I think they went home already. I had to call the admissions office and at like 3:00 no one answered. I knew the military got off for pretty much every holiday, but halloween, really?

I have heard a few things from the USUHS SOM admissions office -- calls on the 1st and 15, calls on the 15th and the 30th, and calls whenever they get around to it. I think the lesson is not to have any expectation of a call date. That way you may avoid getting overanxious.
 
I am thinking of applying to USUHS. Is ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) waiverable? It was 5 years ago, only lasted a few months, no treatment needed, and never came back.

Can somebody who already did the physical give a suggestion on whether I should bring it up if I do end up appplying? Or wait for it to come up? I was seen in a MTF as a dependent, don't know if that matters.

Scooter2 don't sweat it, last time people where getting calls on saturday, sunday and I think some people even got calls on Monday and Tuesday. As they say in the military hurry up and wait.😀

On a seperate note, I found another sweet perk of being an officer.😀

Barking Sands Cottages at the Pacific Missile Range Field on the west coast of Kauai, Hawaii😀

Georgeous location, and the accomodations are sweet!😀 Available to anyone on active duty, retired military or their families. For anyone up to 0-5 you can get a deluxe 2 bedroom cottage, cost is $85/night for 01-03, $90 for O6 and up.

For 06 and above you can also get a delux 3 bedroom cottage for $90/night, max stay 2 weeks, unless there is room.

For navy officers you can book 5 months in advance, for every other service 4 months.

If your illness is on record, especially at an MTF, you will want to acknowledge it and seek a waiver if necessary. Waivers usually aren't too difficult to get for transient issues but if you attempt to hide it and it comes out later you will most likely be disqualified. Just remember, the doc at the physical will have no say in the waiver process as he/she just records information. Those decisions are exclusively the jurisdiction of DoDMERBs. Be prepared to produce more information about the event or possibly being required to see a specialist (DoDMERBs pays for such necessities). Good luck.

Quick note, USUHS admissions staff has said that email communications at this point are unlikely. Anyone seeking information from admissions may want to call instead, just make sure it is worthwihle.

Just got the conditional acceptance today! Now as long as the Chargers can pull off a win it'll be the perfect Sunday!

I got the call today too! Army, interviewed 9/17. Now the only question is how to spend the last months of total freedom for basically the rest of my life. any ideas?

hey, does anyone know where I could find a ball-park estimate of how much a physician in the army makes after his residency? maybe for family medicine?

also, I'm looking for a list of where I'd be likely to practice domestically in the Army.

Its really hard to say exactly how much you will be making just because there are so many variables. You can start by just searching for military pay tables in google - you will be an O-3. To this, you have to add BAH/BAS, which is tax free pay for housing and depends on where you live but is usually around 2000-2500 per month unless you live in a real **** hole (which is entirely possible in the Army, not as much in the Navy). There is usually a 3% per year pay raise increase on basic pay, and rates increase for years of service. Plus you get special pay for family med, which is 20 g per year currently, board certification pay, and other special pays - it is impossible to say if these will increase or not in the next few years...

A good estimate would be:
[0-3 over 4 (after residency) - $4,722.90 - taxed
BAH/BAS - estimate $2000 (could be more, could be less)- not taxed
Monthly variable special pay - $416 (taxed)
Board certification pay - $208.33 (taxed)]

X 12

+ Annual incentive pay (Family Med) - $20,000

= 108,166.76

Awesome grotto! thats exactly what I was after. so does specialties that make alot more in the civilian market, like ortho, have a significantly higher incentive pay? do you know this off the top of your head or did you find the info somewhere?

Ahh, there's the rub - not really. The max incentive pay is 36K and minimum is 20K, so ortho, neuro, etc are only making a bit more (after taxes) than primary care.

For primary care, pay is in many ways equal with civilians - your money is your money and there are no draws for health insurance or malpractice. In the end you are coming out somewhat equal, especially as you gain rank. For specialties, you will be earning significantly less than your civilian counterparts at all points except for in med school at USUHS and during residency.

I've already drank the kool aid, so for me it is a wash. With prior service time, I've accrued enough active duty years to make O-4 somewhat quickly after I graduate from USUHS. For people coming right out of college - compensation should be something you think about. I know that none of us are doing this for the money 😉 but when you have a family to think about in a capitalist economy, finances are very important.

