I get what you mean.

The rumor here is that 15% accepted post-interview, 15% rejected post-interview, rest done late in the season.

they are quick to complete you at least! it took me only 1 day after submission to be marked complete. After dealing with penn state this is a nice change lol

does anyone know if OHSU is pass/fail? and if there is PBL? i looked everywhere on the website and couldn't find it...
