Anyone applied to its MD/PhD program? How many have they accepted so far?

I don't know how many MD/PhD applicants have been accepted so far, but my guess would be that it is <2. Unless something has changed in the last few weeks, we're accepting 2 outside applicants this year, and I doubt the school would take the risk of over-accepting.

sorry if this has been answered, but are acceptances emails or phone calls? and and people placed on hold after interview are notifiied how?

acceptances are email.

sorry, not sure what your 2nd question is asking.

If you are placed on hold after your interview, then the notification is not via e-mail; it is via an update on the admission portal.

Is it just me, or have there been very little acceptance offers made lately? (Or are those people just not posting) ??

To any of you who have been accepted to OHSU and are in the process of seeking housing, consider looking at the OHSU co-op. www.ohsucoop.com.

We are a large co-ed house of ~20 students, mostly MD though there are some PA/RN/PhD students here. Our house is literally across the street from OHSU and was originally built as a fraternity back in the 20's. We are very intentional about living in community with one another - respecting each other's space and pitching in to keep things clean/functional/productive for all. We keep our rent cheap by pitching in on chores and maintenance.

We typically accept ~4 incoming MD students each year and will be reviewing applications in the next couple months.

More info at www.ohsucoop.com.

Does anyone know where to find a class schedule for first-year students? I know where to find the curriculum, but I'd like to see the actual times that classes start/end and what days of the week they take place. Thanks.

When I interviewed last week Katy said that classes ran from 8 AM to 12 PM, with lecture being approximately 2 hours and small groups another 2 hours. There is also only one class at a time, so whatever the curriculum says is going on in a particular time period that is the only class.

Anyone here interview on 3/11? Just been lurking around SDN waiting to hear news, and jumping out of my skin whenever I get an email. Any other late interviews get a response yet?

I interviewed recently too. I have two conflicting ideas on when decisions will come out.

Katy gave the impression that since the school can wait until May 15th, a lot of decisions will be made just days before then.

However one of my interviewers asked me what I knew about how the process would unfold. He said that it would be unlikely that they would take that long, and foresaw all of the decisions being made within the next 2, tops 3, weeks. So maybe you'll have a decision soon?

I do know they made it a point to say that email notification will take some time longer than the actual website.

For anyone who has had a decision, what does the status page look like? Does it say your decision under the list of other actions for your application, or is it a link to a separate page that tells you? Just want to be a little prepared for probably the most nerve-wracking internet log on session haha

I'm pretty sure that your specific class schedule for next year hasn't been created yet, so it's not too surprising if you can't find it online...

However, you will start with GIE (gross anatomy, imaging, and embryology) and it will go something like this:

-Lecture from 8-10 daily
-Anatomy lab from 10-12 daily
-Clinical medicine course from 1-5 on Wednesdays
-Preceptorship one afternoon per week (to be assigned later)

It shows up at the end of the list of actions for your application and says something like, "Decision: Accepted, hold, etc." and then there is a line or two of text telling you what to expect next.

I think they pretty much put any and all messages about status on that main page, so you don't have to click through to any other links to get info. Remember to refresh your browser frequently - good luck!

Ahh that's a little disappointing. Definitely more anxiety provoking to do a jumbled search of a screen that you're scrolling than to click a link and have a decision presented to you obviously. Of course the moment is over quickly, but still haha. :xf:

Decision: Accepted, interviewed mid-feb.
Good luck to all those still waiting :luck:

Thanks so much! That helps a lot.

Interviewed 3/09... they told me then that it would take 6-8weeks. I was hoping it would be sooner, but I've given hope on that. Well not quite, what's happened is that I've developed an obsession with checking the admission portal and my mailbox... but still not a thing.

Is it just me or is OHSU giving out more acceptances before May 15th than they have in the past?

As I understand from previous posts they accept ~15% of those interviewed right away. This means around 80ish acceptances before May 15th.

Hmm... I thought it was 15% of the incoming class.

Just giving out my calcuations for us stressed out applicants on hold:

Last year there were 555 interviewed and 218 acceptances given out. Assuming this year is the same and 15% (84 applicants) are initially accepted and 15% are initially rejected, that puts 387 of us on hold. 218-84 is 134 applicants on hold that eventually get accepted (the top 34.6% applicants on hold). One out of three isn't too bad if you ask me.

Correct. OHSU takes alot of people from the hold list. If you get ranked in the top 50, your chances of admission are excellent. There is reason to be hopeful unless you have a really high number on the hold list.

When do we actually find out what number we are on the hold? May 15th?

When I interviewed, Katy said that it depended on the year but about 40-80 get taken off of the hold list.