The fact is, no matter what happens with special pay or pay raises or whatever - military service will never make you rich. The military will always pay you enough to have a comfortable middle class lifestyle, will provide you and your family with health care and good benefits, and ensure you a secure pension - nothing more, nothing less.

If you don't happen to know the info off the top of your head it can be found at the following website.

Click on the 2009 pay tables to open the document. Page 1 has your base pay numbers. On page 9 is the special pay for medical corps officers. The other pages have various other incentives and special pays that may or may not apply to you.

BAH is not covered in the dfas pay tables. If you want to find your BAH allowance use the following website.

Congrats to all of you who are getting in. Maybe some of you can answer this: I am 'Qualified' by my DODMERB physical but i didn't make hight/weight. I need to go get this measured at an Army recruiter i'm told, but how much are they going to bust my b****? I can get excellent-low on my PFT but i just don't think i can get down to 22% BF(I'm at 24%, been losing weight, and have hit a plateau). Can i get a waver or just do a remedial at officer training?. Any answer to any of the above, or just a comment, poem, or musing would be much appreciated.

You have to get under the weight for them to allow you to matriculate there are no waivers.

That being said usually the recruiters will work with you. Remember thin waist (breath deeply) and wide neck (pretend you are taking a rough s***). Some recruiters are by the book but most are pretty laid back.

Interviewed Sept 23, accepted yesterday morning, Navy all the way. 😀😀😀 I guess I got the call Sunday night, but I missed it because my phone sucks. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back.

Interviewed on 10/02, accepted 10/19. If you look at last years thread there was not much rhyme or reason to when people heard anything. Try not to worry too much. I know easier said than done, particularly from this side of the fence. Good Luck!
 
Wow! Congrats everyone! If you all are a good representation of everyone getting acceptances, Navy's going to fill fast! You all might follow our shoes, and kick AF out of the #1 filled branch 😛

Man - exciting to hear about all these acceptances! Making me nervous/excited. I interviewed 10/22, which seems like forever ago, but really it was like 10 days ago... In any case, if 10/1 interview people heard on 11/1 mostly, then I guess there is a small chance of us 10/22-ers hearing on 11/15, but most likely 12/1. Ugh- I hate waiting 🙂

Depending on how much you're over, it might be easier for you to cut weight MMA style to make your weigh in...getting taped is not really an accurate measurement of BMI, and getting those numbers down might not be so feasible depending on your body type (I deal with this every six months...I do a whole bunch of weightlifting and have a deadlifting butt...according to the Army my BMI is 33%...according to calipers and the fact that you can see my abs by BMI is in the high teens/low twenties...it's easier for me to cut 8-10 lbs of water weight before a weigh in than deal with the taping. PM me if you want the technique I used.

FYI, I believe the recruit body fat standard is 24% for males 17-20 and 26% for males 21-27 according to AR 40-501
 
hey all, I stumbled across this forum and have found it very useful and informative

I interviewed Oct. 1 and just got the good call on Sunday. I forgot to ask what branch i was placed in but my first choice was Navy so I'm hoping I got it.

Also, does anyone know if by returning the acceptance packet it is a commitment to joining the military? or can we withdraw our acceptance later? Only one or two schools I would even consider over USU and I have not heard back from them yet so it might not be an issue anyway

I know for the Navy, the standard is 22% for males (17-39) and 33% for females (17-39) IAW OPNAVINST 6100.1H, the Navy PRT program instruction. BCA limits can be found on page 43. Pages 44-50 describe the procedure for determing BCA. Page 51 has the height/weight tables and 52-64 are the tables used to determine BCA based on neck and waist circumfrence.

Those are the fleet standards. It is possible that USUHS sets a common standard for all their students, but since there are different maximum height/weight charts for each service, my guess is that they each follow their own rules when it comes to BCA. Someone at USUHS will have to confirm/rebut that assumption.

No, it's not committing to the military. Its like any other school, where you have until May 15 to make a decision. After that you'll get your commissioning paperwork in the mail (exactly when you get it depends on the service you got) and it's when you sign that that you're dedicated to the military.
 
Got the call Nov 1, did anyone get the acceptance packet yet? I haven't.