She wasn't very clear about this though - if you get placed on "hold" does this mean that you might be accepted before you are ranked on a hold list? By this I mean that the hold system would act like a buffer against rolling admissions, but that getting this status doesn't mean you won't get accepted outright before a ranked hold list is generated, so that 15% get outright accepted, some number get placed on hold and then accepted, and then 40-80 get accepted from the ranked hold list?

Usually, it is between May 15 and June 1. OHSU has alot of movement, so if you get a number between 1 and 50, start looking for housing. And if you are in the fifties and sixties, there is good reason to be hopeful.

Yes, I believe that it is possible to get accepted outright from the hold list before the ranked hold list is generated. I started med school in 2007 (accepted to OHSU but attend another school) and, as I recall, in either 2005 or 2006, OHSU accepted folks from the hold list who were ranked in the nineties. I checked briefly last year, and as I recall the number was high forties or low fifties. It varies from year to year.

Most of this hold list speculation is correct. So...

1) Yes, you can be accepted off of the hold list before you ever receive a waitlist ranking.

2) Yes, if you have a low number on the waitlist, your chances of being accepted are pretty good. Just a warning though...for my entering class, this number got into the low 50s, but if my memory serves me correctly, last year's entering class only made it into the 30s. Point: don't count on anything until you have an acceptance to show for it.

3) Waitlist numbers were released around mid-May when I applied.

4) Another point worth making - applicants to the combined programs are NOT told their positions on the waitlist because those numbers can be "misleading". So...if you are an MD/PhD or MD/MPH applicant don't count on knowing your number. If your chances are good, the program director will usually tell you via phone call.

From your experience, do you notice the number being taken off the waitlist as trending down? It seems like 5 years ago it was 90, last year it was 30. Is it random or is there a trend going that movement on OHSU's waitlist is getting much smaller?

Last year was a very low year. I believe they accepted up to number 34. It was sad. But previous years have been between 50 and 90.

Honestly, I haven't been here long enough to know. Last year's number was definitely a low, but that could have been due to a number of things (more applicants, more people wanting to stay in-state, OHSU ranking many people who actually loved OHSU, etc).

One thing I will say is that this year's 1st year class also seems to have more in-state students than has been the case in the past few years. So, my guess is that, like always, IS students are interviewed and offered acceptances more often than OOS students...but for some reason, more of them are accepting and ending up at OHSU. Perhaps they have fewer options or the cost of attendance is rising so much at other schools that OHSU doesn't seem exorbitant by comparison.

I'm just speculating, mind you.

Anyone who interview on or around 3/25 hear anything back yet?

Do they email everyone saying they've received your FAFSA app...before being accepted? It's just the only school that I've gotten this from.

Yes, OHSU starts to do financial aid for all people that interviewed, even prior to acceptance. I think they just like to get the ball rolling on everyone, rather than waiting to start once people are actually accepted.

If you've done your FAFSA and indicated OHSU as a school, you should get confirmation that they've received it and they may send you a request for information and something called an Independent Verification Worksheet to fill out.

The people in the office are really nice as well, if you have specific questions.

I don't know if someone posted this already, but at my interview, they announced that this year's incoming class size would be 123.

all decisions will be made by May 6th. I interviewed mid march and have yet to hear, but maybe next week. Decisions, according to the committee, comes out Tuesday the following week after the committee meets on Thursday. you will get a status change and if accepted with an email as well.

What was the previous class size?

And Nafis, is May 6 for all hold decisions as well? I called today and they told me that we will find out by May 14 since May 15 is a Saturday but they didn't give me any earlier date....

Wow even better! At my interview, they said the incoming class would be 120. I wonder what prompted the expansion?

For class size I have this to offer: Katy said during the orientation in the morning that the class size would be 123. I got the impression that this was decided upon at the beginning of the cycle.

For last year's size, the first year student that was on our tour said his was 120.

What was your source for the May 6th and Tuesday notification? Your interviewer? My interviewer gave me the impression that he was on the committee, and he strongly emphasized that decisions would be made well in advance of May 15th.

On a side note, does anyone else find it humorous that this of all websites has a misspelling in the name of this thread (aka the school's name)?

I interviewed March 17, and my interviewer said I should hear back the end of April...

That hasn't stopped me from checking my status every couple of days since the beginning of April. 😀

All my interviewer said was "we are very, very slow. please be patient."

Knowing that we should hear back by the end of April won't stop me from continuing to check my status regularly either.

To anyone still waiting on financial aid info: I received my packet in the mail on Saturday. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask. I filed my FAFSA right before the priority deadline.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know if there is parking available near the bottom of the tram?
